Flashing web-ad-like emote always on the post-writing screen

Here's something that's been sort of bothering me for a while, and I'm going to just go ahead and make a post about it already.

See this?: :w00: See how it is constantly flashing and moving like some obnoxious web ad? Well it's always, ALWAYS sitting right there to the left, flashing, endlessly, in every post-writing screen.

Why is it that whenever anyone is writing a post, it has to be sitting there blinking on and off like a freaking timer. Is it really that essential to have an ever moving reminder that, yes, emoticons exist, and yes, we can insert them into posts!

Can't a non-moving emote be put over there instead? Do I really have to Adblock this thing? If anyone actually uses it in a post I'd like to see it, so I'd rather not. It's finally gotten maddening and I just had to say something. There's got to be a better way!

For some reason, it seems that you're getting the Extended Smilies rather than the default phpBB group in the emoticons window. The WOOT smiley was moved out from the defaults deliberately.

Me too, it doesn't bother me but if I could have the default ones in its place it would certainly be better.

I was getting that smiley until some moments ago but now I see 20 different smilies.

That's hilarious. Somehow the default forum emoticons were set to "Admins Only" while the woo emote (which should have been removed from circulation entirely) was set to "Everyone". Those were supposed to be flipped. Looking through the posting.php code, it looks like if the user who's posting doesn't have permission to use a set of emoticons, it goes to the next category that the user can use, which happened to be the exiled category with a single emote of the woo.

Should be fixed now, wonder how long it's been set to that.

So, probably an unguarded mouse click on my part while setting up the Q sub-forum.

I had the same thing, but I wasn't really bothered by it. I always did wonder why the "extended" smilies category only had one emoticon in it.... It's way more convenient the way it is now, though.

Yeah, I think that it's been like this from before the release of Q. Anyway I agree with riffraff, it's more convenient like this.

Yeah it was like that for as long as I can remember. I wonder what the rationale behind it was (though it never bothered me)

I'm likely going to be the only one who feels things are actually worse like this. Then again, it's just a first impression and the new arrangement does seem very practical.

A year or two back, an admin moved :w00: into its own separate category (it was removed from public viewing because people were abusing it) which should have been admin only. And when another admin finally made that category public viewing, :w00: was still separate.

The setting was like this for at least the past year or two, kinda funny how nobody realized the admin viewing vs everyone settings were reversed until now.

It's even more funny that apparently people stopped abusing :w00: even though it was still available. BTW, isn't it possible to reintroduce it? I don't understand if it's intentional but regular users can't see it now.

It wasn't available at first, because it was entirely removed from the list, not even the animated gif was on the server anymore. At some point someone added it back in and put it in its own category, that's probably when the permissions got screwed up. It's intentional that regular users can't see it, it shouldn't render, and just be the words "woo", this was the point when it got added back in but set to be private.

That reminds me, are we ever going to see 'twin guns' ever again? It's not like TDSA is around to abuse it.
