(I didn't see a thread for this film, so if I missed it then just feel free to delete this thread and point me in the right direction.)

I really enjoyed this movie. It was made by the same folks who made Summer Wars, so if you liked that movie then you'll enjoy this one too. And if you don't like that movie then wtf is wrong with you? ;)

Spoiler, talking about the ending:

SPOILER: Show
I'm a bit wtf'd at the ending. Of course, I think most people were hoping for a traditional happy ending where Chiaki would stay with Makoto during her time, but that's not what happened. He goes back, and it's a very bittersweet ending.

From what I understand, the most traditional interpretation of the ending is that Makoto will "be with Chiaki" by making sure that he'll be able to see the painting in the future, by restoring it and ensuring that it is safe.

Of course, then there's also the horrifically dark interpretation that Chiaki is really a time-traveling con artist who tricks young girls (Makoto, previously her aunt) into becoming art restorers.
Here's a link for that read.

Anyway, what did you think, particularly of the ending?

It's a real sweet movie, very good, but it's not top-notch. The ending ruined it for me (a little). Also, the german translation added one-two really meaning-bending lines into this, which isn't the movie's fault but it made me really angry.

Yeah, this pretty much sums up how I feel about it.

I loved it its entirety. I don't see why the ending would detract from it, it was a beautiful and poignant conclusion.

Much better than Summer Wars, whose virtual world scenes I didn't care for (family stuff was good though).

I considered starting a Mamoru Hosoda General thread recently since I love all his stuff and his work at Toei seems to be overlooked. I think I just forgot to make the thread. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was what got me into his stuff, but I haven't seen it in a pretty long time.

The thing that I remember really sticking with me is how Chiaki's real motivation is only ever insinuated in the movie and the ending is completely different when you realize what it is.

I remember reading that after seeing the film first time and going "oh god what, why does this make sense" but last time I rewatched the film (last spring) I thought the interpretation didn't hold up together anymore the way I thought it did.

Now it's been again 6 months so I can't remember the details of whys and hows of my conclusion.

Really liked it when I saw it, should rewatch sometime. I loved the story and the art style. Truly one of the modern animes that was actually good.

It's been a while since I've seen the film, so I would appreciate an elaboration on this please if you don't mind.

'mmm

The theory kind of falls apart the moment it starts since it makes the (completely unsupported and in face of franchise in general false) assumption Chiaki is the same guy from original novel - a premise that makes or breaks the theory.

That would depend on if you consider it to be a true sequel to the original.

It is true sequel to original. That was one of its commercial hooks in Japan and the aunt is the original heroine.

how much more real could sequel get than sharing the continuity?
