As we can all remember, the moon in Q appears to have gone under some rather.........drastic changes
SPOILER: Show

However, i recently came across this image from Asuka and Mari's orbit battle
SPOILER: Show
Image

The giant blood stain is there, and yet the red grid and atmosphere are not. It also appears to be stationary while later it's spinning much faster than is physically possible. What do you guys think? did something happen between the opening and Shinji's wake up, or has Anno done goofed?

I believe that second image is from the teaser when Q was announced, and isn't actually in the final film.

It's not? Aw man, this could've made for some neat speculation :sniffle:

The unused footage does bring a question to mind, though... Is the giant blood splash something that had always been there, or something that happened as a result of 3I? We see at the end of 1.0 (and 2.0, too?) that the stain is too small to be visible from Earth. Do the 3.0 preview and final actually show the same part of the moon's surface, though? Can someone whose Eva archives are in better shape than mine check?

You can't see it from earth, but the teaser suggests, that Asuka got pretty close to the moon there. She really seems to be in space, instead of being in orbit, like she was in the actual movie.

Normally, the moon is tidal locked to the earth, so we see the same part of the surface all the time, but since the moon seems to be spinning much faster as a result of coming closer, it's impossible to know when we see which part of the moon.

It doesn't match the blood splats on the moon in 3.0. It's probably a mock-up of the streak that was already there, or perhaps a very early version of the blood-coated moon that got expanded in the making. Unit 02's prosthetic arm is just a normal Eva arm colored grey.
Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

Q Moon...
You saw me standin' alone...
Without a dream in my heart...
Without a love of my own...

(It had to be done. )

But yeah, the second picture is probably not in 3.33. I don't remember them ever getting that close to the moon. In the second pic the moon is much further from the earth (but still not where it should be). In the first one it's close enough to leech some of the atmosphere away from the earth via gravity. By the way, the moon is actually a lot further away from the earth than it appears to be from our point of view:
