You've made a hypocrite out of me, Zeta. One last post .

Star Wars is a piss poor example & people should stop using it in comparison with other series.

Star Wars has never left popular consciousness. It never needed to be revived. It just needed more. Since 1999 there has never been a pause in production on Star Wars movies, Star Wars cartoons, Star Wars toys, Star Wars videogames, Star Wars commericial tie-ins with popular cars in Super Bowl Ads, Star Wars books etc. Star Wars has never left popular culture. It's been omnipresent since 1999. As someone who is not a fan of the series whatsoever - they still haven't made a GREAT Star Wars movie in 30 years - even I was aware of the series constant presence when I would go into book stores & see standies for new Star Wars books or I would turn on the TV & see a child Darth Vader hocking some new Ford van or whatever it was. Star Wars IS Marketing. I bet every living person in the Western world whether they want it or not receives some sort of Star Wars stimuli every day whether it's a damn meme or a joke with a lightsaber or some other use of that series rather impressive longstanding iconography.

And let's not forget A HUGE PART of the marketing for Episode 7 was about not-so-subtly pointing out that "this new film has nothing to do with those prequels you guys hate so much. Nah, this is classic Star Wars" & this 'reboot' to use your terminology loved using the original cast of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew & more to shill the new project. Plus, The Force Awakens outside of it's solid casting (Daisy Ridley got death/rape threats & there was an online movement to recast John Boyega because 'Black People Can't Lead No Star Wars') did very little to distinguish itself from what came before.

Ghostbusters has not been an omnipresent in pop culture. There's been maybe a videogame to appeal to video game fans, an occasional cartoon & a little bit of merchandize here & there. It's not been anything close to resembling the never-ending marketing machine that is Star Wars.

If you're going to make the bullshit "let's compare one existing property to another" at least use Jurassic World. That's the closest comparison to the new Ghostbusters. At least start your argument from that point. Now there's an awful film that deserves the negativity that Ghostbusters has received. But, Jurassic World did nothing new & pandered to angry male fans so it got off pretty free.

Now I'm done.

(I just don't like people acting like you can compare a series to Star Wars as equals. When it comes to pop culture the juggernaut that is Star Wars stands alone. You can't compare Alien, Mad Max, Back to the Future or Ghostbusters to Star Wars. The closest comparison now could be the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that has spent almost a decade bringing out interconnected movies at the pace of one every 8 to 9 months.)

How did Jurassic World pander to angry male fans?

Might have gone a bit far with the angry male fans line.

The movie does pander 100% to fans. Particularly male fans who grew up on Jurassic Park. The storyline for the only female lead in the movie is to basically stop being so career focused, let her hair down & let the man screw some life into her. Chris Pratt's storyline in the movie is to just be Chris Pratt & everything will work out for him in the end. Which it kinda does. He doesn't really do anything to win over Bryce Dallas Howard but she falls for him anyway & they both get to live happily ever after until Jurassic Park 5 even though they're both 100% responsible for the death & destruction caused at the park.

Either way I find Jurassic World to be a bad movie in total but that's another discussion. Back to GB.

Yes, Ghostbusters was dormant for quite some time. And there are a few reasons for that. One of the most important being that Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ivan Reitman held a certain amount of control over the property. Which is unusual for most franchises. Anyway, they were content with letting Ghostbusters rest and it was a struggle for Paramount Pictures to even convince them to do Ghostbusters II. Nevertheless, the franchise had deeply rooted itself into popular culture. Nowhere near as big as Star Wars. Sure. But its popularity is nothing to be scoffed at. Who ya gonna call?

Onto The Force Awakens. Let's not forget that Episode 7 is a sequel to the Original Trilogy. So yeah, using the original cast for promotional purposes made plenty of sense. Although the Prequels were ignored, Disney or the media didn't explicitly deride them. Speaking of sequels, do you know what most Ghostbusters fans wanted? Ghostbusters 3. Or at least some form of continuity with the two original films. And you know what they were going to get before Amy Pascal and Paul Feig took over? What they wanted. But making a total reboot, alienating the fanbase, attacking the original films, and depending on the original cast to promote your film is a mess of marketing.

