Thanks, Paul.

Hmmm. That analysis is a bit simplistic in my mind; 1.0 isn't a shot for shot remake of NGE, as there are a lot of subtle (and meaningful) differences throughout. 2.0 isn't just fan expectations, and they're rather brutally subverted at the end. And 3.0 isn't just NGE's themes intensified, as Anno's saying a lot of interesting stuff about Asuka and Mari and ReiQ. The analysis works on a superficial level, and is certainly plausible in its way, but I think it overlooks a lot of what's going on in the movies. But even so it's not a terrible idea, and it's nice to see some original thought on the subject. It'll be interesting to revisit the idea once Final comes out.

Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

I think the title is just a fancy way of titling the end of the series while also signifying that it picks up where it left off. Which maybe is still a relict from the original plan to make the final two instalments one movie.
Proof for my thesis: The storyboards meshed into Shiro Sagisu's music video from one year ago.

The poster on 4chan clearly hasn't seen X-Men 1.5 or Spider-Man 2.5, which were extended or redited verions of X-Men and Spider-Man 2. These titles have been used before in standard sequels.

It's definitely an interesting way of explaining the titles. I don't know how accurate it is per se, but it's certainly a take on it that I've not seen explored before.

It could simply be that the X.0 numbering was to make it look more modern, since that kind of numbering (inspired by the numbering of software versions in informatics) is the trend lately.

That or Anno planned the enhanced 1.01, 1.11... since the beginning, which is also very probable! :D

I honestly think the numbering was inspired from the episode numbering from Kare Kano. And most television anime plans for alterations and cleaned-up animations for the home video release, and the NTE films seem to be adopting the same production methods that comes with TV animation instead of feature-length film animation, what with Anno being credited as "General Director" rather than simply as "Director."

Has anyone brought up the idea, that Shin might be comprised of two movies, kinda like EoE? And since the English titles of Jo and Q have basically been renamed into 1.11 and 3.33 at this point, that might explain, why it's not 4.0 + 5.0. So he the title still signifies it's 4.0 (since 3+1 is 4), but also that both entries/episodes combined amount to 4.0.

I’m not sure of anyone has speculated a two-in-one movie as of yet. Most of what I hear when it comes to speculation of another movie is that “4.0” will come after 3.0+1.0; two different movies, two different release dates. If anything the idea of a two-in-one film a la EoE is certainly interesting and more fitting given its title and all. But there wouldn’t be the same reasoning behind the two-parter like there was for EoE, which was a re-telling/possible alteration of the last two episodes of NGE.

If Eva Shin is a two-parter, then maybe it’ll finally utilize that mid-movie title card to make that two-part split more apparent while also making it more consistent with the composition of the rest of the NTE films.

At least the title cards were used effectively to clearly separate between act 1, 2 and three in Q.
Ha was divided into the entirely new Mari part, the lighthearted part, and the bombastic dramatic part.
Especially the cut from Asuka's breasty cooking session to the title card to the shot from space of the exploding EVA 04 was pretty clear.
Jo had only two parts, but I can't remember the separation point.

90% sure it was after Gendo/Fuyutsuki were having their talk (before Operation Yashima) if Shinji won't pilot, they'll make Rei do it. Rei in Eva-01 is risky, children having their fate planned since 14 years ago is too cruel, etc, etc.

Ah, so Shinji wakes up again. Interesting, but not such a clear distinction like in Ha and Q. But that's to be expected, since Jo's story has originally been crafted for 6 20 Minute-long Episodes.

Still, Anno could have circumvented this issue a little in having put Shinji waking up in the hospital as first scene and having him waking up with a strange ceiling again at the start of the second arc.

IIRC, it's Shinji awakening in the hospital with Rei next to him, then Gendo and Fuyu discussing the option of using brainwashing on Shinji if he refuses to participate in operation Yashima, then the title card, then Misato visiting Shinji in the hospital at night, just before dragging him to show him Lilith.

Well it's parted between old and new content then, I guess. Nothing too interesting to be found.

