REBUILD OF EVANGELION
ACT 1: Ensemble
Episode 1: Gathering

Clattering filled the air. The cane had slipped from the side of the seat and banged against the tile floor. Sound reverberated around the vast chamber before settling once again. With a sigh the man rubbed his leg. Reaching down, he picked up the cane again and hooked it around the arm of his chair. No one even looked up any more. The slip, the clatter, the sigh and retrieval were daily routine by this point. He was a middle-aged man in a dark suit. His dark brown hair streaked with lines of grey, intelligent dark eyes staring out at the world around him. He would have been handsome for his age if not for the deep creases and dark rings about his eyes. Looking at the report on his desk, his sight flicked back up to the main screen.

“Status report Doctor.” he asked, his voice hoarse. Another man stepped forward. He was taller, gangly, with a half-smoked cigarette hanging from his lips. A dishevelled mop of blonde hair reaching to his shoulders. He took a puff of his cigarette.
“In terms of pilots and units, the progress is as follows Commander. All pilots and units are accounted for with the exception of Unit-02 and Mark.06, both of which are not due to arrive for some time. Apparently Berlin is having trouble getting clearance to release the Unit and Tabgha is behind in construction.” the doctor explained dully, glancing back at his superior.
“What's being done with them?” the Commander replied, rubbing the bridge of his nose. The doctor hesitated, unsure of which he meant.
“Well, while all are accounted for, we've yet to actually receive all of them. So far we're prepping Unit-00 and Unit-01 for active use since they're our resident Evas. Unit-03 has experienced turbulence due to a storm on the way in, it will arrive shortly. 04 is having... Issues.”
“Issues?” The Commander arched an eyebrow.
“Uh, well, the pilot has been a little.. Picky. For now we've bolted it down in Bay Three, but she keeps hassling the technicians. We're probably going to keep that one on the active register for now. Other than that the Evas are all being put into storage to coincide with the Vatican Treaty. Provisional Unit-05 and Unit-07 are already being stored, but Unit-α is causing some confusion.” The doctor continued.
“Don't make me wait Doctor, just get on with it.” An edge appeared in the Commander's voice.
“Well, the odd thing is, it's already sealed. Eden Base delivered it to us prepacked in a block of Bakelite. The techs don't know whether to seal it or defrost it Sir.” the doctor gave a chuckle. There was an uncomfortable silence.
“Have them lower it into one of the vats. Couldn't cause it any more harm. Anything else?” The Commander rose slowly from his seat. He had only just sat down, but his immediate return to motion was also routine by now.
“Well, there is the matter of the pilots...” The doctor answered, his cigarette burning out.

The door to the Command Centre opened, the Commander walking out, leaning on his cane, the doctor following closely.
“I can't advise this for your leg...”
“Continue your report.” his voice echoed in the empty corridor.
“Fine, what do I know, I'm just a doctor... We've started rounding up the pilots. We're getting them together in the conference room. So far Shirou Karigane is being escorted there by his brothers an-!”
“Karigane, technicians right?” The Commander interrupted. The doctor checked his hand-held.
“Yes Sir, twins, they're the pilot of Unit-α's older brothers. They're bringing him to the conference room. Shiori is already there along with the pilot of Unit-07, Qi, both under supervision. Unit-04's pilot is being removed forcibly from Bay Three according to the latest news and Unit-05's pilot, R, Rock, uh... Katla, has been informed. Unit-03's pilot was sent ahead of his Unit, but he's still a little behind schedule, he's in transit now. Finally, um, your Son, Sir...” the doctor paused, unsure of how to continue.
“What is his status?” The Commander continued evenly, not breaking his stride.
“He's arrived at the base Sir, he's on his way, but he still has no idea why he's here. You'll be addressing all the pilots, correct?” the doctor tried to broach the subject.

