Playstation VR

Today we finally got hard data on the Playstation VR, including pricing, release date, and pictures of the finished product.

http://gematsu.com/2016/03/playstation- ... r-2016-399

Playstation VR will launch this October and is priced at $399. Keep in mind that this price does not include the PS4 you'll need in order to use it. From what I can tell the PS4 does the bulk of the processing, then the signal is sent to a secondary wearable processor box roughly the size of a Wii that handles the extra processing needed to enable VR gaming. Then the visual feed is sent to the headset.

What I'm amazed by, though, is the shitload of support this new platform is already getting. Over 50 games for PS VR are scheduled to release by the end of this year alone. And there is a huge list of developers working on games for it, including big names like Square Enix, Koei Tecmo, and (surprisingly) Konami. The full list is in the article. Damn, I wish Sony would give the Vita this kind of support.

By the way, VR games in general are expected to be significantly larger in terms of data than non-VR games. Possibly 80 to 100 gigabytes each for the current gen according to an article I read somewhere.

Anyhow I'm still not sold on VR gaming, but this does seem interesting and I will be keeping track of it to see how it turns out.

Looks like a pretty nice piece of kit. I too though am not sold on VR just yet. I'm going to give it awhile before even thinking about buying it, or an Oculus Rift for my PC. The biggest issue I have with it at current is the absolutely massive GPU power it takes to run VR. (My Desktop comes in at the min specs for the Rift as I have virtually the exact same hardware) It'll be interesting to see the level of fidelity Sony is able to pull off with the PS4 though.

It turns out the VR also requires the $60 PS Camera in order to work properly, as well as two Playstation Move controllers (I had no idea these were still being made), which are $50 each. So if you're starting with nothing, getting PS VR up and running is going to cost you roughly $910... plus the cost of games. :cringe:

Pre-orders for the launch bundle will begin March 22 in North America.

http://gematsu.com/2016/03/playstation- ... th-america

The bundle includes everything that's in the standard kit plus the two Move controllers, a Playstation Camera, and a demo disc (Playstation VR Worlds) for $499. That's actually a pretty good deal, bringing the total cost of getting PS VR up and running down from $910 to $850.

I've started saving for one. I've been impressed by the Samsung Gear VR one of the guys at work has so decided I'll give this a try. Hopefully it'll get good support beyond launch.

Only a demo disc? For that price, they should put a full game in lol.

Could you give some more impressions? Was it like most us imagine it (realistic) or is it like looking on a big projector? Did you noticed any black bars up and down (or on the sides)?

cinema mode for PS4 games

Well, I do want to buy FFXV, but don't want to buy a HD TV to play it. This might be my solution.

Well, the basic set by itself is $399 and two move controllers are $100, so you're pretty much getting the $60 camera and the demo disc for free.

Anyhow, the thing that intrigues me the most so far is the cinema mode for non-VR PS4 games. That's something I could get a lot of use out of if they do it right. Koei Tecmo has already said DOAX3 will support VR at some point after launch, by the way. :shifty:

The PS VR game that intrigues me the most so far is Golem.

http://gematsu.com/2016/03/first-look-g ... station-vr

Basically you play as a little girl who is bedridden, but somehow has the power to possess golems of various sizes, and use them to perform tasks outside. Sounds fun, and it seems to have really good production values as well.

Wow, they've become so cheap? But don't they have eye cancer inducing displays?

The real important question is, when The World will happen, though. And yes, I couldn't care less about the SAO thing.

It was fairly realistic to my eyes, the guy had one that 'Keep Talking and No One Explodes' game and it was amazing to be able to sit and turn around and find yourself in a completely new environment. Very jarring as well. It was amazing produced on a phone and it did make me wonder what systems like the Playstation VR/Rift/Vive can do.

The people around me who I work with were impressed by it as well. (I work in a games studio)

Thanks for the impressions! Sounds like it may live up to the hype. Can't wait to try one myself.

Two years ago I bought a Sanyo 39" 1080p 60Hz TV for $350, and it looks beautiful. So yes, you can get a great TV for under $400, even a couple years ago.
