Some site statistics

Since the site's now been running on a Xen VPS, we've been able to closely manage what gets installed or not installed. Some of the things that's running now is webalizer, since it's something that I use for other client sites that I run. It prints up some interesting stats.

The wiki and the forum are the big traffic parts of the site, the front page, not so much in comparison. The majority of the month of October saw some 7.3 million hits and about 127k unique visitors to the wiki. The forum saw 9.2 million hits but only 43k unique visitors. More traffic from a smaller subset of people, which makes sense for a forum. This bit is also kind of interesting:

Hmm.... I wasn't expecting Italy to be among the countries which managed to differentiate themselves from the "Others" category.

New Zealand is 16th on the wiki, but not in the top 30 on the forums.

The US dominance on the forum is impressive, even other english speaking countries have only a fraction of the usage it has.

Not surprising, the United States had more than twice the population of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand combined.

Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Nice. Didn't really expect that, especially given the average Italian's infamous English skills, at least when compared to our northern neighbours. The recent Rebuild screenings sure helped.
We're still way behind in the forum rankings, though.

@Ornette: do you have some stats for OSes and browsers? Just wondering.

We get that kind of stuff through a site-wide traffic monitoring:

And of course, Ornette is secretly mailing all of this to the NSA. A brilliant plot.

It's amazing how high the percentages for Chrome and Firefox are given how small the numbers for Linux are. So basically a lot of people are running Windows just to boot some open-source software. (Gaming aside).

That has a lot to do with all the downsides to using IE, before we got UAC and IE7 -- and the fact that IE still doesn't have the ecosystem that Mozilla has created.

The stats package is showing its age by not showing mobile platforms like iOS or Android, which I expect make up most of the Unknown OS entries; and their respective browser types -- I would expect we have more users with UC than use the KDE browsers at the bottom of the list.
