Would anyone be interested in a Madoka Magica RP?

So, I was thinking that a Puella Magi Madoka Magica RP would be pretty fun. Unfortunately I have no experience modding an RP, and I'm worried I'd fuck it up.

So, I was wondering:

1: Who'd be interested in playing in a PMMM RP?

2: Is there anybody who could mod/help me mod the RP? as I've said I have no experience running RPs, so ideally I'd need someone to mod it for me/help co-run it.

3: Alternatively, would anybody be interested in starting/running a PMMM RP themselves? Really I'd rather just be a player in an RP rather than running/moderating it, as I don't have a lot of confidence in my modding abilities, although if someone was willing to tutor me in the ways of RPing I'd be happy to learn.

Thanks for reading!

Just to add some precisions from our discussion in the PMMM thread, that eventual RP will happen in the "pre-Madokami" universe, meaning that there are still Witches, Familiars and Grief Seeds.

Now are we limited to Japan, or can we make it happen in another country?

Also the time period, have it to happen during present days, or can we put the RP on another time period like the past, like during WWII, with some of the MG working for the Nazis as specialists to hunt down Allied MG and Jews girls who contracted (one of them could be the SS MG officer that hunt down and captured Anne Frank) or with special squads of MG that survived long enough to grow-up and are used to thwart the Nazis' researches on magic, such as means to control and weaponize Witches or to discover the mechanism behind Incubator contracting to copy it and make the whole Hitler Youth into Magical Girls and Boys or worse, to use it on the German army as a whole, seeing it as a way to transcend the Aryan race to superior beings and while on it to utterly curbstomp the Allies forces! Magical Girl with a hat as part of her costume and a whip as a weapon optional!

Or in the Cold War era with spies MG, or maybe the Incubators make them keep a low profile, and they have to continue their Witch hunts while keeping a low profile, something very difficult because they're right in the peak of the "Red Scare" hysteria and any "suspicious" behavior raising questions about ones true allegiance, and regular disappearance for various hours in Witch hunts and eventual reunions with other girls to participate on the hunt are definitively suspicious behaviors, for extra-lulz maybe one of the girls actually is a communist-sympathizer!

Or maybe go even further in the past, during the Crusade, with the Templar using knighted young girls as God's handmaiden against the Saracenics, and the later retaliating with their own "Allah's chosen", maybe add MG from the sect of the Hashashin (also known as Assassins!), and have all of them realize that their power comes from the same fucking ferret and try to overcome their differences, or not.

Hell you could even go even farther back during the biblical times if you feel a little subversive!

That's what's great with Kyubey's claim that the Incubators granting wishes is what let humanity advance so quickly : every legend, myth and fairy tails can be explained as "a MG did it"!

Making the story happening in the future is obviously impossible due to Madokami's ascension, unless we make an AU.

Well, I was thinking of it happening in the "present" of PMMM, just for the sake of simplicity. Historical Puella Magi would be really interesting (the Cold War idea particularly tickles my fancy) but I'd rather save that for a fanfic.

Locationwise, I was thinking somewhere in Japan, but not Mitakihara- I was actually thinking maybe Osaka, or even Kyoto. Another country would be possible, although it would need to be set in a city, I think, for maximum population density and thus increased Puella Magi conflicts/Witch manifestations.

I was thinking it would be an AU in the sense that the "official" characters would not be involved (either because they wouldn't exist in this universe or because they're simply too far away to be relevant). Aside from that, it would follow the same rules as the "normal" PMMM-verse, with the exception that the Incubators, whilst subconsiously connected as in the official universe, have some degree of individuality- some have names, different appearances and different personalities/tempers. We could even throw in a plot relating to a "rogue" Incubator that has gained emotions, which are after all considered mental illness to the Incubators.

The characters could be any nationality- I was thinking of doing a Vietnamese Puella Magi, for example.

Sounds interesting. If you give me some time, I could A) find somebody to help you co-GM, or B) learn enough about it to do that myself.

It's been awhile since I did any rp's and rp's are usually how I come up with ideas for stuff. If this happens I think I might convert one of my upcoming characters from PG to be used in this.

Kinda debating with myself if I should use a younger version of Saturnian Assassin from Parasite Galaxy or if I should try making a magical girl who has the ability to manipulate biological organisms which is another idea.

