Sorry, I was thinking of the outbox as it showed a message I sent. I'm not even sure the person got it. Again this whole switch was a very bad idea.

Since I stayed logged in the whole of yesterday (three browser restarts) but was logged out this night (me sleeping and computer sleeping with browser open), next night will show whether it's actually fixed... ^_^

Easy, easy. Take it one day at a time. All the functionality is there, we just need to get used to the new interface. Have faith in Monk Ed and Paul, eh? They know what's going on and what issues remain, so give them a chance to polish things up and make the site look like it ought.

I had that using the temporary URL a few minutes ago; using the old URL which has now propagated fixed it for me.

The reason for the logout problem is that when the DNS change propagated and forum.evageeks.org finally pointed to my server, people were logging into the site via forum.evageeks.org but the cookie settings still had us as egforum.cassland.org . Just updating those settings was all it took. Those who were not having a problem were probably still visiting the site via the cassland link. Furthermore, those who visit the site using the cassland link now (at least until pwhodges kills it) will start encountering the perpetual logout problem.

In fact, for the duration that the cassland link still works, you can even open forum.evageeks.org in one tab and see yourself logged in and open egforum.cassland.org in another and see yourself not logged in.

Can I make a request?

TV tropes has a switch to turn the white background black and the black text white to make it hurt your eyes less. I do most of my posting at night so it would be welcome.

I like reverse colours (see the QuestionableContent forum which I designed four years back!); but it will take a while. The number of colours to be changed is non-trivial, and images need to change to match - in effect it's a whole new theme. But first I want to create a mechanism for the selection in the way you describe - I would then use that to select width and banner preferences, for instance, without multiplying similar themes. Not this month, though.

The problem of multiple #postnumber citations being appended together (e.g. "Monk Ed#876543" becoming "Monk Ed#876543#876543") should be solved now. The culprit was my code not accounting for refreshes, so it duplicated its functionality upon every press of preview or when you were notified of a topic changing during the composition or editing of a post. On the bright side it's easy to tell who during this brief period did lots of previewing! (Or took long enough for the topic to change several times under their feet.)

This was something that didn't need to happen. How could the code be that bad? ANN has a similar forum (at least on the surface), and they're still functioning. Why couldn't we have used that version? Ed and Paul are good people, but I think they have failed and should own up to it.

"This" being a working forum using maintainable software and providing more functionality than before in a similar interface, I take it.

How could the code be that bad?

Obviously you are not a programmer, or you wouldn't have considered saying that.

ANN has a similar forum (at least on the surface), and they're still functioning.

QuestionableContent has a totally different forum (that I re-engineered), and they're still functioning. Your point?

Why couldn't we have used that version?

I can't get these pencil leads to work in this fountain pen - sorry.

I think they have failed and should own up to it.

We own up to the fact that conversing like this remains possible in spite of having to rebuild the system from the base up.

You're being needlessly harsh, here. I get that you don't like the change but you really need to understand that this had to happen. The old software was a hodge-podge of work that was only kept running due to Ornette's expertise, and it was housed on a server that was paid for through November of this year. If Monk and Paul hadn't made the changes they did the forums would be gone. Continuing as we were was simply not an option. It was not a matter of choice on their part -- our options were this or nothing.

Also remember that this is a work in progress, and that the people working on it are not being paid for their time or expertise. They are doing this as a favor to us, the community, on their own time. Please give them a bit of patience and consideration as they work out the kinks here and restore the site's functionality and aesthetics to the extent they are able.

Love the mobile version, much better than before. It's actually fun using it on a phone, instead of a hassle.

Also, Cy - please try staying constructive, and most importantly respectfull. Pwhodges and Monk put a lot of effort into this for free. If it was not for them, this place might had to be abandoned sooner or later. I':ll take some initial hiccups over the end of this community everyday.

I know! This was a bennie I didn't even realize would come with the upgrade, and it's especially a boon for me because it enables me to more easily check on the site when I'm away from a proper computer.

...

I mean obviously that's true for everyone but I help run the place.

Dude. Chill. You're being rude and demanding as heck about a volunteer-run internet forum. Have some understanding and accept that everyone isn't pulling your leg when they say this was something that needed to be done, and that moaning about how much of a failure you think it is isn't going to make anyone change their mind about that.

I think that's possibly because the forum and wiki are currently on two servers, and have different certificates using the same name (*.evageeks.org). Both are self-signed, and so need to be accepted or imported on your machine to be completely free of prompting. However, both are also not adequate for long-term use, as they allow protocols that browsers will block completely in a year's time (it seems the defaults in OpenSSL haven't been brought up to current standards yet). So I'm afraid there will be another certificate update to come - probably when all parts of Evageeks are together on the same server again.