The Commander stopped in his tracks. Turning his head slightly to look towards the other.
“... No, I'm leaving orientation up to you.” he explained, picking up his step once again.
“Uh, what, you must be joking! I'm no good with kids, you've seen me interact, I can't even talk to... Gah! What the hell Owen, you aren't even going to talk to the kid?!” The doctor's patience had worn out. Throwing down his cigarette, he glared at the back of the other man.
“No Johann, there is a time and a place for such things, this isn't it. You will handle their orientation and then delegate them to Kiyoshi.I have other things to attend to.” Passing into the next corridor, an electronic door slid shut behind the Commander, leaving Johann alone with his thoughts. Cursing under his breath, he marched off towards the conference room.

(Alrighty, you all read that I hope, your positions have been laid out with a few different perspectives here and there. Basically just take it as your character going from somewhere on or off base to the conference room. I decided to create a bit of staggering here so we don't just end up with an instant mess of everyone trying to talk to one another at once. Be mindful of others' posts and try to have fun. ^_^ )

"....this is going to be a great vacation..." Said a brown haired boy sarcastically to himself in the empty waiting room as he pulled the headphones around his neck to his ears. While trying to figure out on what to listen to on his MP3 player, the boy started to considered that this vacation was going to very disappointing. Then again, compared to anything else his father had done for him would be worse than this. Complaining about this was pretty pointless, but it felt good to get the negative thoughts out of his system.

After thirty seconds of browsing, the boy finally picked an appropriate album to listen to. "...Daydream Nation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVwJMOtfJbU)...that feels right." Hitting the play button, streams of music flooded his head while he began to consider his day so far.

_____________________________________________________________

"OK Isaac, I want to you enjoy your time in Tokyo-3 and behave yourself.", said an older woman while straightening Isaac's jacket. "Just don't get in trouble with other girls, OK? I've seen the way girls look at you. I don't want any grand children to take care of.....unless the girl is REALLY cute." She said with a chuckle as she pulled her hand to her mouth to muffle her laughter.

"Ha, right! I'm only going to be gone for a month. I seriously doubt I'll even meet any girls out there..." Isaac stammered while recoiling from his Aunt Kagome. Not that I wouldn't mind that. Isaac confessed to himself while imagining a bunch of Japanese school girls fawning over him. The only reason he thought about that vision was thanks to some of the Japanese anime he watched with a bunch of his friends in Phoenix.

A man standing next to Aunt Kagome took a step forward and rested his hand on Isaac's shoulder. "The only reason why your Aunt mentions that is because she was a bit...forward when we met in high school."

"Oh come on Izama! You practically tried to swoon me by playing the piano. Don't you remember when you used that lame pickup line? 'Are you a fermata? Because I want to hold you.'..." Kagome said while playfully hitting her husband in the arm.

They all started to laugh as they enjoyed each other's company in the airport. It was another hot day in Pheonix Arizona, but thanks to the AC unit's blowing in the sweet cold air, it was more bearable. They continued to talk to one another as Izama briefly told the story of how Kagome and him met in High School. Their conversation came to an end as the intercom system turned on saying, "Flight to Tokyo-3 will now be boarding."

The three figures stared at each other for a moment and each hugged one another before the departure. Kagome began to get teary eyed in front of Isaac while placing a kiss on his forehead. "We love you Isaac. Please don't hesitate to call us if you need anything." Giving another big hug to Isaac, she took a step back and smiled at Isaac. "We'll see you in a month."

Izama gave Isaac a hug as well and grinned at him to say his goodbye. "I didn't know your father that well, but I assume he always had your best interest's in mind. Give him a chance. You might actually like him." That was a lie. Izama didn't care too much for Owen Kenny and didn't know what his sister found in him. The only thing he was grateful for was that Isaac came into their life. Being unable to have their own children, Isaac was practically a son to him. "Just do me some favors. Have a good time and visit your mothers grave for both of us. It is somewhere in Tokyo-3. I'm sure your father knows where to find it."

"Alright. I promise." Isaac took a few steps back as he headed towards his departure gate. Turning around one last time, he gave a grin and waved at both his Aunt and Uncle. "I'll see you guys later...I love you." Kagome began to tear up even more and buried her head into Izama's shoulder.

"Women right?" Izama said with a smile while consoling his wife as they watched Isaac board his plane to Tokyo-3.

Why was Aunt Kagome so sad? It's not like I'll see them in a few weeks.

