Those are callbacks, and all of them have an in-universe explanation, except Kaworu's words. And that hints more toward a self-contained time-loop rather than a multiverse.

To add on here, with the installment of Q, I believe it debunks the sequel theory. Instead, it's more implied that the Rebuild is a loop of its own universe that is isolated from NGE/EoE.

Essentially, there are two possible timelines that involves Kaworu. Q is basically the timeline where Third Impact from Ha was not stopped by Kaworu. The other suggested timeline is that Kaworu from Q somehow travels back in time to the last possible moment to stop Ha's third impact.
Q!Kaworu: "I'm sorry I couldn't give you the happiness you desired"
Ha!Kaworu: "This time, I'll make you happy, Shinji"

If that's the case then the plot that was mentioned in the preview to FINAL 'll be dumped like the one to 3.0. The preview of 2.0 was close to the final production. Khara shouldn't have done the previews in the first place if they know that the final product is less than what the audience have seen. Or they intended this.

The previews of 3.0 and FINAL could hint to the possible outcomes of the conclusion. While one final battle 'll be settled in a dark future, the other one 'll be made in the present. That's like Terminator and also like a parallel similar to EoTV and EoE. Two events that complement to each other.

Though I would rather want to see Shinji struggle through his self made hell than that.
I carry out things right to the end. No. Matter. What.

Multiple coincidences do not a multiverse make. It's cool, yeah, but I'd be hard-pressed to make a serious argument that the worlds of NTE and NGE are one and the same.

@The Cruel
It's entirely hard to properly judge the nature of the previews. The preview for Ha showed a scene where Misato slaps Ritsuko, but we never get that in the released movie. As for the preview for Q, it can be argued that what happened in that preview was essentially a very brief recap of the 14 year gap. Lastly, FINAL's preview is pretty up in the air; it's anyone's guess.

Overall, the nature of Rebuild previews can't be treated like previews from the original series. No rhyme or rhythm.

What is the explanation for the outlined figure in the beginning of 1.11? I never understood, why that's there.

The script calls is a "trace of Second Impact", nothing more. And we know that NTE's 2I had nothing to do with EoE's Third Impact, unless there were three others hidden Evas that ascended with EVA-01 when Lilith died with Instrumentality.

Aaaaah, thanks, guys. I remember now. Now the "almost Evas" in Q make much more sense. It seems people go into an Eva-like state (or Eva-like beings emerge) whenever an impact happens in the new movies...

Come to think of it... Any notes about the robotic arms in Nerv HQ and the Eva-like things in the vast red barren land in the Groundworks of Q?
(I guess not)

There is a thread about it, just don't know where.

A contract with Lilith? Do they happen to call it a Covenant by any chance? Because that's sounds appropriate with a God.

Perhaps they made the contract to get the Angels out of Instrumentality under guidelines of only which I'm only beginning to fathom.

They are callbacks, the same way Space Battleship Yamato 2199 shows callbacks even from the USA adaptation and that doesn`t mean "OMG, It's a seque/timeloopl!!!!"

The script calls is a "trace of Second Impact", nothing more. And we know that NTE's 2I had nothing to do with EoE's Third Impact, unless there were three others hidden Evas that ascended with EVA-01 when Lilith died with Instrumentality.

And dont' forget the Adam in the moon, which also explains the blood stain

Rebuid's 2I took place in it's own way, and that's a fact. It's not EoE 3I.

Image

The blood stain it's explained in 2.0 CRC. Showing images that mimic ep 1-6 is just.....dumb BECAUSE 1.0 IS A REMAKE FROM THE FIRST SIX CHAPTERS. That's the worst argumento for the sequel theory.

The chalk image is explained and remeber that the eva series didn't have spread legs and were headless

Only Kaworu's words are a mistery and everybody points at in universe loop or alt universe, but never a sequel. Which has no sense. Everything is reset except the remains from 3I?? Shinji and Asuka called Lillith and asked for a reset because they were bored? What about Yui's soul travelling trough space?

I knw that is Evangelion and is a fanwank factory, but callbacks are the main dish from reboots/retellings/alt universes in movies, comics, mangas, other anime, etc....

Can you share it with us please?

Personally, I gave up on the time loop theory when "You Can (Not) Redo" came out. Whatever happens next, Shinji's gonna have to live with the consequences of his actions.
I’ll escape now from this world, from the world of Jean Valjean, Jean Valjean is nothing now! Another story must begin!

Maybe the consequences of his actions is the timeloop :irked: If there is a timeloop, no one has said it's been reset yet :irked:

When I saw this new title I thought immediately about "Theory loop" (I think it's stronger) but I really would like that the story can continue since the last time and that Shinji will find happiness (in some way) in his reality. Now I don't know what to think and only I can say that Anno is trolling to the fans again...

Well, apart from this, I think simple theory about Anno didn't put 4.0 because 4 means "death" could be valid too (maybe the end is full of hope, so "death" is not appropriate). Also, in this last film the principal color is white, that I think it's the color of Gods in Japan, well, so it could have a type of meaning. However, Theory loop I think is winning.

Speculating about this topic, I wonder: what if some title just represent to each pilot and his situations on each film?... I mean:
- Rebuild 1.0 (First Child = Rei) You are (not) alone: At first, Rei was alone but finally she discovered that it wasn't true, because she had a new friend who was Shinji.
- Rebuild 2.0 (Second Child = Asuka) You can (not) advance: At first, Asuka couldn't express her feelings and couldn't progress in her attitude, but then she gave a step to front and following in her life (she could progress and advance in her personality, she grew up). Or if you think in another way: At first, she was more confidente in herself, but suddenly she noticed she couldn't advance in her relationship with Shinji and against to Bardiel, so she finally lost in this battle and she couldn't advance.
- Rebuild 3.0 (Third Child = Shinji) You can (not) redo: Obviously, all we know that Shinji couldn't redo the N3I disaster. He tried to do it but finally he failed.
- Rebuild 3.0 + 1.0 (Shinji and Rei?) Well, Rebuild until now showed us more interaction between Shinji and Rei, so Rebuild's final could be about how these two important characters would end (together?). I don't know, but maybe a "new Lilith" could appear and give to Shinji the possibility to return in time (and it could justify the reason why appears the two bars at final of the title that I think they mean repeat again, again and "etc.")... Just some thoughts...
"Hoping that Shinji could finally penetrate the wall of Jericho..."

I only speak Spanish. Sorry for grammatical mistakes in my posts...

So is the current verdict that 3.0+1.0 is the subtitle of the movie or is there going to be a subtitle that makes a statement?

And in my opinion that possibility it's which have most chances

And I don't expect "3.0 + 1.0" to be te definitive title. A declaration of intention maybe, just a hint, and never linked with time loops or anything like that.

I dont' agree with your title theory. The movies are too Shinjicentric.

Wasn't that where one of the Adams supposedly landed? One got blown up to the moon, so Japan isn't really a stretch after that.

It's replacing "Final".

Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance
Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo
Evangelion [s]Final[/s] 3.0+1.0: You ____ (Not) ____

The subtitle, if there is one, has not yet been revealed.
