Already almost a week into the new year but I thought it would be cool to see what EGF users liked in movies for 2014. To start things off, my top five:

I agree with this entire list, except I'd switch out Godzilla with Guardians of the Galaxy.

Edge of Tomorrow (I have some major quibbles with this chap, but nonetheless it was mostly enjoyable)

Interstellar absolutely makes my list, along with Captain America: Winter Soldier. That film was pretty great. I saw a few other films during the year, but nothing that I'd call a best film of 2014.
Shin Evangelion brought me back, five long years later.

I haven't been to the movie theater since... Lincoln, I think. Or possibly the first Hobbit. But I saw Lincoln twice, I'm pretty sure. Probably had the opposite of the intended effect. And my opinion of the Hobbit dropped pretty quickly.
But yes, I haven't been to the movie theater in more than two years.
And I haven't actually read a book (save for a school textbook, Hamlet for the second or third or maybe fourth time is under that banner; reading the whole of Walden may or may not count since it was supererogatory) in years either. I think the last one was La Vita Nuova? But that was on my computer, and it's very short. And I don't know when that was in relation to Walden.

10. Gone Girl - Loved this movie as both a David Fincher fan and a regular movie goer. Rosamund Pike killed it and it was one of the most intense experiences I had in the theater last year.
9. Into The Woods - I liked this movie more then most people did, though I love me a good musical so that might explain why. Great music, great look, just great overall.
8. The Grand Budapest Hotel - It's Wes Anderson's best film that isn't Fantastic Mr. Fox and is overall the best looking film I've seen in a long time. It's also unbelievably charming and quirky.
7. X-Men Days of Future Past - The X-Men are back, and back in style! This was probably the best adaptation of the storyline that could have done, and it sets the gates open for a complete overhaul of the franchise.
6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - A prime example of how a sequel should be done: evolve the series and don't conform to things that the previous films did. It's also smart as hell and those fight scenes... oh man.
5. Edge of Tomorrow - The surprise of the year. Despite some awful marketing, this movie is not only fun as hell, but cleverly written and respects the original source material.
4. Boyhood - A lot of people are saying that this film is overrated, and while I agree that it has it's faults, I cannot deny the overall scope and groundbreaking achievement in filmmaking this film is.
3. Whiplash - You thought Gone Girl was intense? Think again, cause J.K. Simmons is gonna make you crap your pants in fear. The best performance of the year along with by far the best editing I've seen in years is what elevates this film.
2. The Lego Movie - I kept arguing with myself on whether this or my eventual #1 would be #1. As a whole, The Lego Movie is the most unexpectedly funny, heartwarming and overall great animated film that was unfairly snubbed at the Oscars. It's also wonderfully animated, and I cannot wait for the sequel.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy - A lot of you already have this on your lists, and with good reason. The reason why Guardians is #1 is because unlike most of the films this year, this film MET my unreasonably high expectations. Most of the films on this list are from directors I like or surprises that came out of nowhere. However, Guardians is the SOLE film from last year that I can think of that met my hype, and it possibly even exceeded it. It's by far and above the best film of last year.

The Lego Movie, The Babadook and Gone Girl are easy picks for me. I would've callled Birdman my favorite movie of that year if you've talked to me then, but my love has dwindled down.

Why so, if you don't mind me asking? Birdman is still my favorite of 2014 by a long-shot, probably one of my favorite of recent films in general. Interstellar is to me what it sounds like Birdman is to you, actually.
Whiplash was also a phenomenal film, but unfortunately me and my fellow jazz drummer buddies have turned many lines and moments from from it into inside jokes. It's gotten to the point where now I can't watch the "rushing or dragging" scene without laughing at least once. I hate myself for what I've done to that genuinely great movie.

I loved almost everything about Birdman when I first saw it: the story, the characters, how it immersed me in it's world with it cinematography and one of the best casts of the decade. Now, while I still think it's a great movie, I see it more as Innaratu's piss take towards everyone bigger then him. He has stated many times that he hates superhero movies and there's a long feud between Riggan and a theater critic. I was thinking about this more, and it increased when I saw the Revenant; a film that huge in scope...but in the end, felt rather pointless. Innaratu just seems like someone who's ego takes over his projects.
However, I still stand that the performances in Birdman are some of the best decade. Michael Keaton got a well-deserved comeback, Emma Stone was fantastic, and Edward Norton shown himself to continue to be one of my favorite actors.

Fair enough--although I disagree with your take on Inarritu, as I thought the Revenant was also a great film, and far from pointless. I also disagree with your interpretation on Birdman, in that regard. I think the messages and ideas presented in that film are much more universal in nature rather than being constrained to the world of film and criticisms therein.
Ah well. Different strokes, I guess.