_____________________________________________________________

Halfway through the album, Isaac started to examine the room he was lead into and told to 'remain here unless told otherwise' by the suited men who were titled as the section 2 agents. "Why did my dad have me escorted by those guys? I mean, what is he doing and since when did he become a Commander? So many damn questions..." Pausing his music, Isaac stood up in the room and began to think about his arrival to the Nerv HQ.

_____________________________________________________________

Stepping off the airplane, Isaac began to walk through the airport for Tokyo-3. It was much bigger than the one in Phoenix and was full of what seemed to be thousands of people. Phoenix was big, but not this big. While walking around, he started to follow the prompts that said where to pick up his luggage. Lucky for him, he was able to read, write and speak Japanese. Having grown up with his aunt and uncle (who were both fluent in English and Japanese) taught him both of the languages when he was really young.

After eventually finding his luggage, Isaac felt a tap on his shoulder as two suited me wearing shades and ear pieces starred down at him with a blank expression on their face. "Mr. Kenny?"

Isaac a bit taken back cleared his throat and nodded at the two taller men. "Yes? W-ho are you guys?" The two suited men looked about the same height. One was obviously older than the other, but their poise we both the same. Unreadable and slightly terrifying.

The younger agent put his finger to the ear piece and muttered something into the receiver and then turned back to Isaac. "Come with us Mr. Kenny. We are ordered to bring you to Commander Kenny." With that said they started to walk in a direction that was towards the exit of the airport.

What? Commander Kenny?!? What the hell is my Dad doing? Isaac followed the two men and started to feel very uneasy about coming here. I should of stayed home. This was a bad idea. The two suited men's strides were much faster than his and they strode in unison as they parted the sea of people towards the exit. "Ummm, where is my father? Why couldn't he come pick me up himself?" Isaac said faintly unsure if they even heard him.

"Hold all your questions Mr. Kenny. There will be a time and place to ask your questions. We were instructed to come pick you up and bring you to Nerv HQ."

Nerv HQ? What the hell is going on?"...Alright? I mean you can't even tell me 'Oh! He was too busy to come pick you up.' or something like that?"

"We were told to pick you up and that's it." The older man said with a hint of annoyance from all of Isaac's questions.

As they left the airport, a sleek black car with two other agents near the front and back of the car both patiently waited for their target to get in the car. When Isaac approached the car, one of the agents opened the door and gave the same stoic expression each of the other agents gave and said to Isaac, "Take a seat Mr. Kenny. We will take you to Nerv HQ now." With that, Isaac followed the direction given and sat uncomfortably in the luxurious car.

Tokyo-3 was even bigger than he could of even imagined. The streets were full of life and was something he has never seen before. The car took many different turns and eventually went down a tunnel that seemed to last an eternity. The car stopped for a moment and began to descend quickly and the dark abyss seemed to disappear instantly as they arrived in the Geofront.

Isaac was amazed. "A Geofront? What the hell is my dad up to?" It was an impressive sight. Living in Arizona, he was accustomed to the desert environment which was completely different then what he was currently witnessing. His Uncle Izama told Isaac the landscape in Japan was vastly different then what he was used to, but this was very unexpected. After a while, the decent eventually stopped and they arrived at the Nerv HQ.

_____________________________________________________________

...Then I was escorted to this room to wait....and that brings me to where I'm at right now. They said Isaac thought to himself as he put his headphones around his ears to continue listening to the album. Maybe his father was too busy and intended to met up with him, but as a Commander he was unable to leave...or maybe Isaac was making up hopeless excuses for this own father. So many questions and very few answers. Letting out a deep sigh, Isaac ran his fingers through his hair and decided that there was no use in trying to figure out what was going on. Reaching the end of the album, Isaac came to another predicament that was much easier to resolve. Finding a different album to listen to.

Isaac turned his head towards the door and a suited man entered the room saying, "Mr. Kenny, follow me." Isaac stood up and followed the agent for a while and was eventually led into a different room. As the door opened, Isaac saw two other kids his same age sitting patiently in the much nicer room compared to his previous location. "Wait here until advised other wise." With that the agent took his leave and Isaac look at the other two children.

