Just revealed today: The secret new JRPG square was hinting at is Star Ocean 5!!!

http://www.jp.square-enix.com/so5/

I absolutely love the Star Ocean series, so I am really hyped about this! So far all I've been able to learn is that it takes place in between Star Ocean 2 and 3, and it will be on both the PS3 and PS4. Can't wait to get more info!

Man, JRPGs really prepare they comeback, aren't they? Star Ocean, Persona, Final Fantasy...
I've played Star Ocean 3 and had a blast back then. I wasn't that good in English back then, so I would sit with a dictionary in front of the screen and look up all the words I didn't know... Fond memories.

Makes me really consider to buy a PS4. then again, I also would have to buy a TV, which I actually don't need. Meh, I'll wait until those games drop and decide then.

Amazing news. I am so excited that after 6 years we are getting Star Ocean 5. Curious to see if the West will get the PS3 version. Dragon Quest Heroes was released in Japan for PS3 and PS4 but Square Enix said that they will bring only the PS4 version in the West.

Like Robersora i don't have a PS4 (yet) and i am waiting for the right moment (slim version).

Yeah, it's almost like S-E is trying to make up for last gen.

I have a theory that we may be getting SO5 as early as Q4 of next year. Here are the reasons I think so:

SO5 is cross-gen. If a console based on 2006's computer technology can handle the game, it probably isn't very graphics-intensive. This means it will take less time and resources to make it compared to something like FFXV.

2016 will be the third year of gen 8 (yes, already.) If the industry is going to return to 5-year hardware cycles, they should announce their next consoles towards the end of 2017. It would seem strange for PS3 games to still be in production shortly before the PS5 is announced.

So I could be wrong, but I believe we'll be getting this somewhere from Q4 2016 to Q2 2017.

Apparently the creators are trying to recapture the essence of SO3: 'Till the End of Time, which is quite exciting because I really adore that game. The Last Hope was a good game as well, but there were a lot of elements lacking. I can't wait. :D

This is why I made sure to get a ps4 at launch, it was a future investment cuz I knew that these games would coming out soon. I believe Square has said that there would be more jrpg announcements for the ps4 in 2015, or something to that effect.

It's not so simple. It's true that by Fall 2016 the Gen 8 will be in the third year. Next gen consoles are usually getting announced after 5 years. Announced and not released. So it's very possible that until 2018 neither Sony or M$ will talk about next gen.

Also nobody can guarantee that this gen will last only 5 years. Sure i don't see it lasting like PS3 or 360 but i can definitely see it lasting 6+ years.

My personal estimate is that Sony will announce PS5 in early 2019 and release it in the same year, similar to what happened with PS4. There is a small possibility M$ will go kamikazi and announce a new console in 2017/2018 if Xbone continues to underperform, in order to catch Sony by surprise.

Regarding Star Ocean 5.... there is not a chance this will get released in Fall 2016. It will probably release in Japan, Fall 2015 or Early 2016, with a west release shortly after.

Actually Fall of 2016 will be the end of the third year. Fall 2013-Fall 2014= year 1, Fall 2014-Fall 2015= year 2, Fall 2015-Fall 2016= year 3.

You could be right about that (and I hope you are.) After making that post I read on Gamefaqs that the game has been in development since 2013 (source was unconfirmed).

I'm a pretty big Star Ocean fan ever since I played 2, so this is awesome news. Guess it's more proof that I picked a great time to buy a PS4 when I got it last month

With how SE has really turned around and been pumping out great stuff that past two years (FF14 relaunch, FF15 demo) I'm sure it will be great.

Nope, it's the contrary. Fall 2016 is the start of the third year. For example in summer 2017 we will be saying ''3 and a half years have passed since PS4 launched''. So Fall 2016 isn't the end, its the beginning.

Source is Famitsu, the magazine that revealed the game and had an interview with the producer. Pre-production started in Autumn 2013 so i suspect the full production started around summer or Autumn 2014.

...How do they count the years then? The PS4 was launched November 15, 2013 in the US. November 16, 2014 would have been the beginning of the second year. November 16, 2015 will be the beginning of the third year, at least by the 365-day year calendar.

*EDIT* Gamespot seems to agree.

*does math*

No, IronEvangelion's right. If the number of years elapsed is between 3 and 4, that is the 4th year. You always round up; we don't call the first year the "0th year", we call it the "1st year" even though the time elapsed is less than 1 year. Year 1 covers 0 to 1 years elapsed, Year 2 covers 1 to 2 years elapsed, etc. Fall 2016 - Fall 2013 = 3, so that would be the end of the 3rd year and the start of the 4th. In summer 2017 we will indeed be saying "3 and a half years have passed since PS4 launched" and we will be saying it in the 4th year of the PS4.

No.

If by Summer 2017 we will be saying that ''3 and half years have passed since the PS4 launched'' then how in the world is Fall 2016 the end of the third year? Another example.

Fall 2013-Fall 2014 = 1 year
Fall 2014-Fall 2015 = 2 year
Fall 2015-Summer 2016 = 2 and half years

So how from 2 and a half years we are going to end of the third year in 6 months?

Fall 2016 we are completing 3 full years and we start counting

Jan 2017 = 3 years and one month
Feb 2017 = 3 years and two months
Mar 2017 = 3 years and three months

etc.

Saying Fall 2016 is the end of the third year makes 0 sense. The end of third year is just before the fourth year starts which is Fall 2017.

Consider the following:

Jan 2014 = 0 years and one month
Feb 2014 = 0 years and two months
Mar 2014 = 0 years and three months

What would you call the year covering these dates? The "?th" year of the PS4 -- what number would you put in for "?"?

We are now in the third year of the console's life span, but two years (and a few months) have passed.

EDIT: I'm obviously as bad at simple calculations as a toddler. I somehow thought, that the PS4 had launched back in 2012. Yes, so we are in the second year of the console's life span, but one and a half year has passed since they were released.

PS4 and Xbone launched 18 months ago. This translates to 3 years of a console's life span?

Two years and a few months? so 24+ months? But PS4 and Xbone launched in Nov 2013. So 18 months ago as i said before.

That main character really takes cues from Fayt Leingod alright.
