However....at some mysterious point between 1990 and 1996, Anno indefinitely abandoned the "clean shaven" look to give himself a more "dignified appearance" into what is now his trademark Artist's Goatee. While admittedly badass in it's own right, it has grown rather old.

THE BURNING QUESTION:

Should Anno give himself the ol' facial feng shui for old time's sake?

I swear, there needs to be a Tokusatsu Sentai series starring Hideaki Anno, Mamoru Oshii Go Nagai, Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hayao Miyazaki as the "Dai-Anime-Ojii-San-Dan", complete with hilariously bad special effects and theatic special powers/weapons for each Ojii-Ranger.

Anno could have an Ultraman figure that turns into a crossbow that actually fires crosses, Miyazaki could turn into a plane, Nagai could have gatling rocket launcher boobs on his spandex suit, Oshii could have a car that transforms into a mecha basset hound, and Tomino could just have the ability to make everything really depressing.

Why is there not a whole thread about this idea? I would write for this show in a heartbeat.

Anno and Oshii should have a combination attack where everything freezes at a dynamic angle and all sound stops except for ambient noises. This continues until their opponent succumbs to boredom and gives up.

Anno, Tomino and Nagai have a combination attack that they never use, because it would cause three successive apocalypses to occur.

Satoshi Kon can be the loner sixth member, who they don't like having around because his very presence warps reality and generally confuses the hell out of everyone.

ON TOPIC: Boy that sure is some facial hair Anno has/does not have at given times.

Clean-shaven Anno in suit and tie looks much so more like a younger Tony Blair than a younger Hideaki Anno that it's not surprising that the earlier picture is hard to recognise too.
