Continuing a tangent that started in another thread. I wanted to take a look at the Evangelion creature under the armor and see how they compare and contrast to each other and what we know about the original Evas.

I'll go in order starting with
Unit 00:
The only glimpse we get of the real Unit 00 is at the end of 1.0, when part of its armor has been burned off by Ramiel's positron beam. We can see the ends of its hands and some swollen, bubbling flesh in the cracks of the knee joints:
SPOILER: Show
Image

It's very difficult to tell because of the lighting and the burn damage, but it appears to have brown flesh like the original Unit 00 did. Curiously, it doesn't have the knuckle dusters embedded in its hands here.

Unit 01:
Unit 01 appears without its helmet very briefly during the Operation Yashima preparations
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

It's bandaged and submerged in red LCL, so we don't get any insight into the color of its eyes or head, but the overall profile looks very similar to the NGE Unit 01. It looks like the sclera might be white instead of green this time.

The teeth aren't visible here, but we get several good looks at them in the next movie:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image
Image

They very in number and shape from shot to shot, but we can see that it has a deep, u-shaped mouth and that the teeth are red for some reason. There's a hint of what looks like gum visible between the teeth and the helmet.

The skin this Unit 01's hands and chests is a pale white color, pretty close to human tone. It has clearly defined fingernails and a single large red core set in its chest. It lacks the two smaller cores the other Unit 01 has:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image
Image

In this next shot and the first shot of the teeth, you can see the edge of Unit 01's mouth, and it's black:
SPOILER: Show
Image

I'm not sure what to make of this. Most of the Evas do wear a black under-armor suit but it usually stops at the neck and doesn't cover the face. Eva 13 has this too, so I'm not sure if it's part of the suit or if Unit 01 possibly has two tone white and black skin instead of the light/dark brown skin it had in NGE.

In the first pseudo-evolved form, Unit 01's eyes glow pure red and it occasionally emits fierce red light from its mouth:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

It seems like the glowing mouth might be related to the eye beams. It only glows right before or right after Unit 01 uses that power.

Just before entering the second phase, the Eva's body becomes translucent, showing off its nervous system and glowing heart:
SPOILER: Show
Image

The second phase transforms it into a blazing reddish-purple energy being with two cores and a third eye. It's still translucent, and it manifests at least 12 wings of light from the region of its two cores:
SPOILER: Show
Image

*Update*: An infographic pops up on Maya's screen when Unit 01 is fighting Sachiel that shows us two interesting tidbits about the Eva:
SPOILER: Show
Image

Unit 01's blood type is blue derivative. Blue **A' vs Sachiel's blue 04. The other is the origin of the Eva's AT Field: it's being generated by the entry plug and the core unit, where the Eva's human elements reside. Just speculation, but I think this might explain why Unit 01 can generate an AT Field but Unit 13 can't. It's been modified by Yui's presence in the core as a "pilot interface."

Halo: Unit 01's halo has a broad ring that's ragged on the inner and outer edges. It's predominantly white, but there are very light splashes of color throughout the ring:
SPOILER: Show
Image

After Unit 01 takes over as the power source of Wunder, the ship manifests two concentric halos with extremely similar structure and coloration:
SPOILER: Show
Image

Unit 02:
Unit 02 only sheds its armor in its two beast forms, which both alter its anatomy quite a lot. This ability combined with the presence of the limiter rods makes it unclear what the Eva "normally" looks like. Is it supposed to be a human-shaped? Is it really a cat?

The first form extends the Eva's limbs and neck, and the torso grows thicker and longer:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

And just like End of Eva, there's no hint of a core on the Eva's chest. We know it has one and the housing unit hangs out the Eva's remains after it self-destructs. It seems like it should be right between the red v-plate and the pattern on the chest.

Unit 02 rips its helmet apart, revealing a huge mouth full of needle-like teeth that appear to be embedded on the outside of the mouth. It's been suggested that the "teeth" are actually staples or sutures holding the mouth shut since the Eva struggles to open its mouth, but I think that's because it has to break the lower jaw on the helmet:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

You can also see grey flesh on the back of its neck. Unlike the NGE Unit 02, this one has red blood.

