I think the biggest problem with Bay's movies is that somebody, I think the FX department, decided they wanted to fight the whole scale thing and keep it 'realisitc' instead of having a 60 foot long fighter jet transform into a robot that can ride inside another robot that also turns into a jet and a steam locomotive.

Or was Astrotrain diesel? I can't remember.

I think he was steam.

It gets better though. He didn't just turn into a jet- he transformed into a goddamn space shuttle.

I for one admire the Bay movies for getting the scale mostly spot on.

That a new Battlefield game gets a split-screen, so I'd have a reason to buy one.

That we get a Sci-fi film, of any franchise, that holds its science in equal esteem to its characters.

That Petroglyph manages to make a successful game again.

That the ELAM (I was Trivial Being first, their parlance lives on in me) Trilogy, as negotiated by WETA with Hideaki Anno back in 2006 gets made. I'd prefer that ADV-leftovers weren't anywhere around to garner a benefit from this, but I don't really care.

Gainax re-releases NGE on Blu-ray and DVD for the 20th anniversary, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

All of Japan's NGE games get translated and released in the west as a compilation in celebration of the 20th anniversary.

A new Resident Evil with pre-RE4 gameplay.

A complete PS4 remake of Code Veronica X.

I've since learned that the accepted term for the stuff we are getting these days is "Pink SF" and that the genre has been undergoing its own latest faGGotry in the States (just looking at the Hugo candidates for this year is enough to give acid flashbacks to the worst of the late '60s "New Wave").

So can we rewind 50 years and try again -- we already had the social issues cracked back then.

MEDIA IN GENERAL:

[See Graveyard for resulting tangent. - Monk]

GAMING:

-For Platinum to make a Kill la Kill game, on PC and WiiU.

-For Jet Set Radio to get a sequel (Future doesn't technically count as it was more a remake than a sequel. It was still awesome though).

-For the PS4's PSN to become free to use like it was on the PS3, so I can justify buying one and getting LittleBIGplanet 3.

-For the creators of 5 Nights At Freddy's to release a secret "silly mode" for the game, where the animatronics are turned from homocidal abominations to misunderstood clumsy idiots (with Golden Freddy just being an animatronic with an unfortunate habit of teleporting and giving people heart attacks when he falls asleep). Seriously, that game actually looks awesome but I'm too scared to play it. Those teeth, man.

-For Anita Sarkeesian and her cult to be crushed and banished forever from the gaming industry.

-For Dawn of War 3 to come out, ditching the base-building/unit production StarCraft bullshit entirely and switching to a format where you pick your army before the game starts and then deploy it and command it, like actual 40K.

-For Darksiders 3 to come out.

FILM:

-For the upcoming live-action Shingeki no Kyojin movie not to suck.

-For more use of "practical" effects (animatronics, suits and miniatures) in movies, especially sci-fi. Seriously, Moon was awesome, especially with the miniature moon rover.

-For Toho to make another Godzilla movie, with proper tokusatsu.

-For Prometheus to get a sequel and for it to be good (I honestly liked Prometheus but it could have been better).

-For satire/parody to finally get a decent revival. Seriously, how did we go from Airplane! to Scary Movie 7?

ANIME:

-For Harmony Gold and Big West to cease existing entirely and for Macross in its entirety to get a proper English release, including DYRL. Also for Robotech to finally die and people to accept it's nothing more than a shell of a franchise used to let Harmony Gold keep their iron grip on Macross's testes.

-For Kunihiko Ikuhara to do that team-up with David Lynch he always wanted to do.

-For Ikuhara to direct a feature-length movie version of the 3-part finale of the original Sailor Moon series, with as many of the original VAs as possible, completely new animation and even more nightmare fuel (ramping up the brutality of the Senshi's deaths by a thousand and possibly making Usagi's sacrifice at the end permanent), called Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: End of the Senshi.

-For Gunbuster to get a proper uncut HD re-release in the UK complete with all the original music, no cut/censored scenes, and the Science Lessons to be included.

Only "censored" bit in Gunbuster worth mentioning (in fact only one I can think of) is in ep 5 when Noriko stands up in bathtub and for split second we see her pubes. DVD and BD releases modified that a bit. This however has been done in all Japanese releases too and to see original cut you need to go back to cancerous quality LD/VHS rips. This act of self-censorship was then done by Anno/GAINAX to begin with and I'm not even sure if original footage exists anymore. I don't mind the change because they changed short instance of rather gratuitous nudity into marginally less gratuitous. Like, whatever. This is no Greedo shooting first case.

As for soundtrack sorry, that's almost certainly not going to happen. The original BGM used in training montage was Hong Kong cinema tier direct ripoff of famous theme from Chariots of Fire. That act of obvious borrowing and parody is not something I have beef with but quite understandably Western releasers do not want to take any chances with plagiarism lawsuit. (I'm not even entirely sure if the original BGM is in the Japanese BD release.)