Yeah. Some mean people made mean comments on the internet. You know what Disney didn't let happen? They didn't let that minor sentiment dominate the discussion. At least not for long. There was never a risk of getting a hateful label thrown your way for not supporting the film. The hostility was acknowledged and afterwards largely forgotten. People were swept up in the excitement about what mattered. For the first time in ten years there was a new Star Wars film. And that is the point I was trying to make. Besides, even much smaller franchises can achieve major success. Just look at the hype that surrounded Godzilla(2014) leading up to release. Before it turned out to be mediocre and squandered its goodwill.

So you're telling me Jurassic Park had an entire island worth of victims trapped in a futuristic park, subplot about domesticating and militarizing raptors, and a bio-engineered nightmare roaming around slaughtering other dinosaurs for sport? Maybe it's time for another watch. Don't remember any of this. Also, here's another perspective on the alleged sexism of Jurassic World.

I'm seeing a lot of chatter in here that's not actually about Ghostbusters in any particularly relevant way. For what I hope is the last time: this thread is about the GB reboot. This means it's NOT about some elaborate conspiracy going on between Hollywood, the traditional media, and social media... or anything along those lines. Further off-topic posts will be unceremoniously graveyarded and those responsible will be given warnings.

The Ghostbusters remake has the blessing of the entire Ghostbusters cast, who all make cameo appearances in the film. Harold Ramis was working on the film as well: this was originally Ghostbusters 3 but was converted into a reboot when Harold Ramis passed away ( it was seen as a more respectful way to handle the property in light of the fact that he could no longer work on it). The only reason that this film seems to be getting as much of the vitriol that it's getting is the fact that it's got an all-female cast of leads; even though it's a remake, and were all sick to death of remakes, no other remake has gotten this amount of hate.

It sounds fun. I can't say that it is either way because I haven't seen it yet. Holtzman looks like she's about as adorable as a basket full of kittens, though, so that's enough of a reason for me to go see it.

So I saw this and it's alright, not great but it's not terrible either. The internet sure is serious business losing it so hard over something like this years before it was even out.

I saw this live and it was pretty bad but, she really shouldn't have engaged with obvious trolls that are looking to get a rise out of her. She was also kind of a huge racist herself so it's essentially racist picking on a racist. meh

If anything I think they should have targeted Paul Feig at least it would have made more sense.

Please provide evidence that Leslie Jones was a racist that didn't start on 4chan or the usual GG friendly message board. All the racist tweets that made the rounds with the usual mouthbreathing fuckers were photoshopped images made by the same trolls who think rape & that alt-right Milo sociopath are "funny". I had the pleasure of meeting Leslie Jones once & if she's a racist then she may very well be the best actress on the planet.

If anything these same friendless troglodytes should never attack anyone because abuse is abuse. It's not a game. And of course 99% of online abuse comes from the same vicious trolls who yell & pontificate about how "there is no such thing as a safe space" & yet their entire presence online is hidden by anime avatars & elaborate artificial personalities to afford them complete anonymity. That's the troll communities greatest strength. Their unity in their cowardice.

The trolls are in the wrong. The trolls are always in the wrong because they go about things in the worst ways possible.

Again, no Photoshop needed just browsing her twitter account. Also, as if meeting her once gives you enough insight into her person. I could also point out how the majority of roles she plays are basically one big racial stereotype along with other black actors like Kevin Hart and Chris Tucker it's all racist as hell.

This is just my opinion but if internet abuse from a bunch of no name shits is enough to get you to leave any kind of social media then you probably don't belong there in the first place. Also, considering twitter has a block function it might have been in her best interest to use it.

I know I use it all the time for trolls and porn bots on twitter.

Love how you bring in GG for no freaking reason.

Ghostbusters looking at 70-80 million dollar box office loss, sequel unlikely?
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/g ... uel-918515

on one hand I'm glad the audience didn't reward Paul Feig and Sony for insulting them by giving them all their money. on the other hand though this is sad.

I see nothing sad about this. Sony dug its own grave by doubling down on their own home-cooked controversy and losing.

I for one just hope that Hollywood just stops trying to remake iconic films that were objectively great in the first place. I hate the idea of a Ghostbusters remake as equally as I do remakes of:

-Total Recall
-Robocop
-The Magnificent Seven
-The Karate Kid
-The Evil Dead
-Carrie
-BEN FUCKING HUR

I don't care about the fact that the main cast are women. I do care about the fact that studios exploit these properties for profit and retaining licensing rights without giving a shit about the fandom. Though given the fact that not one of these remakes has made enough money or received enough critical success to warrant a sequel feels like they're simply there to retain the rights. It's fucking disheartening and shameful.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996