The Unit 02 in 3.0 looks completely different from this one. It still has grey flesh, but the mouth is much more broad and shallow, there are fewer teeth and they're now proper teeth instead of those skinny needle teeth from 2.0. It's actually kinda pug-faced and lumpy now:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

The lumps of its spine are visible on its back:
SPOILER: Show
Image

*Update*: Here's a better look at this beast form:
SPOILER: Show
Image

You can see how shallow its skull is in that profile shot. Much shorter and more human like than the normal elongated, narrow Eva skull.

Code 777 throws the human body type to the wind and transforms Unit 02 into a long-bodied sabertooth cat, complete with paws and a tail. The limiters break off of its body and it gains more defined musculature, especially around the jaws. Still no hint of a core, though:
SPOILER: Show
Image

We get a really good look at its innards after it explodes, including what I believe is the core housing ring dangling from the bottom of the chest right next to the spine.
SPOILER: Show
Image

*Update*: At Reichu's suggestion, I collected some images and art of Unit 02 when its core is being removed for containment:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

The Eva's chest plate has been removed. The chest itself is blacked out and shadowed, so we can't see where the core actually sits, but judging by the position of the UFO catcher claw holding the core, we can infer that the core would be sandwiched between the pectorals and the first abdominal plate. It's a little lower than Unit 01's core, but right where you'd expect an Eva's core to be.

This scene shows us another interesting fact: a normal Eva's body does not collapse when the core is removed or destroyed like an Angel's does. Unit 02's body is still somewhat intact after it explodes, Unit 03 leaves its bloody gibs scattered all over town, and Unit 00's leg stumps spew blood but don't seem to explode.

Unit 03:
We get a nice closeup of Unit 03's eyes as it flips toward Unit 01, showing the three smaller circles within the iris that were present in the old Evas.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Unit 01 crushes its head open during its brutal dismemberment, and we get some fragmentary glimpses at the Eva's true colors. The sclerae and irises of its eyes are both green. It also has teeth and a tongue which aren't visible when its mouth is open for some reason. The teeth are embedded in a charcoal colored piece of flesh. Perhaps they're embedded on the outside of the mouth like Unit 02? Gore warning:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

The Eva grows an extra set of arms out of its shoulders and has extendable, rubbery limbs as a result of its infection by the 9th Angel.

Mark.04A:
4A takes the form of a saucer with two cores on the under side and four pylons mounted on the top:
SPOILER: Show
Image

4A has a trait not seen in the other Mark.04 units: in the profile shots, it appears to have a normal Evangelion torso sticking out of the bottom, complete with legs that taper into two blades.

The Eva torso is actually mirrored on both sides. The front and back have identical chevron plates and pelvic boots, with no spinal armor seen in the normal Eva Units. It can even rotate a full 360 degrees with no trouble.
SPOILER: Show
Image

The "thighs" are cut in half. The insides are flat and conceal the energy shotgun weapon the Eva uses to destroy Unit 02's AESS shield. The bladed legs can split in half at the knees to form four spidery legs.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Mari is able to destroy them with a single shot fired lengthwise through the saucer section, which causes the Eva to detonate in a pink explosion:
SPOILER: Show
Image

A couple more interesting notes: 4A is able to mask its location with a cloaking cocoon like 4C, although we never get to see this in action:
SPOILER: Show
Image

They can fly very, very quickly by propelling themselves with a layered octagonal field that's similar to an AT Field. This field is primarily blue-green and lacks the inner rings seen in AT Fields. Here's a nice comparison against Unit 02:
SPOILER: Show
Image

Wille appears to be using several stripped down 4As as the N2 Reactor power sources for their ships. The armor on the pylons and saucer havs been stripped away, revealing the mechanical structures underneath. The torsos have been removed and the saucer sections are held up on scaffolding. You can see three on the left and two more in the lower right:
SPOILER: Show
Image

Mark.04B:
4B is a saucer with two pylons, one core, and no apparent appendages. It's able to deploy long reflective ribbons from its housing on the tesseract, and the saucer can move along them at high speeds, but it isn't attached by anything. When Unit 01's Buster Beam shreds the ribbons, the saucer goes flying off the end into space.
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

Unlike the 4A, 4B doesn't have any visible means of propulsion. It just slides along the ribbons like a top. It's never mentioned as having a cloaking cocoon, but the box it hides in serves the same purpose. Unit 02 never detects it until it's ready to attack.

