Bleach.

Seriously, though. Watch Revolutionary Girl Utena. It's Evangelion with magical girls instead of giant robutt men.

I would highly recommend this.

Although it's a book, not a movie, and would indeed be impossible to faithfully replicate with modern film technology.

Watchmen. Preferably the graphic novel, though the movie isn't completely terrible. It's probably the closest American equivalent.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Captain Earth is really good and similar to Evangelion in a lot of ways.

I would like to second this, Watchmen is to comics as Evangelion is to anime.

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure is a parody of Evangelion (and several other things, but Eva and Tenchi Muyo! are the two strongest influences.)

It's fun to watch for that reason alone.

Building upon Evangelion's exploration of the loner mentality, I'd quite honestly say that Yahari Ore no Seishun Rabu Kome wa Machigatteiru (or Oregairu), has done the best job of it I've seen thus far.

Hachiman is by no means Shinji, but they do act out from a similar premise. They feel that they must keep to themselves in order to not trouble others. Their respective series then goes to great lengths to show them that while this mentality seems to work, it doesn't actually give them what they wish for.

"It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

How come nobody has mentioned the trifecta of Devil Man, Space Runaway Ideon and Nadia?
OK, Nadia not so much, but still...

To the thread opener: if you are up for a bad rip-off, Nadesico would fit the bill.

Nadesico may be a bad ripoff of Evangelion if considered so in isolation; but it pokes fun at a whole lot more than that, and does it very well overall.