For the saturnian assassin adaptation imagine a younger version of the girl with the katana wearing the oni mask in the character design sheet cluedog did for me here

I'm interested in this.

Personally, I'd prefer a setting "twenty minutes into the future" where ubiquitous surveillance technology and social media aggregation has resulted in a broken masquerade. Magical girls are public knowledge. Various government agencies and large corporations sponsor magical girl teams and employ their unique abilities with dubious intentions. Humanity is racing to unlock the secrets of the sufficiently advanced technology that makes magical girls tick. Most have realized that we're several centuries, if not millennia, behind the curve, but those with the money and resources to throw at the problem see nothing but limitless potential. Something like that.

I could even see a NERV-like organization tasked with taking down Walpurgisnacht-class witches when they appear. I'm sure the obvious crossover has been done before, though. There's also To The Stars, with magical girls ...IN SPACE!

I'd like to suggest the whimsical name of Iibey for our unique incubator. lol, caveat emptor, very punny

I may need as much as a week to put a character together once the setting has been finalized. Also, I haven't properly RP'd since the ancient threads with BobBQ et al, so I'm very rusty.

You sir, is a man of taste! ;)

I immediately thought of To The Stars when you talked about mass surveillance technology, broken masquerade and a giant NERV-like extra-national Magical Girl organization, which is more or less what the MSY is, with big SEELE vibes before the masquerade was broken (Yakuza Magical Girls!)

Magical girls as military, huh? I can see the posters now: "Join the army! Become a Magical Girl!" I can imagine it would be a really good way to keep despair in check as well.

It's better, it's Magical Girls as SPACE MARINES! But the Incubators are still the ones deciding who has the potential to contract or not, you don't mess with the space ferrets' monopole!
And the despair problems are taken care of by a special Mental Health Division of the MG and by Kyoko's newfound Church worshiping Madokami!

More seriously, if you have time to invest, go see this fic, it's an absolute blast, one of those rare shiny jewels that make you keep faith in fanficiton in general!

I've already made some advertising about it in the PMMM thread, so I'll simply link to the post in question.

The only thing to know is that Magical Girls + Hard Sci Fi inspired from classics and Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri + lots of world building = WIN.

And Field Marshall Tomoe Mami = MEGA WIN!

I just remembered I have a Madokaverse OC concept sitting around for a future project. It's pretty grimdark, but it shouldn't take more than a few days to adapt to our setting, assuming it's still somewhat close to 'present day, present time'. Not that I'm advocating against future interstellar war with alien angels/bugs/squids/whathaveyou.

Oh I already know this artist, better post a link to an image of all the main cast, don't you think?

That author is the one who do most of To The Stars fanarts, and also has a second DA account (from which the Field Marshall Mami in full regalia comes from) where it recently released an animated fanart of a space battlecruiser and its resident MG mimicking AI, and some example of its chameleon camouflage (any similarity with Remilia Scarlet were purely intentional, the author even plans to make the rest of the Scarlet Mansion into a fleet of spaceships!)

Memes and fanart are fun, but let's get down to brass tacks.

To answer Squig's still pertinent questions:

2. I have considerable experience running table-top RP, which is a very different sort than the freeform style that typifies the RP threads here at EvaGeeks. I can do the PnP RNGs (i.e. witch pop tables, character stats, etc.) but, as I said before, freeform is something I haven't done properly in years.

3. I'm afraid to run something like this myself. I suspect I may be capable of inducing mood whiplash with lethal force. Having a partner and an unambiguous safety word would be much appreciated.
More seriously, I'm not sure I understand the nuances that distinguish an RPG GM and an FFRP moderator. If you want structured combat sequences, it might be a good idea to just designate a GM to play the witches. In that case, I'd be happy to fill that role. But I'm still not sure what kind of structure, if any, you're looking for at this point.

Oh, it's not out of lack of willing that I'm nervous about running it, it's lack of confidence. I'd be happy to co-run it with you, as you sound very competent at this sort of thing (the most important thing you need for this sort of RP is good judgement), and I actually think a tabletop-style RP would be fun. We'd need to limit the amount of statistic-based gameplay obviously (using dicerolls would be impossible for obvious reasons) but I think some level of statistics would help things.