When the Eva kicks into action, Magi Achiral identifies it as a pattern blue, or specifically, "Blood Type≈Blue." The 4Cs are also pattern blue, and it's probably safe to assume the 4As are as well. Possibly related to Unit 01's unusual blood type?

After getting bisected by Unit 01, 4B's body erupts into a shower of blood like an Angel, complete with cross and rainbow.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Mark.04C:
Code 4C's saucer section is blown open by the Wunder's main guns, showing us that the inside is apparently just huge disc of core, very similar to the Mark.09:
SPOILER: Show
Image

It has several smaller cores embedded on the outside of the saucer and wavy filament-like arms, but they don't appear to correspond with anything inside the Eva's structure. Upon death, they explode into crosses and rainbows.

Mark.06:
Our best view of an unarmored Eva yet! Mark.06 has a lean, tightly muscled body, a lumpy, egg-shaped head with little ears, and dark greenish grey flesh:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image
Image

The ears are a curious detail. It's the only Eva we've ever seen that has external ears and the only other giant besides Lilith. Adam doesn't seem to have them either. There's big lump in its suit just under the chest which is most likely the core, and it has a mask stitched to its face. There are two holes in the mask of unknown origin. Could they be a stab wound from a Spear of Longinus?

The Eva's eyes are covered by the mask and by a visor, but the official artwork and preview at the end show that it has two:
SPOILER: Show
Image

The uncovered Eva is wearing a greenish body suit with ribs along the shoulders. After Unit 01 is heavily damaged by Sahaquiel later in the film, you can see a similar suit through the hole in the shoulder armor:
SPOILER: Show
Image

*Update*:
Halo: Mark.06's halo in 2.0 is small, thin and wispy, more solid on the outside edge and turning ragged torward the middle. It's purple and white:
SPOILER: Show
Image

The Eva's corpse farts out a similar halo in 3.0. There's more color variance and it quickly expands and dissipates, but the composition of the ring is practically the same:
SPOILER: Show
Image

In the next post, Reichu mentions the Eva's helmet having jaw articulation, a strange feature when it appears to be wearing that Seele mask under the helmet. This was first revealed in the action figures, but you can just barely see it in action in 3.0. As the 12th Angel thrashes around in Mark.06's empty armor, you can see the jaw armor tremble and move up and down just a little bit, like the mouth is trying to open:
SPOILER: Show
Image

The Eva's visor in that shot is filled with the red glowing clusters that make up the 12th Angel's body. Concept art from the 2.0 CRC shows the Eva having another layer of armor underneath the visor that forms eye holes. Further evidence that the 3.0 Mark.06 is nothing but a hollowed out husk:
SPOILER: Show
Image

In the very first image in this section, you can see that Mark.06 is hooked up to an IV that's labelled "BTB." The most obvious breakdown for that acronym is "blood type blue." Is Seele giving the Eva a transfusion of Angel blood? There's certainly enough of it laying around after Sachiel and Shamshel are defeated.

Mark.09/The Vessel of the Adams:
Hoo boy. It looks like a big-eyed Unit 00 at first, but the weirdness kicks in when Mari caps it in the skull:
SPOILER: Show
Image
She blows a hole right through the helmet and a bit of blood (or what looks like blood) flies out, but there's no trace of a brain or anything else in there. Eva head wounds usually gush blood like a geyser, but not this one. Mark.09 even sprays blood when Unit 02 tears its head off:
SPOILER: Show
Image

Two more shots take the head completely off. A bit of blood sprays, bits of the helmet go flying, and the eyeball briefly dangles from a cable or something, but there's still nothing organic that we can see:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

*Update*: Reichu helpfully pointed out that Mark.09 does have a lower jaw and tongue visible for just a few frames as its head is exploding:
SPOILER: Show
Image

We also get a few good looks at its neck stump later on in the movie, and there aren't any bones or meat visible. It's just a flat plate with a hole:
SPOILER: Show
Image

Near the end, it sprouts a new head with a horn and twelve glowing circular eyes. It has a large mouth full of fangs and a triangular tongue:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

It's not clear if this new head is what the Vessel's head really looks like, or if it's wearing some kind of helmet.

