This is a really old school show the way it is set up, pays homage to classics and how the heads that are behind the project work. MotW is an integral part of the concept and doesn't necessarily mean not entertaining. I just like to remind that at least half of TTGL was like that too.

No, wrong. Downtime is essential. Filler is non-essential by definition. It is the tv-only arcs in Naruto, not the moments between battles in SW. When I worry about KlK being filler for the next ten eps I don't mean I worry about it having a bunch of character development or whatever, I mean I worry about it having a bunch of meaningless battles that don't advance the story. There's a huge difference there. I would like to see some character development before things get moved to the next level, but I really don't see how fighting the whole school will do that. Hopefully Trigger will prove me wrong.

Kinda like Magma Diver

Magma Diver was essential to explain why the whole Shinji/Asuka dynamic unfolded as it did. It was not filler.

There wasn't any filler I can think of in Gurren Lagann so I wouldn't worry. Ditto for Eva, despite unfair accusations Magma Diver and ep 10 sometimes get.
ran1: Oh gosh this sentence gave me an internet boner. You're so tsundere.
Mugwump: Goddamn it, Xard! Take me in your arms, you magnificent sex god bastard!
And don't forget to wear the Ran mask.
Eva Yojimbo: You really are the Otaku equivalent of a Catholic and Jew rolled up into one giant dakimakura of guilt.
Gob Hobblin: Sanctimonious, subtly racist, vaguely misogynist, somehow says something while at the same time saying...nothing, really, at all....

Nice, Xard. That's nice.

By definition beating Star Uniforms will already advance the story given the pact between Ryuuko and Satsuki.

This has got to be the most gainaxy non gainax anime I have ever seen. Also does anyone else thing Ryukos teacher seems like some weird merging of Coach From Gunbuster with either Touga or Akio from Utena?

So there are Sukeban Deka homages, which Episode 1 reminded me of so I went and watched the OVA to confirm. From that these are the parallels:

-Ryuko and Saki use a unique weapon (half scissor blade and yo-yo).
-Ryuko is trying to find out who killed her father whereas Saki goes undercover at the school (which she was expelled from) as part of a deal with the police to spare her mother from execution.
-Both have a faculty member help them (Aikuro and the vice principal, Numa).
-Both are quickly befriended by another female student and the latter is targeted (Mako/Junko).
-The antagonists' families are wealthy.
-The antagonist's parent is in a position of influence over the school. In SD's case it's the Mizuchi sisters' father.
-There are Four Devas in both cases. For SD it is 4 male students whose boss is the middle Mizuchi sister, Ayumi.

I would rate the SD OVA as 7/10 and think it could have been longer as the manga went to 22 volumes. Oddly it has only the 1 anime adaptation vs. 3 TV series and 3 movies.

Episode 4 was insane. A weird, wild anime Looney Tunes episode. Loved the casting of the voice actress who played Yoko from Gurren-Lagann.

Isn't the reason it feels like Gainax the fact that Trigger is basically the entire creative team from post Anno Gainax?

At this point it looks like Gainax is just making standard Shonen stuff now that the majority of its old creative team has jumped ship, so I'm guessing the standards we once put on them should be put on Trigger now.

^There was Stella C3. Not bad, but not great. Average.

What I liked about this ep was that the weekly villain wasn't obvious (to me, maybe some of you had your suspicions) until they revealed themselves.

Obvious villain was obvious (you could tell as soon as she started playing up her injuries), but the show was fun regardless.

It's getting to a point where talking about how awesome trigger is just feels like I'm sucking their cock, and yet they keep giving me new reasons to do it.

Let me tell you two useful pieces of information

One: That was Ryuuko's mother and she is trapped in Junketsu like her father turned into Senketsu
Two: The students were assaulted by brooms and there was only one girl cleaning the bathrooms that day

Tsumugu's haircut reminds me of Rufio from Hook, although it's not a triple mohawk.

If that's the case, what would be Tsumugu's connection to Ryuuko's mother? He seemed pretty desperate in that flashback, as if he loved the woman being consumed.