Lack of Science Lessons is absolutely unforgivable though. Most of them are pretty damn integral to the series itself and not some superfluous data junk you can cut. I'm honestly quite baffled if they're not on UK release. I can't see the rationale at all.

I wonder why they concord Noriko’s pubes. We see Jung Freud’s (very faintly colored) pubes in Episode 2 of the same series.

My understanding is that the Japanese BD doesn't have the original music (I have it, so I'll try to remember to check this evening).

One of the UK releases, at least, has extensive censoring of the bath scene, replacing much of it with repeats of seeing the boys running past the window. Again, I have both UK versions, and will try to pull some evidence.

Framing of the whole shot was changed from closeup to extreme closeup and given Jung pubes remain (and nothing has been done about nudity in general) the rationale for changed cut is most likely not found from self-censorship per se. I think it's simply formal choice by Anno he wanted to revise. That shot of Noriko rising from bath all determined is very quick edit and drawing attention to that act itself (and what it signifies about change in her mental state) is its point. By making framing tighter and closer we focus more on Noriko's action than Noriko herself - and shot ending with slightly shocking cut of Noriko's pubes turns the original shot into Basic Instinct moment that completely undermines the purpose of shot itself. It is transitional cut, not something that is supposed to draw attention and linger on in mind too much. Boobs in beginning of shot are seen in beginning and is instance of pretty casual nudity in contrast and thus do not present problem (heck, you can't even avoid her breasts if you frame the shot directly like that even if no fanservice was intentional). The most blatant and pornographic crotch shot in whole series? Talk about distracting, gratuitous and memorable.

In short change of shot changes subject of shot from Noriko (or more precisely her body given how lovingly and fixed the gaze of "camera" remains anchored so we get to gradually see her from head to pubes) to Noriko's action. Either way it works also as "fanservice" but only the changed cut fulfills its primary function within scene well.

Yeah I have vague recollection they're covering all their bases. I wasn't entirely sure though.

Oh, I didn't know that. Now that's weird and awkward. I mean, that bath scene (ep 2 I gather) is both long and really important. Nudity in it isn't even pointless and simply gratuitous as differing degrees of coverage for Amano, Noriko and Jung set in place their power relations and relative vulnerability (heck, the whole scene could be seen as instance of Anno subtly and gleefully sodomizing monolithic West and its now-disregardable power).

Not cool at all then.

Hmm, if Anno himself was like "Y'know what, maybe we shouldn't have such a long shot of Noriko's crotch, let's change it up a bit" I can accept that- if it was actual censorship by execs/importers then yeah, fuck that noise.

Also, I have to praise Anno and co for actually giving her a relatively realistic and not at all "dolled up" crotch, and I think the generally casual attitude to nudity in the series is one of its strong points. (Also Noriko is probably my waifu...yeah, I got nuttin'.)

As for soundtrack sorry, that's almost certainly not going to happen. *Snipsnip*

Honestly I didn't think it was that big a ripoff- if anything it was an affectionate parody (much like the whole training montage). I can imagine the legal hassle though, so I understand the decision. That said, IIRC the soundtrack being replaced did leave the audio quality noticably reduced across the whole set in one release, so...yeah.

I suppose it's a similar case to what happened with The Big O, which had a really awesome pair of OPs that were homages to classic 70s rock...and nearly got them sued because the record companies apparently hadn't heard of tributes before.

Lack of Science Lessons is absolutely unforgivable though. Most of them are pretty damn integral to the series itself and not some superfluous data junk you can cut. I'm honestly quite baffled if they're not on UK release. I can't see the rationale at all.

I'm sad to say I've never actually seen the Science Lessons, as the version I saw (this was when I was filthy streamfag) didn't have them. IIRC, weren't they made some time after the original OVA was released? One of them references Sailor Moon, which didn't even exist until 1992.

More yuri anime is always good. Always. IIRC Sakura Trick's sole redeeming feature was an excess of girl-on-girl snogging. Which is always fun.

I'm sure there's some obscure OVA from the 90s that does lesbian action "convincingly" though. Myself I'm waiting for a Mecha Musume anime where the girls are more Mecha than Musume. Steel-plated skin, mechanical limbs, roaring smokestacks, mighty iron fists, rivets... truly womanly attributes. My big complaint with Kantai Collection is that the girls are just cute girls in themed outfits with ship backpacks as opposed to cyborg hybridized monstrosities whose mere step causes the earth to tremble, and whose voices are like the roars of the mighty foghorns of long-forgotten waships, announcing to the world that they are the greatest naval weapons ever constructed and the time for war- and your doom- is nigh.

TL,DR: Less moe bullshit. More ironclad badassness.