The Vessel is able to change the color of its body. It's originally yellow-orange, white and grey, but it turns black with a bright red under-armor layer after flashing blue
SPOILER: Show
Image

It sprouts glowing blue tentacles from its legs that are able to infect and hijack the Wunder's machinery. They look similar to the blue gel that made up Bardiel's core without the weird staples. The color and effect are different from the blue color shift above, though.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Here we get a good look at the Vessel's body under the abdominal plate. There's Seele's mask-plate protecting the core, the core itself, and the Eva's body, which is a huge lump of core with a vertical streaking pattern in it.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Why does it need the protective plate or another core when it's already made of the stuff? Asuka shoots five rounds of Anti-Eva ammo right into the core through the entry plug chute. The Vessel just reforms itself with no damage. It even looks like it's made of a bunch of cores that are tightly crammed together into an Eva-shape:
SPOILER: Show
Image

*Update*:
Halo: Mark.09's halo is very broad and slightly thin. The ring is very tight and rainbow colored, with a bit of fraying at the edges on the outside and inside:
SPOILER: Show
Image

It's not as bright or intense, but the halo's color and effects are very similar to Eva 13's smaller inner halo.

Unit 13:
Unit 13 is the first Eva explicitly confirmed to be an Adam, but it has two features we don't see on any of the four Adams in the flashback: four eyes and four arms. Unlike Unit 02's four eyes, those are right beside each other, so close that they press into each other when the Eva begins to awaken:
SPOILER: Show
Image

It's very possible these were added to the Adam by Nerv/Seele while it was being built, and that it would normally have only two of each. Some people have speculated that Unit 13 is actually the two missing Adams fused or grafted together somehow. Maybe it's a fifth Adam that hasn't appeared before. We've only seen evidence of four, but the Vessel wasn't exactly foreshadowed either.

Like Unit 01, Unit 13's teeth appear to be set in gums within the mouth. The teeth are large, white, diamond-shaped fangs with two wider incisors in the front.
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

You can see the black corners of the mouth in this shot, too. Flesh? Suit?

As it transitions into its awakened form, the Eva blows off its pylons and sprouts blocky red protrusions from its shoulders that form into smooth wing-like structures:
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image

The blocks look very similar to core but lack the distinctive glistening pattern. They're just solid red. The blocks are also kind of similar to the black structures that make up the 12th Angel.

There's an x-shaped indentation in Unit 13's chest plate where the lower arms normally rest. It glows a furious red color when the Eva collapses the giant Lilith fetus into a core and then stops. It's somewhat similar to Unit 01's glowing mouth in that regard.
SPOILER: Show
Image

One last interesting detail: Unit 13 does not appear to have the usual mechanical spinal socket that the other Evas do. Instead the entry plugs are inserted into pools of purple light:
SPOILER: Show
Image

The normal sound effects play when the plugs catch and lock into place, but there's never any visible machinery.

*Update*:
Halo: Unit 13 has two intense halos oriented behind it instead of over the head like the other Evas. They're both bright, tightly focused and spin very quickly. They're both rainbow colored in some shots, but in others the inner one is rainbow colored and the outer one is predominantly pink.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Unit Null
A new Eva of dubious canon status coming courtesy of the Animator Expo. Unit Null is very mysterious, but the concept artists were kind enough to provide us with a nice view of its head:
SPOILER: Show
Image

Seems to have the normal narrow Eva skull. The forehead has markings that could indicate scarring or the pseudo-Angel mask NGE Units 01 and 02 had. The chin is longer and more pointed than other Evas we've seen and it has a downturned, frowny sort of mouth. Null appears to have had its eyes removed; there are scars where they should be. Accordingly, the Eva's helmet has no eye holes, just glowing blue lights encircling the area the eyes should be. It's somehow able to see even without any eyeballs. Perhaps it's able to see through the cameras mounted on its body, or through whatever means the Vessel uses.

