While my opinion is more positive than it originally was, I still think it's a very flawed movie and I have trouble calling it "good." It's going to be hard for 4.0 to redeem the series, but not impossible. (I did love 2.0.)

I think that's true for everything, not just Eva. People constantly change their minds. The magic is that it remains relevant for some people well beyond the ordinary time frame you think about movies.

I can appreciate an Eva project that defines itself as a new thing without heavily leaning on the original, however it resulted as something confused and overly erratic. It doesn't necessarily bother me though, Evangelion has never exactly been the easiest thing to digest as a whole, and in terms of visual presentation and animation it's my all-time favourite of the franchise (save EoE).
I do love me some Rei guns.

Once again, both iterations of Anno's Eva just might not be for you, then. He kind of always happens to go down that road, in NTE less so than in EoE/NGE, though.

robersora has a way with words that I really appreciate :nyao:.

The concept of sidelining plot in favor of themes isn't something that I've thought much about as it pertains to Eva. I attribute that to being unfamiliar with Anno's other works. I'll get around to watching Nadia or Gunbuster eventually. And while I do consume a fair bit of media in general, I've never cared enough to try and analyze them until Eva.

If I go back and look at EoTV & EoE again though, that concept really seems rather obvious. EoTV was practically 2 episodes of "Jesus Christ WTF is going on" and One More Final requires you to divorce the plot from the themes if you're trying to reach a conclusion that isn't complete empty sadness. It's a little funny to think entertain the idea that the first thing anybody in their right mind should do after reforming is to track down Shinji and kill him for ending humanity and all .

I don't think he's as heavy handed on the concept in Q as he has been in the original version. Most of the things we're confused about are untold to us rather than being handwaved away. Anno might not go into details about the events of the 14 year timeskip or the overarching plot, but we'll probably be able to piece together what happened with supplemental materials (games, interviews, etc.). The same thing happened with the original series I believe.

ANYWAY, finally on to the topic, I do think a large number of people are definitely still sour on Q based on the recent reactions I see on the reddit and other forms of discussion that have replaced forums in the past decade. Hell even on evageeks I still see threads from as early as 2018 that hate on Q and the rebuilds in general.

Go back to 09, and you'll see a fair bit of negative reaction to Ha as well -- like thread/11561/Debate-the-quality-of-Rebuild-here-1/ and its sequel.

I think the general audience has warmed up to the movie over the years, but if Final manages to tie things up and make a satisfying conclusion (Conclusion that fits Eva), then Q will be seen in a much better light.

I think Evangelion 3.33 shocked a lot of viewers when the story jumps 14 years into the future and everyone seems to have changed their appearance and personality. This has got to be one of the messiest deviations in the Evangelion franchise since episode 26. Looking back on it, the opener was a spectacle and I thought the fight scene was a confusing but breath-taking opener for the movie. But things just go from worse to worse for Shinji as the plot unravels, especially when he finds out he is responsible for devastating the planet, and I can't but feel bad for how the story turned out for him. There was some great action sequences at the end and I thought it was quite artistic how Anno doesn't give a shit about explaining what is going on but left everything abstract. Overall, I liked watching the movie but the plot has too many loose ends. I guess there's still hope for the main protagonists as they wander around that desert in the end.

second off, yea 3.33 was kinda lame, but only cause the rebuilds are anno "rebuilding" evangelion as a traditional anime with traditional tropes and a more satisfying plot, unlike nge and eoe, which were anno putting his experiences and depression into an atypically formatted mecha show for mass consumption of his psyche.

For me, the film became good when Shinji returned to NERV.
I was very disappointed in everything before that, especially as Misato has always been my favourite character.
The cold and uncaring person she became was hard to take in.
The way she was blanking him and treating him like a prisoner was just horrible.

I understand that she's been through a lot, but she can't seriously believe that Shinji knew what would result from saving Rei.
He's a kid who doesn't understand how impacts work.
Misato clearly didn't know either as she was cheering him on.

I just hope she regrows a heart in the next film and remembers that she has a lot of love for Shinji.
After all, she's partially responsible for the near 4th impact for pushing Shinji right back to Gendo.

I forget, did you happen to watch 3.0 in English? The dub, for whatever reason, has her growl out "Shinji!" when Fourth Impact's halted/Kaworu stops things from getting worse, while Mitsuishi's performance in Japanese offers a quiet and obviously concerned "Shinji-kun...." instead.

3.0's script directly comments along the lines of "Misato, wanting to believe in Shinji" regarding her concerned delivery.

Although I'd taken that from the delivery, I hadn't realised that it's written explicitly in the script - that's a useful thing to be able to tell doubters.

Magmadiver tangent:

I synthesized people's gripes with the episode in an video (here if you haven't seen it). I took some data from fans and the episode was the bottom of the list, both in terms of it being liked the least, and hated the most.

I can't find it right now, but AnnoCinema has done some breakdowns of editing and shot composition of various episodes, and I recall him getting to Magmadiver and being like "man, even the visual composition in this lazy/awful".

^ Within terms of the technical aspects of that episode, I do remember Episode 10 feeling the least like a true Eva installment and feeling more like a “normal” 90’s anime.

I've never had an issue with Magmadiver, but it isn't a favourite either.
About the visuals, it's interesting to note it's one of the episodes Anno storyboarded, though not alone. I remember there being an instance of the 180° rule intentionally being broken.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