The boy looked so foreign. He has never seen someone like him before. Grey hair, and....red eyes? How unusual. The girl looked normal compared to the boy, but why was their kids his own age in the room? Were they his dad's children too? Did his father have many different "wives" and is now forming some sort of family reunion? That was highly unlikely...but he has been wrong about everything so far today. Clearing his through Isaac gave a friendly wave and stared at the other two children. "Hi...er..my name is Isaac Kenny. Could you please explain what is going on? I just got here and-" Isaac cut himself off and realized that they might not know what's happening too. Other people have problems too. Don't be so selfish. Isaac proceeded to talk anyway. "...and I'm here to met my father, Owen Kenny...or I guess he is known as Commander Kenny. Anyway, I'm sorry if you're just as lost as me, but I'm just asking if you know what's happening." Isaac waited for a response and felt like he was in for a real treat today.

Shiori leaned back in her chair, extremely bored and extremely annoyed. When a couple of G-Men had burst into her room earlier, she had been in the middle of sending a message to the board. Their arrival could have jeopardized everything, but they weren't too bright for intelligence officers. They'd escorted her to this room and left. That had been an hour ago.
She glanced at the pilot of Unit-07 - Jia Chi, or something like that? He'd arrived yesterday, but this was the first time she'd seen him. It would be the perfect opportunity to develop a read on the new guy.
She got up and made a beeline towards him.
"Hi," she said. "I'm the First Child, Shiori Takatsuki. You must be Jia?"

The girl was still clad in an odd gray and yellow plugsuit even after being forcibly removed from the bay. She struggled against the Nerv agents, but it was pointless. She was 14, and they were two fully-grown men. She was tall enough that they couldn’t lift her into the air like she had seen in a cartoon when she was younger and leave her feet dangling, but she was slight enough in build that she was unable to resist. She fiercely struggled for several more seconds, giving up when absolutely nothing was achieved. The two men didn’t even regard her surrender, continuing to frog-march her down one of Nerv’s many passageways. This treatment continued for several more meters, until Tokei began slapping the arm of the man next to her.

“You can stop that now, I’m already coming with you,” she snapped. The man ignored her, maintaining a firm grip on her arm. Tokei sighed with exasperation. “Let go! I’m sure that 14 year old girls can easily be detained by Japanese security forces.” Her outburst evoked nothing from her guards. Tokei sunk into silence, brooding.

Nerv had come to collect her four days ago. They had walked into her pseudo-office without even knocking, shoved a slip of paper in front of her, and demanded that she go with them. Hardly the way to treat an Eva pilot. Tokei had demanded a phone, and had been denied until she produced a card from her desk that she had been handed when she was seven and told never to lose. The agents looked at the card, and wordlessly handed her a phone. Tokei had forcibly requested that Unit-04 and all parts shipments be rerouted to Tokyo-3’s Nerv branch. Her request had been granted, and she had consented to leave.

And now they wouldn’t even let her test the damn thing. The Unit was primed and activated, but they had stuck a signal plug in it! Tokei continued to mutter foul language under her breath, cursing Nerv staff and protocol before she arrived in front of a rather nondescript door. One of the security members reached out and swiped a card to open it, the other unceremoniously propelling her into the room. The door was closed behind her, giving a little click as it shut. Tokei glanced at the three children in front of her, all males and only one woman. Tokei took a chair at the table. She folded her arms, waiting for someone to speak.

Before a word could be said from Isaac's question, another person walked through the door wearing...a very tight suit of some kind. Isaac stared at her and felt his fourteen eyes began to wonder. Blushing slightly, Isaac took in a breath and noticed that she was very tall for a girl, especially for their age. Still standing among the other children, he took a few steps toward the circular table and took a seat waiting for some kind of response. Isaac looked at the tall girl Tokei and with a faint blush opened his mouth. "Hi, I'm Isaac Kenny...ummm,"his eyes began to wonder," what are we doing here and... What are you wearing? If you don't mind me asking that is! I'm just not exactly sure what 'this' place is or anything." Stop talking you idiot. You're making a fool of yourself! Isaac thought while averting eyes nervously around the room.

Shiori looked up from Jia. She hadn't noticed the new boy, but now there was someone else with him - a girl.