I thought of a really simple idea a couple days ago that I was going to work into my sequel theory but just felt like adding here.

Since Final is going to be another alternate ending wouldn't it just that ending plus the other 3 endings making it 3+1?

The more times this thread keeps getting bumped after weeks or months of no posts, the more everyone gets duped into thinking there's actual news on the full title. :|
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

I feel like a lot of people who think more light hearted anime is automatically otaku trash just try to view 2.0 like that because they want to justify that they like it. They have forgotten the Action Arc from NGE apparently.
The silly comedy and all that represent happiness in Eva.
The "Poka Poka Rei" is just there to show that interacting with people does bring results.
Asuka crushing on Shinji is...a person crushing on another person. Something normal. That's it. It's not like he is painted as perfect. But Shinji isn't a hardcore otaku weirdo either. Just a guy that fails at relationships. Like in 2.0, in a way...

90% sure it was after Gendo/Fuyutsuki were having their talk (before Operation Yashima) if Shinji won't pilot, they'll make Rei do it. Rei in Eva-01 is risky, children having their fate planned since 14 years ago is too cruel, etc, etc.

It's Fuyutsuki commenting how cruel it is that Shinji's and Rei's destiny is planned (I think you confused that one with the later one :P ), and then Shinji punching Toji.

I think it separates the two parts nicely. We go from the negativity from part 1 to Shinji opening up more, though we know the horrible shit isn't over (Ramiel).

BTW, I love how each of the three parts of 3.0 is 30 minutes. And it's the third film. And kyu means 9 I think? And the film is 90 minutes (without credits).
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...

Ba-da-bump.

Okay, now that the trailer is out, discussion has been swirling, and something in particular occurred to me during conversation on discord.

3.0+1.0 as a title is much more straight forward than we give it credit for.

I've discussed before what I think about the four Adams and their connections to Blake's mythology, specifically the fall of Albion (aka the primordial man). To briefly summarize, I believe the mystery of the four Adams to be central to the plot of the new films, and that the endgame will involve reconstituting the four split Adams into a whole Adam. Reichu's own analysis is in agreement with this interpretation, and she has fleshed out some of these ideas beyond what I could ever imagine.

What we know is that Eva-13 is an Adams, this much is explicit. We also know that Eva-13 has already absorbed the Mark.06, which is strongly suspected to be an Adams. Our next suspect is Unit-01, which we will go over in a bit. Last on our list is the Key of Nebuchadnezzar, which is in Gendo's possession, and has so far adopted the role of the Adam in the original series. Well, thanks to the new trailer, we know Gendo gets his hands on Eva-13 (complete with two spears, an Angel, and having achieved awakened status; this sucker is Impact ready). What does this leave us with? A situation where Gendo has 3 Adams and only needs 1 more, which of course is Unit-01 tucked away in the Wunder.

3 Adams plus 1

3.0+1.0

To supplement this, what really made me realize this was a conversation regarding the Vatican Treaty on discord. As we know, the Vatican Treaty was an international agreement that would prevent one country from possessing more than 3 active Evangelions. Of course, this makes sense from the point of view of preventing a single country from becoming too powerful, but why the number 3 specifically? Or rather, why the active avoidance of the number 4? Why, unless this is to prevent the union of 4 Evangelions? Or more specifically, 4 Adams?

Further, we shouldn't forget the full title of the film, which includes Shin Evangelion or True Evangelion. Is that what we get when we reunite 4 Adams together? The "true" Evangelion? (Reichu could probably go on further about this)

Of course, there's other things to note which will probably have implications going forward, like Lilith/Rei also being involved with Unit-01/an Adams and Yui, the potential for Gendo to be absorbed into Eva-13 along with the other Adams and Kaworu, and finally all of the above coming together in a glorious display representing the archetypal man and woman in the act of procreation. It's going to be beautiful. But I digress, this thread is about the film's title!

Anyways, that's what I got. The title 3.0+1.0 is a very direct title that aptly describes what we're going to see in the film, and doesn't involve any loop theory nonsense to explain it. Sorry folks, we're not resetting the timeline.
