OK, so these are just going to be a series of very short "flash-fics" based on the pictures we see in the Studio Khara 2014/5 calendar. Some of them are serious, some aren't. Here's the first one, which is based on the railroad scene.
The parched red earth of Near Third Impact had given way to green vegetation, yet the world seemed just as lifeless as it had always been. If there were any humans--any lilin--around, they were all either dead or had gone somewhere very, very far away. All of them, that is, except for three silent figures walking along an abandoned railroad track in hopes it would lead them to some vestige of civilization. Yet even this was a new experience for the one in the rear, the one whose name--no, whose designation--was Rei Ayanami.
To her the world as it existed outside of the environment she was raised in was a bewildering array of alien geometries and sensations, compounded by sights for which she had never been taught the proper words. So to her, the four-legged animal that sat on the railroad track was more bizarre than any Angel.
As Rei paused and stared at the cat, both Shinji and Asuka continued to walk for a short distance before noticing she was no longer following them. Turning around, both of them saw what had distracted her.
Asuka was distinctly displeased. "Come on, Rei," she snapped. "We need to get back to the Wunder soon, and I'd rather you not hold us up."
Shinji, however, took a more prosaic interest in what he saw. "A cat. . . don't you realize what this means?"
Asuka scowled at him. "So? It's a cat. I had a pet cat back in Germany. It's nothing to be excited about. " With that she walked over to Rei, harshly grabbed her by the shoulder, and forcibly dragged her off down the railroad track.
So? It's a cat, Shinji thought to himself, But it's also a living creature. That means that there's still hope. It means that not everything on this planet is doomed. As the three of them walked down the railroad track, he was fairly sure he even saw Rei look back at where the cat had been.

Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

I don't know if I'll have the next one up today, but what did you like about that one?

Simply the idea - Shinji "finds hope" (as we've been promised) in the simple appearance of a cat. Rei's puzzlement is sweet, too. Details - making Rei's name a mere designation worked for me as well.

I've actually been wondering if we might not see something like this in FINAL.

I'm not sure if Asuka would call her "Rei" (either "Ayanami" or a nickname seems more likely... Asuka seems to like giving people nicknames). But other than that, I enjoyed it. Your depiction of this Rei made a lot of sense (after all, we're talking about someone who didn't even know what the word "like" meant), and it was nice that the cat gave Shinji some hope.

Glad you liked it! I should have the next one up soon; it'll be a more comedic, lighthearted piece, based on the picture of 02 swimming with some whales.

I think you should put the corresponding calendar image in each of your drabbles, it would be easier to us to see of which one you're talking about.

Seriously, that is the most fananked theory I've ever heard, more than Mari being Marty McFly travelling through time to keep her parents (Asushin) together. -- Jäeger

Here's the next story, based on this picture:
The Guinness Book of World Records had ceased publishing in the years following Second Impact, but if they were still around, they would certainly have listed the Tokyo 3 Sea Life Preservation Aquarium as the world's largest swimming pool, and Evangelion Unit 02 as the world's largest swimmer. Of course, NERV would have preferred to test the EVA's swimming abilities in a facility with fewer fish, but since no such facility existed they were forced to settle for the aquarium.
Not that this mattered much to Asuka Langley Shikinami, the pilot of Unit 02. Sure, the fish and other sea life in the huge tank the aquarium had rented out to NERV were pretty, but the fact was that she had never been very fond of swimming. Why couldn't they just have asked Miss Four-eyes to do it?, she thought to herself, while failing to notice that the sight of a 200-foot-tall red cyborg flailing about in the water was drawing snickers from the recording crew.
As the recording crew continued to watch, Asuka finally found herself in a functional swimming position and began the surprising difficult task of paddling from one end of the aquarium to the other. When she did, she noticed that two of the Aquarium's humpback whales--the largest animals it had in captivity--were swimming alongside her. For a moment, she could even forget she was in an Eva. It was more like she was floating in deep space, her Eva unit the only thing protecting her from an expanding emptiness that seemed to stretch forever and. . .
Unfortunately these mystifying thoughts were cut rudely short when Unit 02 bumped its head quite hard on the glass wall of the Aquarium. Rubbing her head (and likewise causing Unit 02 to do the same), Asuka cursed herself for allowing herself to get distracted in such a way.
SPOILER: Show
