I recently re-watched End of Evangelion, and the music that plays during the infamous sandbox sequence caught my attention.
I noticed that the Theory and Analysis: Sandbox Sequence page in the Wiki identifies the music as a Japanese children's song, "Te o hiraite." I must confess that I am not familiar with that song, nor have I been able to find it online (but then, I don't speak or read Japanese).
However, I think the song is actually older than that. The tune is unmistakably Jean-Jacque Rousseau's Greenville.
I recognized the tune because it often accompanies Protestant hymns, and I grew up in a religious household (my parents are actually Mormon, but that's beside the point). For example, you can listen to a somewhat slowed-down version here.
It might be worth noting this connection on the Wiki.