Adams?
Lastly, there are these four weirdos who briefly appear in Until you come to me.
SPOILER: Show
Image

They seem like decent candidates for the Adams circa Second Impact. They have thin, emaciated looking bodies with protruding spines and rib-like structures on their chests. They have the trademark creepy glowing Eva eye, but green as opposed to the red ones we've seen so far. The teeth are very similar to Unit 01's, but they're white and embedded on the outside of the mouth with no visible gums. The color's off in this scene, but it looks like they have light brown skin. That guy in the back doesn't seem to have a core, either.

They do somewhat resemble Unit 01 aside from the external teeth, but Mark.06 doesn't look anything like this and the mouths and eyes are all wrong for Unit 13. They're much more thin and wiry than NGE Adam and it had a rounded cranium without that protrusion at the back of the skull. Even if they're not the Adams, it's still a treat to get such a clear look at these creatures.

Eva Simulator
SPOILER: Show
Image

This hideous thing appears in 1.0 as the new Eva test/simulation body. It looks like a stripped down Eva skull and spine with some questionably organic parts. The spine is a mechanical Eva spine and is outfitted with the usual entry plug mechanism to hold the simulation plug. It doesn't have a core at all. Instead the entry plug connects to a gasmask-like apparatus that is in turn connected to the head where the mouth would be. NERV has cores mounted in the floor for harmonics tests in 2.0, so I can't imagine why this doesn't have one.

The head also looks like it's mostly mechanical. The robotic eyes swivel rapidly in all directions and the head is interlaced with pink things that could be either cables or muscle tissue. The pink thing in the throat pulsates regularly and I think that is organic, but I'm not entirely sure what it is. But when the head is viewed from above...
SPOILER: Show
Image

There's a brain in there! It could be an artificial brain like the MAGI used in NGE, but that is definitely a brain. The rest of the chamber is just made up of wires and support cables connected to the head and spine.

It's fascinating how much diversity there is between the Rebuild Evas. None of them look very similar at all except for Units 01 and 13.

Hah, never expected to see anyone else give this level of attention to Evangelion anatomy. Love it!

Having been a studious student of the original Evangelions and every unofficial variation I could find, it was hard to avoid the conclusion that anatomical consistency was very low on the list of priorities. This doesn't seem to have changed with the shift to higher production values, sadly. Ultimately, the fan has little recourse but to imagine something that makes sense to them, based on the bits and pieces glimpsed. In that sense, detailed breakdowns like yours are definitely useful, since they attempt to collect all of the scattered data in one place.

Some notes:

Eva-00
- We see 00 blocking the Angel's beam with the backs of her hands, so in all likelihood the knuckle dusters were vaporized.
- Interesting bit of trivia: Eva-00's core is what Eva-01 retrieves from the 10th Angel.

Eva-01
- Teeth of bandaged head are visible in the genga. We can also see, for once, a distinct tear duct.
SPOILER: Show
Image

- "Edge of the mouth is black" - This is probably just an animation convention. Black is the go-to for anything on the Evas that does not receive the benefit of detail. It's always been this way. Eva-00 is a good example, with the sizable black-colored area of jaw that's covered by neither the tiny mandible piece or the face mask. It could be a body suit, but it could also just be detail-conversing shadow. There's no way to know without the benefit of official supplemental artwork that "fills in the gaps".
- Glowing mouth: Incidentally, we briefly see the inside of 01's mouth glow in EoE, after she escapes her cage and sprouts two wings. It's not as deliberate a detail, though.