She sat down and leaned forward, her chin resting on her hands. Observation, that was the key.

Tokei barely glanced at the stuttering boy. "It's called a plugsuit. Pilots wear them. You don't know this?"

Qi had been sitting quietly across from the other pilot. He didn't know who she was, he hadn't been told to do anything but wait, so he did. As he tried to think what to say, the girl opposite had suddenly gotten up and approached.
"Hi," she said. "I'm the First Child, Shiori Takatsuki. You must be Jia?" He was taken back for a second before smiling in return.
"Yes, but you can call me Chi if you like. It's what everyone in Golgotha calls me." he replied happily. It was nice that he didn't have to be the first one to speak.

The doors slid open and another child walked in. He looked fairly normal, if not a bit distracted.
"Hi...er..my name is Isaac Kenny. Could you please explain what is going on? I just got here and-" he halted for a moment, perhaps thinking over his next words. "...and I'm here to met my father, Owen Kenny...or I guess he is known as Commander Kenny. Anyway, I'm sorry if you're just as lost as me, but I'm just asking if you know what's happening." Isaac seemed a lot less confident than Shiori, was he another pilot? If he was, he didn't seem to know it. Well it was not his place to explain it, so Qi just smiled at him.
"Hello" Qi attempted in his best English accent. The boy had already spoken Japanese so it was probably pointless, but still, it was the thought that counted, right? "I'm Jié Qi. This is Shiori Takatsuki. It's a pleasure to meet you, Isaac." he said happily. Getting up from his seat, he was about to walk over to the new arrival when the door opened again, a girl in a plugsuit being shoved unceremoniously into the room. She seemed to be angry, taking a seat, folding her arms and staring at them, as if expecting something.
"... Hello, I'm Jié Qi, this is Shiori Takatsuki and Isaac Kenny. Nice to meet you." he chirped, indicating the others when necessary, their names already committed to memory. If this were a combat situation, he'd of killed all three of them and called it a day already, but he hadn't been ordered to do so, so pleasantries were called for, and while that was Qi's preferred option, it certainly wasn't the easier one.

Having hearing a response from Jié, Isaac provided him with friendly smile. "It's nice to meet you too."

Isaac stared back at the girl and began to scratch the back of his head. "A plug suit? Aren't you a little young to be a pilot? I mean not that you're not capable of piloting, I just..," Isaac paused for a moment trying to think on what to say so he didn't sound like an idiot." Just haven't met someone so young to be a pilot. What kind of ship do you pilot?"

Tokei reached out with an arm, drumming her fingers on the table. "I've got Unit-04 in bay three right now, with technicians that aren't even familiar with it swarming over the mechanics. I'm set to run tests on its current configuration in a few hours, but it might be days if this nonsense of pulling people out of entry plugs keeps up." She looked at the boy again. "I'm assuming you have a unit as well."

"An Evangelion unit," she said. "I think you'll be seeing one soon enough - sorry, they're somewhat difficult to describe."

Shiori smiled.

"You must be Commander Kenny's son?" she said to the boy. "He talks about you a lot, you know."

Isaac was shocked from the news about his dad. He was never sure what his dad felt about him, but to hear that made this trip a bit worth it. Regardless of the fact that he knew nothing to what was going on, his dad seemed to somewhat care about him. For once he actually felt happy about his dad. "Really? He does? Thank you." Ignoring Tokei's remark, he recalled what Shiori said and when back to what she said. "Evangelion? What is that?"

Shirou thankfully wasn't tired as he stepped off the V-TOL clad in his casual wear - the past few days he had taken it upon himself to re-acclimate his sleep schedule to match Tokyo-3 time. He had been wondering where to go next when a familiar pair of voices rang out in the Queen's English.

"Well, if it isn't -"
"- our favourite baby brother!"

Shirou grinned as his brothers Hikaru and Kaworu tromped across the tarmac, but was replaced by a joking pout as he replied, "I'm your only baby brother, guys."

"Not that it doesn't stop you from being our favourite," Hikaru answered.
"Yeah, Rei has had a bit of a stick up his arse since Nerv recruited us all," Kaworu added.
"Wormed our way in, more like," Hikaru retorted.

