This is a few days old, but it looks like it went under the radar, so I decided to post about this. There is going to be a live action adaptation of Kazuhiko Shimamoto's autobiographical manga Aoi Honō. The manga is a semi-fictionalized story of the mangaka's time at college. At that time, Shimamoto was friends with with Gainax founders Hiroyuki Yamaga, Takami Akai, and Anno himself. They will also be on the show as well. Keep in mind though, that unlike Insufficient Direction, Anno will not be a main character in this show. I don't know too much about live action Japanese shows, but I thought that maybe it's a good idea to have a thread about this.

It's a good idea. Has anyone read this manga?
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

I just caught up with it (currently on 10th episode, right at DAICON III). It is openly fictional (if only for being a hyperbolic comedy) but uses nicely some legendary traits of Anno and moments in the prehistory of Gainax...
SPOILER: Show

Honoo's own story and strugle is also very easy to be drawn to.
Also, Kojima Haruna's late participation offers an extra pleasure for wota.

You should give it a shot if you haven't. It's pretty funny.

Okay, I'm definitely going to look this up and watch it!

When the whole thing is out can someone compile and post all of Anno's Best Moments?

You can't call yourself a Gainax fan if you don't watch this.

Where is the best site to watch this? YouTube only has 1-minute long clips, it seems.

You may have to do it the illegal way, either downloading it or searching for "watch blue blazes" on google or something.

I'll be watching the first episode in a few minutes, as soon as it transfers itself to my media player.

EDIT: I watched the first episode. Parts of it were good, but I wasn't wowed. I'll probably keep watching it, though.

^ Watch at least until episode 3, when Anno made a short animation for the school's commercial assignment. That's when I was left speechless.

Watched the second episode. This live action show really feels like an anime, doesn't it? Third episode will be watched this afternoon.

duuuuude, when Anno asked for the autograph

This series hit sometimes a little bit too close for me. Reminded me of my time at art school, being delusional hot blooded dork

I will definitely rewatch the directors cut when it's out.

Quite a few people say this was actually the best anime of this season - can't say I disagree.

I commited the error of not keeping this on my radar when it was first being mentioned around here, and it would probably have remained that way had it not been for this thread. As soon as i saw this (spoiler alert):

SPOILER: Show

I just had to know the work behind such a powerful image, and by god am i glad i did. The struggles and history of Anno, Gainax, and some other figures in the anime industry (and to a lesser degree GAINAX) have always been very interesting and vitalizing topic for me, and the shamelessly hammy touch to the series plays up all the things I love of it up to 11.

And reading up a bit more into the series itself it became apparent that aside from the future directors it’s a pretty relatable story of hot blooded aspiring artist and his development in a very well made (hilarious) comedy.

And all the growing interest became jubilant hype once I saw the Opening thingie. This is seriously the greatest thing I have watched in months.

So yeah, earnestly waiting for the chance to watch Aoi Hono/Blue Blazes.

SPOILER: Show
ANNO... HIDEAKI...

I have to check this out. I was looking in some of the usual places for it but was having no luck. Where might a guy with no access to Japanese TV or the ability to speak Japanese & require English subtitles find this show? If anyone can PM me a link I'd greatly, greatly GREATLY appreciate it!

P.S. Is this an ongoing series or is it a mini-series with an end in sight?

So anyway I have been watching this and it is insanely good, I have only been able to find it on streaming sites that dont seem to have cache recording enabled, I'd like to be able to watch this offline, so if anyone has any leads to that a pm would be appreciated.

Just finished the series. I felt like the lead, although really talented at physical comedy, was just a little too over the top, and his story shallow although there were hints of character development here and there -- that being said, it's a must-watch for fans of Gainax or people nostalgic about the start of the industry, and Anno and company are the best part of the series.

I'm glad that they called out all the cameos in the credits as I would've missed them otherwise -- pay attention to them!