Eva-02
- The rods are actually called "constrictors"; the English translation appears in an on-screen display when Eva-02's are being released. "Limiter" is something different, but it's hard to say precisely what as they are never, AFAIK, seen.
- Mari's talk about "abandoning human form" would imply that Eva-02's true form is its humanoid one, while the lizard-beast and panther are abandonments thereof. This seems to be borrowed from how Misato describes the Angels in EoE, as a humanity that abandons human form -- demonstrated in episode 10 by Sandalphon, who begins with a humanoid shape and subsequently "abandons" it for its individualized one.
- Before Eva-02 goes all catty in 3.0, I'm pretty sure we're just seeing an "unleashed" version of its regular humanoid form. Since this is the first time we've seen it, the face does, of course, look different from the beast-lizard of 2.0.
- Agreed that we can see the cylindrical casing for the entry plug at the end of 3.0.
- Where the core is visible in the IPEA containment scene may be worthy of a screenshot. It is conspicuous that the core is never shown elsewhere. EoE had the same problem. (Laughable in that case, since the Eva's solar plexus was fully exposed!)
- An unusual difference from NGE is that there are four additional nostril holes on the helmet, located on the same place where NGE!01's can be found. (I say "additional" because what's left of 02's head when we see it in EoE has no visible nares and the forehead section missing. Since the only nostril holes were on the helmet's forehead section, it's reasonable to think we don't see any nares because the corresponding part of the head is, er, not available for reference.)

Eva-03
- The initial close-up on the eye shows much more than the three sub-pupils we're accustomed to; there's a whole bunch of tiny, regularly arranged apertures that have never been seen before or since. To me, they give the eye a uniquely mechanical appearance, suggesting that perhaps Eva-03's eyes have been enhanced, or might be prosthetic replacements altogether.
-- Possibly corroborating this: when we see Eva-03 lift off from the US, the eye holes are covered by removable tabs that say, "CAUTION: HANDLE WITH CARE: SENSORY ARRAY INSIDE: REMOVE PRIOR TO OPERATIONS". Maybe "sensory array" is just the usual double-speak for "totally normal biological eyeball", but, then again, maybe not.
- Eva-03's skeletal remains are also ambiguously artificial. The resemblance between them and what's left after Kiel melts in EoE has been noted, I believe. Or perhaps I'm getting confused with the weird stuff lying in the background of the plug-crushing shot in #18. (Reichu: still wishing all her Eva crap was on a single hard drive...)

Mark.04
- No coverage of the A and B? A is especially interesting since it has vestiges of legs.

Mark.06
- If you look at the two "puncture" holes closely, you can see that there are stylized tears running from both. This would be a difficult detail to explain if the holes were purely incidental.
- The Eva's eyes ultimately being visible through the helmet's visor suggests to me that the "sleeping mask" was placed there temporarily, to keep the Eva's eyes covered right until they could be once again covered by the mask proper. The reason might have something to do with Seele regarding Mark.06 as their personal god and not wishing for anyone to gaze directly upon its face.
- Since it's implied that the Eva retains the Lilith-esque mask beneath its Eva one -- just with the eye section cut out -- why do they bother providing mandibular articulation...? Even more odd that 06's mask is made to fit the typical narrow Eva skull, rather than the egg-head that 06 inexplicably possesses.

Mark.09
- If you go through the destruction of the head frame by frame, you can see a lower jaw, a tongue, and some loose brain matter.
- The "cable" that the eyeball is hanging from actually seems to be multiple optic nerves. This implies that Nerv gouged out whatever facsimile of real eyes the Eva originally had and reattached the nerves to the replacement. Gross.

Simulation Body
- Worthy of a look, yes?

Aww, thanks! The Evas and the mysteries surrounded them are my favorite parts of Evangelion. They deserve the attention! :asuka_thumbsup:

That's the impression that I got too, that the animators had a general idea what the Eva would look like and just winged it from there. I think it reaches the peak in End of Evangelion. Poor Unit 02 has three different head designs in the span of ten minutes!

Holy crap! Unit 01 looks even creepier with that gap-toothed derp grin. What an excellent shot. You can't even see the contours of the nose/lip in the on-screen version. The eyes are a little farther apart and the teeth are more recessed, but it really does resemble those Adam-things from Until you come to me. Thanks for that! It looks like the forehead is more rounded off than the NGE version. No pseudo-Angel mask?

I debated whether or not to include this page from the CRC:
SPOILER: Show
Image

It's a very nice sketch of Unit 01 in the buff. I also meant to but forgot to include a shot of the screen when Unit 01 first deploys its AT Field in 1.0, which shows that the field is being sourced to the core unit and the plug. I can't help feeling that's important. It also shows Unit 01's blood type, iirc.