Shirou was a little dismayed at this thought - his eldest brother hadn't wished to leave England for several reasons, happening to include... Well, he wasn't going to think about that, no sir!

"Walk with us," Kaworu said.

The trio headed towards the waiting tram on the far side of the landing pad.

"So, what are you guys doing here? I was told an escort was going to take me to a conference room," Shirou stated.

"We are the escort," the twins echoed in unison.

"We heard the pilots were gathering," started Kaworu.
"- so we pulled some strings -"
"- and here we are."

"Oh, oh yeah! Dad says 'hello'. Only it was more like 'Son, I want you to clap your brothers on the back with raucous laughter and a mug of beer for me'," said Shirou.

He smiled at his brothers short barks of laughter and was about to continue when the tunnel opened out into a wide, lit underground expanse. His jaw dropped in awe as he pressed himself to the window.

"Oh wow! So this is the Geofront," he exclaimed, taking in all the detail he could. Eden base was also impressive, but this probably took the cake and ate it too.

"You get used to it when you come here on a work-week basis," noted Hikaru.
"But it is always impressive when you stop and think about it," Kaworu added thoughtfully.

Hikaru and Kaworu "serenaded" him with all sorts of technical details about the base as he looked on in awe as they traversed moving platforms and cavernous expanses. When they reached a cat walk, he attempted to swing over the edge and cross hand-over-hand, but he was discouraged immediately by several techs, his brothers included.

"Haha, dad said you liked to climb around the base," said Kaworu.
"But unfortunately regulations are a tad more strict here," stated Hikaru.
"We'll take you climbing sometime. There are plenty of mountains around here."
Hikaru started to list mountains - "Futago, Asama..."

_______

He was still going when they reached the conference room.

Kaworu interrupted him - "This is the place! We'll catch up with you later little bro."
"Yeah," said Hikaru, "we need to get back to Unit 04. The pilot was throwing a fit about it earlier. Not like we haven't seen the specifications or blueprints for each individual part. Anyway, take it easy Shirou!"

Shirou waved as the two walked away, and prepared himself. Switching his mentality to Japanese speech, he pressed the button and stepped into the conference room.

"Hi everyo-," he started, thoughts derailed when he noticed Tokei. Given her height and uh... proportions he drew all the wrong conclusions about her age.

"Uh, ma'am, I appreciate that a woman like yourself would want a plugsuit for um... things." He coughed with an embarrassed, sheepish look on his face. "But wouldn't it be a little more appropriate to wear standard regulation uniform around the base?"

"Right." Still unsure why his father exactly brought him here, but he had the faint feeling this wasn't a vacation anymore. Remembering what Tokei said, he stared back at her feeling a bit angry. Commander's pet? Who does this girl think she is? he thought as stared at the other children. "I'm done asking questions about me, I'm sure they will be answered sooner or later. What about you guys? Why are you here exactly? Are you all pilots of the Ev...Evangelion as well like her?" Isaac said with a hint of disdain.

Tokei shot a scathing look at the newcomer. "I was trying to run some tests on the new equipment that was shipped here, but some of the security goons dragged me out of my entry plug. They didn't exactly give me time to change."

Shirou blushed and stammered. "I-I'm sorry. I mean, I'm used to being around adults and I thought... I mean, you kind of look like one. D-don't get me wrong, you look great. I uh... um."

He bowed and stuck out his right hand, mixing up customs in his mental hurry.

"I'm Shirou Karigane. Uh, I mean, I'm Karigane Shirou. Th-that is, my family name is Karigane like 'Wild Goose' and my given name is Shirou with the characters for 'snake' and 'son'. I mean, I was a kid in Britain, but I grew up in Japan and then my dad and I were assigned to Eden base, so I'm not sure which naming convention we're using..." And he realized he was babbling.

"Uh, well, it's good to meet you all," he exclaimed, still bowing and offering his hand.

"Pleased to meet you," Shiori said. "You can all sit down, now - if we're all being gathered, the Commander must have something to say to us."

She took a seat at the foot of the table, where she was able to see everyone in the room.
