Split off from "Lance of Longinus" (!!) in "Eva Discussion". --Reichu

Reichu wrote:Then, as I often rant, the Classified Information was fully translated, and, unlike most of the other new stuff, the new details on the Spear made absolutely no sense of its presence in the show and just threw a whole 'nother layer of knots onto the object. Yes! That's exactly like when Nomura and company made collective asses of themselves, trying to explain (and expand upon) FFVII. *Shiver* This makes for a very good reason to be skeptical to Anno and friends return to Eva.

Yeah, that was my first thought too when I heard about the new Eva anime, "Please let this not be like FF7:Advent Children." Then again, I think Gainax has been more consistent over the past decade in terms of it's goals as a company then Square/Sqeenix has, so I like to think that there's still hope.

This is a bit of elitist snobbery here, but it bugs me now that there are now fifteen year olds walking around who think that Cloud Strife is one cool badass, but they have no idea what the original game was actually about or what was so good about it. I would hate for something like that to happen with Eva.

I'm just trusting what the guys are saying in here.

@ Karen
Actually, I always considered Cloud the ultimate badass, what with 4x-Cut, Omnislash, 9999 damage and everything. So I was more upset to see him being so pathetic in AC. I waited what, 6 years? To see Cloud kick some ass again, and the first thing he does is to get himself humiliated by some generic Nomura-flavoured white-haired pansies. I knew the guy was emotionally unstable, but the guy is a bit too Shinji here.
I guess you get this image of the guy when you play the american translation at the age of 15.

Oh, I think Cloud is cool too :), but I thought what made FF7 special from so many other games was that there really was some deeper meaning and poignancy in there...and AC was a glorified tech demo, and now that's the image people have of FF7. But I guess we're off topic

About those production sketches/screenshots etc., this is all that stuff that's flashed really fast during various eps and you need to slow your DVD player way the hell down to even see it, right? Y'know, I think there's something interesting to be said about Eva being made for the DVD era because getting meaning out of those quickly flashing frames would be nigh impossible on VHS, but...I'm not sure what it is. There's something interesting to be said there though, maybe it'll come to me

People call Cloud Strife a badass?

News to me.

Fainting at completely random intervals when the BIG BAD VILLAIN DUDE is around is totally badass, d00d!

But really, I found FF7's plot to be ridiculously shallow and the characters to be inconsistent, along with faulty gameplay.

But that's just me.

Ditto.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, now that was a game.

Alucard IS the ultimate badass.

These are much different circumstances. I was your age, but at that point I had never even seen an RPG before. Faults aside, it was much more intricate than anything I had ever seen.

Times and circumstances, ya know. However great, pick an N64 game up today for the first time ever and the graphics are sure to scare you off. Or PSX, did that console ever look terrible?

Anywho, as for Cloud, no matter how much he whined and fainted, it was his acts of violence we remember most vividly. Omnislash was pretty great to a whole target audience who had never heard of Dragonball (or the likes) before.

I heartily endorse this post, SotN is fucking brilliant.

Great soundtrack too.

My problem with every character on FF7 (leaving aside the fact that I hate the game's gameplay) is that they feel like a bunch of anime clichés thrown together, any attempt at depth followed a stereotypical path (OH MY GOD! THEY KILLED AERIS! YOU BASTARDS!) and only made the characters' personalities more unrealistic and less likeable.

Hell, I can take Shinji's whining because it actually seems somewhat human-like, but Cloud's "I FAINT BECAUSE THE BAD GUY IS EVIL" made absolutely no sense and made the character ridiculous.

Back @ Maggotmaster again;

In 1998, I had seen exactly two animes 'Akira' and 'Ghost in the Shell'. And that was more than most of my peers. So FFVII became pretty much our first encounter with Japanese storytelling. Plotholes be damned; it was extremely enjoyable, captivating and thought-provoking. With AC to look back on, we now know it's greatness lied mostly in our own experience and perception of it, not the production values. But nostalgia's nice.

Yeah, SotN is the absolute shiznit. Lost my copy somewhere, tho :(

Yes, however, my main problem with the game is not it's (IMO sloppy) storytelling, but the gameplay itself, seeing how characters contain very few unique traits (Besides their limit breaks, every character is pretty much the same) and how little strategy you have to use in battle.

Then again, Final Fantasy games were never too hard (FF6 comes to mind), but the fact that FF7 has UBER SUPERHARD BOSSES with around 1 million HP that can be EASILY overpowered (No, seriously, those things weren't difficult at all) speaks against it.

Oh, and Advent Children is a horrible movie despite looking cool.

Mine was Secret of Mana. I never finished it, though; the first four hours seemed like they were being pretty reflective of the gameplay in the remaining god-knows-how-many, so being satisfied with the feel I had gotten for it, I quit.

My first RPG was Wild Arms on the PS1 really awesome game. I really enjoyed FF7 and don't have a problem with it, it was an enjoyable game and even though it is cliche'd it was still fun.

I blame the three lame new villains with the funny names. And those battle sequences that were way too long and off-the-wall.

But, for some strange reason, I want to see it again--!!

First RPG was Secret of Mana (known to the 1337 as Seiken Densetsu 2), like Hex. Unlike Hex, I went all the way and beat the shit out of the Mana Beast. Later, against my tendencies, I rented Final Fantasy III :cough:VI!:cough: because the Amano artwork in Nintendo Power was cool-looking. That was fun, even though I never beat that Kefka fruit.

FFVII has a special place in my heart, though.

Kefka is an awesome villain just because he's so fruity and over the top, I mean, seriously, look at him!

Nobody is denying that, but you have to admit Supernova makes ALL of Galamoth's moves a candyland.

Plus it didn't take Galamoth ten minutes to kill you.