Good catch on Unit 02's extra nostrils. Maybe they "nostrils" on the horns are just additional air holes and don't cover the nose? In the turnaround views of 02 gamma's head, it looks like the back side of the horn crest is flat and it only connects to the helmet at the bottom. I just noticed that gamma's head is much stockier than the 2.0 version's. The helmet doesn't extend as far from the neck in either the front or the back.

I'll add the core removal scene to my list of updates to make. It looks like the chest plate is missing in that scene, but the two abdominal plates are still attached. Gamma's transitional beast form has a suspicious lump on the torso but it's much too low to be the core, methinks.

03's skeleton does look artificial in this:
SPOILER: Show
Image

There are holes bored into the bones of the arms.

I should probably include at least 4A. I left A and B out since we never see their innards, but you make a good point about the legs. It has two sets of legs and what looks like a mirrored torso in the center to support both sets. That's definitely worth a look!

I assumed Seele might have cut Mark.06's mask off and let it fall away just before they slapped the helmet on, but if that's the case, why bother with the provisional visor at all? Why couldn't Anno just give it a normal head?

Ah, I see the jaw and tongue now! How the hell does that even work? If you compare the head before and after, it looks like the eyeball is IN its mouth. :cringe:

Yes, the simulation body IS worth a look! You're talking about the creepy stripped down head in 1.0, right?

Quick observation: Eva-02's chest plate is still there where she goes into deep freeze. (You can see it in the right-most CG model on that CRC page.) Though here, again, we see that "color everything we don't feel like detailing black" trope that I mentioned earlier -- perhaps the most egregious example.

Great thread. A suggestion to add: when Shinji is placed in charge of firing at Ramiel and Unit 01 is being outfitted with the sniping gear, the mask it's being fitted with looked very suspicious to me. It had several eyes(11? 12?). Might be worth examining the anatomy.

Great posts, man. The information is laid out really nice.

I do have a question about Null though - when did it get 'revealed'? I hadn't heard about it til now. Do we have any other info on it aside from that sketch?

The sniping gear was basically just a pylon attachment, if memory serves. Eva-01's mask remains the same throughout the film, even after it is destroyed and replaced. I'm not sure what you're referring to here.

The sniping mask attached to 01 has like a bunch of eyes and imo resembles the Wunder's bridge eyes(as witnessed by Shinji when he was in the bridge). The scene is iirc relatively short and missable.

What's dangling there in the screenshot you posted is one of at least two similar-looking components in the body of the positron cannon (evidenced by looking at the concept art in 1.0 CRC). There's some chickenscratch that seems to identify it as a "receiver"; the lens-looking things are probably antennae.

Has nothing to do with any of the equipment worn by Eva-01, anyway.

Like Arcadia's legacy already said, it debuted in Another Impact [Confidential] back in the first season of the Animator Expo. It was designed by Atsushi Takeuchi and is one of the most detailed Evas:

I found something really neat while checking the concept art archive for that picture. There's an untextured render of the bare head and torso!
SPOILER: Show
Image

The head lacks facial details, but just look at that musculature on the torso. It seems to have armor plates embedded in both the front and back of its abdomen as well as a pelvic boot. There's something built around the neck too. Null's body appears to have more exposed cybernetic implants than the other Evas.

Since this thread is already delving into the nitty gritty of the Eva Units, I'll go ahead and bump this instead of making a new topic.

I've been wanting to take a look at the distinction between the Mark Evas and the Unit Evas to see if we can't determine what separates the two. The movie offers no commentary on the matter, but I've been able to pick out a few traits that are common to the Mark sub-series.

1. Internal Power Source-
Mark.06, Mark.09, and the three variants of Mark.04 all operate with no umbilical cables or any other connections to external power sources. I assume Marks.06 and 09 posses S2 Engines/Fruits of Life being Adam-derived life forms. Mark.04 might also have them, but since Wille is using them as N2 reactors for the Wunder, it's possible they have working versions of the internal engine that was being tested on the lost Unit 04.

2. Flight-
All five Evas demonstrate the ability to fly without the aid of equipment. Mark.06 manifests a halo and flies like some of the Angels do. Mark.09 uses that huge booster rocket in its introduction, but once it sheds the Mark.09 guise and transforms into the Vessel of the Adams, it's able to fly in the same way as Mark.06. 4A pushes itself with some kind of AT Field, while B and C just kind of hover.

