Is there a point to watching the non Directors Cut episodes?
My boyfriend wants to watch Evangelion right now, so I'm downloading a copy of the show that has both the DC and non DC episodes. Is there any point to watching the non-DC episodes?

As far as I can recall, the only thing worth seeing is the different depiction of the Eva graveyard in episode 23.
With that said, you might want to not mention how you get your Eva. The mods might take issue with it.

You get the original story, without the retcons.

Could you give some examples to what the retcons are?

And there's also this strange conversation between Kaworu and Seele on the lake, which kinda contadicts with every other scene (the number of monoliths and the Gendou-Adam bromance are kinda wrong).
You could say, the original Episodes lead up to the original ending, while the DCs lead up to EoE.

Technically speaking the DC episodes are of higher visual quality and add several additional scenes, so if you're only going to watch one that's probably the best choice. It's not my personally preferred choice, mind you, but it gets you the most for your time overall and puts you on the same page with the majority of other viewers.
If you care to dig deeper however I strongly suggest watching the original 21-26 first, then the DC episodes and EoE to compare and contrast them. Come to your own conclusions regarding the whole concurrency issue rather than reading what others think, then report back to us.

Renewal or Platinum (ADV's release, no Death or EoE) isn't going to proper OA episodes either way, just for reference's sake. Example using Episode 22 from our wiki: http://wiki.evageeks.org/Guides:Episode_22_OA_vs._DC
As usual for the Renewal OA episodes, very little of the actual OA footage remains intact; in most cases, it is replaced with the revised DC equivalents (exceptions will be noted below).

Whether you watch the OA episodes depends largely on the sort of person your boyfriend is and why he wants to watch NGE. If your boyfriend was the kind of person who was hardcore about experiencing a series in the "purest" manner possible, e.g, in its chronological order of release, I doubt you would even need to ask the forum any questions about this.
A newcomer will most likely have no use for watching four episodes effectively twice. And you have to consider modern attention spans, too. Good luck getting someone to watch a redundancy-free version of the show all the way through. Unless you plan on stopping with EoTV -- which I doubt -- go with DC. No other choice makes much sense.
(I wish I could have been as well-prepared for EoE back in the day, but, alas, there were no DC episodes available to poor gaikokujin.)

The girl who introduced me to the series went right to the DC eps when we were watching 21-24. When I asked about why, she said something along the lines that it added more to the story and yet are too similar to watch both versions.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

Watch them both. It's good to see what was originally aired, and then to see what was added to flesh out the story. Assuming that you're a non-congruency theorist, the DC episodes lead up to EoE and the OA episodes lead up to EoTV.

I watched EOE in 1999 (I don't remember well) and I have no problem, but i was thankful to DC because it added info. I never thought it changed anything, because it doesn´t
Funny thing it's until the release of the new boxsets, only a few (and veteran)ones have watched the true OA, because Renewal/Platinum OA is just a bastardized Frankenstein made from DC. His role nowadays it's just an historical curiosity.
An Death (True) can live without the new material. The main point of that movie is how it's edited.

Although it seems to be implied that the new remastering will work from older originals of the OA episodes rather than using the Renewal patchwork, is this actually unambiguously known?

Wish either of our posts on this matter wouldn't be ignored. As far as I know, it's assumed OA episodes will be the originals, since the DVD box set is making a point to include Death (True) while the BD box will include both original Death and Death (True)2... I guess, again, splitting things up this way (some cool content only in the BD boxset vs content only in the DVD boxset) is just them making more .

Moved the more nitpicky argument to the thread linked earlier by Mr. Tines.

If the upcoming BD Boxset of NGE 'll have the OA Episodes in their purest unedited form, then I want the DC Episodes in the Renewal Version combined with the material from the Pre-Renewal Version (Flashing of "SEX" in the beginning and the flashing of "I HATE" in the end of the Asuka Mindfuck-Scene in Ep.22 and the inserted pictures in the Reiquarium-Scene from Ep.23).
I dont think it wouldn't be difficult to insert this little footage in the Renewal Versions, then it would be the definite version of the DC Episodes.

I carry out things right to the end. No. Matter. What.
