Where's my goddamn custom user title? (UT policy thread)

So in the time since I left EGF last (a few custom titles, usually insulting) and now (most regulars have one, and drop the "insulting" prerequisite), custom user titles have started to go from novelty to currency - so what IS the official policy on them now? Are they given as the staff wishes, are requests considered/honored, or is there another method of obtaining one I am unaware of? An official clarification/explicit description of how, why, and what custom titles are granted would make it apparent to the forum at large how one is obtained.

Also, since I'm going on about it, can I stop being "Lilin" already? How about, I dunno..."The Railgunner" (it's my current username anywhere else but here, such as at the ZDoom forums, where I am much more active)?

But on the topic: Official stance on custom titles, requests, and the like - what exactly IS it, and can it be codified?

Be an established cool-dude who we like. That's pretty much the gist.

We occasionally, and randomly go and give them out. There's no guidelines or formula for it. It's more like, "hey, I like that guy, he's been around a while. Let's give him a cool user title".

I'm guessing my title has something to do with my disastrous Doujin December rollout.

Stayed long (3 years for me), posted consistently, asked a mod if it was okay, then messaged an admin to have it changed to what I wanted it to be. Well that's my experience anyway.

You have to have been a member for at least 3-4 years and have a good posting history in order to ask for one.

I think it's cause your post count is pretty high for someone who's been around for only as long as you have. You joined a couple weeks after me and have about 5,000 more posts than I do. Plus you're one suave muthaphugga, so that helps too.

I was okay with it for the brief time I had it. It originated as a way to piss off (I think) TDSA, though.

I think it's because he's achieved the "Pilot" title, even though that isn't a custom one.

There are a number of people with titles who don't really qualify for them in the usual sense but just happened to catch an admin's attention at the right time. Perk of the job I guess? ^_^

There have been times when the staff has offered to just hand them out, but in such a case you get what we feel like giving you and it's just too bad if you don't like it. If you want a say in what you get you'll just have to wait until we decide you're due.

In case anyone was wondering, it's only the admins who have actual ability to dole out custom titles, so if you try to angle for one of those random hand-outs it's going to be the whims of one of them you'll be subject to.

Oh thank you, I was worried about Faz handing out unfathomably lame custom user titles

Huh. This was a useful thread. I kept wondering how all these titles came about.

I now feel I have been educated. My brain meats are bulging.

Crap, I guess that disqualifies me, my much more recent good posting streak notwithstanding, although it can be argued that for at least three of the past three years I've been here, I've been nothing but nice, mostly because it finally sank in that who ships who with what ain't any of my friggin' business. Also, short-lived fatherhood.

Also, if "The Railgunner" and "Mr. Chicken" are both out, than "Lyrical Magical" will more than suffice.