3. Autonomous Operation-
The Eva is able to operate without a pilot. The Vessel of the Adams switches over to some kind of Seele OS, breaks synchronization, overrides Rei's controls and begins acting apparently of its own accord. It continues this way after Rei ejects, so it's not using a Dummy Plug. The Mark.04 Units are unmanned drones and have no visible ports or access points for an Entry Plug. We never see Mark.06 acting without a pilot, but Kaworu says it was modified to have that ability before its death. There aren't any further details, but it's possible that Mark.06 was the first Eva to use whatever is running Marks.09 and 04.

Unit 01 meets conditions 1 and 2 after it awakens, but not 3. It is completely dormant and refuses to move without Shinji on board. It rejects the Dummy Plug outright when Gendo tries to give it independence. The Unit 01 from NGE does meet all three criteria after End of Evangelion.

It really puzzled me why Evangelion 13 wasn't a Mark. It has unlimited internal power, and it unlocks flight mode after seizing the Spears of Longinus. I don't think it meets condition 3. Shinji's controls are overridden by something and the Eva at first appears to be acting on its own, but once Kaworu dies and Shinji is out, it completely powers down and crashes to the Earth. The Spears might have had something to do with that, but it's weird that it wasn't forced into dormancy before Shinji ejected.

The Mark units also have unusual methods of construction and deviate from the standard Production Model design (fleet of flying saucers, elongated torsos), but with Units 01, 05, 13 and the other weirdness in the Eva series, I don't think that should be counted as a defining characteristic.
Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

Just saw this topic. Fantastic work BlueBasilisk, the pictures are amazing and there's some stuff I didn't noticed until now.

Regarding the Mark or Eva nomenclature I thought I could variate based on the manufacturer: with the exception of Unit-05 that is manufactured by IPEA I think that all the "Eva" units are made by NERV (or IPEA and NERV actually workedtogether on the manufacturing as groups of the UN, I don't know), "Mark" units are instead all manufactured and controlled directly by SEELE.

Unit 00 and 01 we know were devoleped by NERV JP, Unit 02 by NERV GER, Unit 03 and 04 by NERV US. Unit 05 was in a NERV base too but as I mentioned it was shown in a NERV but it was manufactured by IPEA. Unit 13 is again under Gendo's control.

Unit 8 is "just there" by I suppose is not something created by SEELE.

Mark 6 is manufactured on the Moon and Gendo doesn't get permission to land from SEELE, Mark 9 has a SEELE OS onboard.

Mark 4A/B/C are something totally different from the other Eva/Mark units but I tend to think them as a creation of the SEELE.

I also have a theory about Eva-01 and Eva-00 being originated from the same Adam:

At the end of 2.0 Unit-01 reach phase 2 of its pseudo evolved form after having absorbed the core of Unit-00 from the Angel.

SPOILER: Show

SPOILER: Show

Earlier in the movie and in the preview from 1.0 we are shown the Adams. Their core design and number of eyes doesn't change while the silhouette is a bit different.

What I find interesting is that the 3 eyed Adam has is core cut out from the frame in 2.0, while the other three Adams' core are clearly visible. However in the preview, while still being much more undefined compared to the other three Adams, the core part is recognizable and to me it looks like two stars in a binary system.

SPOILER: Show

Gendo also stated earlier that bringing Shinji and Rei closer is part of his plan to awake Unit-01 and at the end of the movie is Shinji's desire to save Rei that triggers the Eva trasformation into a god so I think my theory could be true. Or maybe it's not.

Out of curiosity, why were Units 05 and 08 excluded?

I had a reason at the time, but it's been so long that I can't remember what it was. -o-; In Unit 08's case, I think I excluded it because it's always fully armored and we never get a peek at what's underneath.

Even in the preview? It's lost its arms there, so we at least know it has red blood.

Are you confusing the scene toward the end where Eva-08 is lying on top of the Wunder -- with its corroded (but still attached and mostly intact) arms all bandaged up -- for something else?