MAGI-01, BPES, Atropos and Agentomega are well versed in RPing, if you want advice from someone who knows their stuff

Here's a rough idea for story/gameplay framework, with a little bit of everybody's ideas mixed in. Please bear in mind this is only a rough idea.

Story  SPOILER: Show
This version of the PMMM multiverse takes place in an AU where the "official" Puella Magi (Kyoko, Mami, Sayaka etc) don't exist. It's set several years (15 give-or-take) after the time frame when PMMM would have occurred. After a particularly powerful witch (not Walpurgisnacht level, but powerful enough to exist without a barrier) was actively recorded being fought and defeated, the government developed and created the Anti-Occult Defense Unit to defend against both witches and Puella Magi, using recovered fragments from the remains of the witch. As such, the Incubators have begun to actively turn the Puella Magi against normal humans, sometimes explicitly ordering them to do so, sometimes using subtle manipulation.

Variations from Canon  SPOILER: Show
In addition to the storyline, there are several deviations from the official canon, notably:

-Incubators are individuals, all with the same goal in mind (with a few exceptions), but with varying "personalities" albeit usually mostly emotionless, and differing appearances/names.
-The Incubators have a major weakness- due to causes beyond their understanding (one theory is impurities in the stock with which they are spawned from) respawning will gradually cause the Incubators to degenerate, both physically and mentally. Over repeated respawns, they will become more and more emotional and less and less stable. For this reason, after reaching a certain state, most Incubators are "retired" and replaced.
-The "official" characters do not exist. This also means no Madokami/Law of Cycles
-The RP takes place in a city other than Mitakihara, possibly Kyoto or Osaka.
-The Anti-Occult Defense Unit exists, and is dedicated to destroying both Puella Magi and Witches.
-The existence of Puella Magi and Witches is known by people other than the Puella Magi/Incubators, although the only ones with any idea of what they are beyond them being magical superhumans are the government and the AODU (They are kept a secret from the public, although occasionally humans witness Puella Magi/Witch fights).
-Witches, after amassing enough power, are capable of leaving their barriers (but only after maturing for many months).
-There are "rogue" Incubators who for whatever reason are disillusioned with the cause of the Incubators (in the series, Kyuubey states that emotion is considered a mental illness in his race, so presumably there are cases of Incubators falling to emotion).

Factions/Important NPCs  SPOILER: Show

Factions:

Puella Magi gangs: There are numerous gangs of Puella Magi who have banded together to hunt witches/exterminate rivals. Some are huge, others small. There are also a great deal of solitary Puella Magi. All of these gangs/loners have their own goals, be it simply surviving or even loyally serving the Incubators. Some have their own Incubator leading them. I would assume that all the players would start in the same "gang".

Important gangs:

Iibey's gang: The gang which the players belong to.

"The Viridian Coven": Myaabey's rogue Puella Magi (see below) who seek to put an end to the Puella Magi system.

Incubators: Basically the same as in canon, with the exception of having individuality.

Important Incubators:

Iibey: The main Incubator that the characters will interact with. Mostly the same as Kyuubey with regards to temperament, but understands humans a bit better, and will outright deceive his charges if he sees fit. His flaw is that he is becoming a pathological liar. His appearance is essentially Kyuubey, but with powder-blue markings instead of pink, square silver ear-bands instead of circular gold ones, and a long, striped tail like that of a lemur.

Myaabey: Rogue Incubator, has become emotional through respawn-induced degeneration and is utterly disgusted at his previous actions. Leads a band of Puella Magi to fight the Incubators and their minions in an attempt to bring an end to the cycle of suffering. His flaw is impulsiveness. Resembles Kyuubey with asymmetrical olive-green markings, and odd eyes (one the usual pink, the other a very dark blue, almost black) and also shorter earlobe-things with no bands. Has rabbit-style ears instead of the usual cat-type. Has a copper collar-like thing around his neck. Fur is matted and he is prone to twitching. Unlike most Incubators, he is highly emotional and extremely unstable, prone to fits of hysteria.

Golbey: Incubator who has seemingly allied with the AODU, although in reality he is manipulating them for the Incubators. Exceedingly cunning and dangerously charming, he is a master manipulator and one of the oldest Incubators in existence, mostly due to having "died" very few times. Provides information and technology for the AODU. He is much like Kyuubey, but with a particularly nasty sadistic streak. His main flaw is cruelty and excess. Physically, he resembles a very fat version of Kyuubey, with peachy-yellow markings, 3 very bushy tails, and short but fat earlobe things, with many ear-bands. He also has 3 eyes.

Anti-Occult Defense Unit: Special operations secret police force, tasked with neutralizing Puella Magi and Witches that threaten the public. Each member is a "Psuedo-Magi"- they have been granted similar durability and powers to full-on puella Magi, although they cannot transform or conjure weapons like a fully contracted Puella Magi, relying instead on weaponry constructed using Incubator technology. They do have Soul Gems, which they must revitalize as a Puella Magi would. However, instead of turning into a full-on Witch upon maximum corruption, they instead become a Grief Spawn- a grotesque mockery of a human being that knows only pain, and whose only relief is a quick death. They are in fact being manipulated by the Incubator known as Golbey to exterminate defiant gangs and provide extra emotional energy.

Important members:

Colonel Tojo Masamune: Previously a police sergeant, he was one of the few survivors of the attack by the witch known as Dominika von Arque, the witch that brought the existence of the Puella Magi to the government's attention. He hates the Witches and the Puella Magi with all his heart for the deaths of his men, most of whom died in the crossfire between the Witch and the Puella Magi. Now commands the AODU, although in reality he is Golbey's unwitting puppet. Does not realize that the AODU is feeding the very thing he set out to destroy.

Golbey: See above.

The Witches: Same as in the series- Puella Magi who have succumbed to despair.

Gamplay ideas  SPOILER: Show

Each player creates their own Puella Magi. They have made their contact before the game begins and start as a Puella Magi. The character creation table should include:

Name (Self explanatory).
Age (Also self explanatory. Shouldn't be higher than 19).
Birthplace/Ethnic background (Where the character is from).
Appearance (Detailed description of physical appearance, including build, colouration- which can of course be very odd given that this is PMMM- usual attire, Puella Magi outfit, distinguishing features, etc. Feel free to include reference pictures or drawings!).
Personality/Behaviour (How the character behaves, their temperament, likes, dislikes, mannerisms etc).
Backstory (The background information on the character, their lives up until this point, their reasons for becoming a Puella Magi, the wish they made, etc. Unless the player wishes it, the wish is by default unknown to the other characters).
Weapons/Abilities (Detailed description of the weapons and attacks/powers/abilities they use. For example: Silver flamberge with blue bird-head shaped hilt, uses water-based powers with a focus on healing, etc. Once again, feel free to provide pictures/references!).
Fighting Style (their style of combat, approach to fighting, etc. For example: evasive style with emphasis on quick, light attacks backed up with magical attacks).

Obviously, feel free to expand on that. Haven't got stat ideas thought out yet, but you'd probably know how to work that in better.
Here lies Squigsquasher.

The idea of the puella magi being turned on humans is actually kind of in line with my idea for the adaptation of Saturnian assassin for this rpg. My idea is that before she became a puella magi her family was killed by yakuza and she became one to get revenge. So along with killing witches she's also sort of become a magical punisher and has been going around killing human criminals as well.

In terms of gameplay, there's one stat I'm absolutely married to at this point: Soul Points. Functionally identical to Blood Points from White Wolf's Vampire games, these points are spent to use and maintain magical abilities.
I'm also partial to using ol' fashioned HP because 1) battle damage as depicted in the show seems thoroughly arbitrary and 2) every time I try to structure MG vs witch combat it ends up looking like an FFXIV primal fight.

Some more things to consider for your characters:
- The nature of your wish. The exact wording is irrelevant. Iibey isn't wicked enough to pull Literal Genie antics. What's important is the intended effect. This will strongly inform your initial abilities. All Puella Magi get enhanced strength, reflexes and durability, but your signature ability (time hax, illusion magic, super healing, etc) is defined by your wish.
- Your weapon. New powers not derived from your signature ability come from your weapon. Mami's muskets are derived from her ribbon whips. Homura's hammerspace storage is a property of her shield. Kyoko can to do damn near anything with her spears. Choose a weapon that morphologically fits with your style.
- Favorite color. Because Mahou Shoujo Sentai are Color Coded For Your Convenience. I don't want to set any rules about who can pick what, only that everyone has to pick something.

I'll have more by Monday.
