The reason I ask is because, despite everyone assuming that Mari's referring to the old Rei here, Rei Q's original is in fact Yui. Sure, Mari could be out of the loop in regards to the whole Yui clone business, but that doesn't seem too likely. A lot of dirt about Nerv, including the clones, had to have been found out by the people who would later go on to form Wille during the timeskip. And even if not every Wille member is privy to that knowledge, Mari has always seemed to have an air about her that suggests that she knows more about what's going on at any given moment than the average character.

Geez, I never even thought of that

I mean... from what we have seen, Mari never met Rei.

There's nothing about the original Japanese that specifies who Mari is talking about, no. Could have been Yui, Rei 1, or Rei 2 (whom Mari briefly dealt with on the battlefield).

Rei II saved her life by pushing her away from the oncoming N² missile blast, taking it herself, even though Rei didn't know Mari.
That automatically makes her friendlier than the human drone Rei Q is in Mari's eyes.

Good catch! I don't know why that hasn't occurred to me before. That seems to be the most likely answer at this point.

There is a theory that Mari was talking about Rei (original = Rei 1, I'd guess) over here. But other than various theories, nobody knows for sure whom Mari meant.

Every time I hear the "original" line I think of Rei II because of a rejected draft in the 2.0 CRC of the Zeruel fight where Mari and Rei get a lot more melee teamwork done and Mari refers to her as Rei-chan.

Sure it's rejected material but it's a fun idea to have them had interacted more.

This will probabaly be completely disproven in Final but that's still far off.

I tend to think of Rei 2 myself, but I do like the Minna no Eva fan theory (post above yours).

Again, here's a potential area where how the Japanese was translated could have a significant impact on the meaning. In the English dub, after Rei gets om nom nom'd by the Angel, Mari simply refers to her as "the pilot" of Unit 00. It would seem that if she knew Rei, she would've referred to her by name. And in Japanese, she would've almost certainly referred to her by name if she knew it... so does anybody know whether she does call her Rei in the Japanese dialog, or whether Rei's just referred to as "a pilot"?

If she does refer to Rei by name in the Japanese, then I'd say that strengthens the already more likely idea that Mari was referring to Rei 1 or 2 by "original" in 3.33. But if she just refers to her as "a pilot" in 2.22, then the idea that she's referring to Yui in 3.33 becomes a little more plausible.

Rei II saved her life by pushing her away from the oncoming N² missile blast, taking it herself, even though Rei didn't know Mari.
That automatically makes her friendlier than the human drone Rei Q is in Mari's eyes.

That's assuming she knew it was Rei II. Rei didn't know Mari, and from the English dub at least, it seems that Mari didn't know Rei either. Of course, it's very likely she learned of who her savior was sometime during the time skip, but we don't know that for sure either.

Mari had 14 years to learn the name of the pilot who saved her life and to know more about what kind of person she was, especially since she was a previous teammate of Asuka(who's her teammate now) and apparently the main reason behind Shinji getting close to annihilate mankind with N3I.

Besides since an army of her clones later piloted Mark.09 and apparently made WILLE's life hell during the past decade and half, I think that everyone in the organization now know Rei's name!

Flash forward almost a year later: Since Funimation's been taking so long to release 3.0, I decided to send an email about this tonight. I'll let you know what they say!

You mean about Asuka's "Shut up and die" line toward Shinji in Lilith's Chamber?

Yep. Also decided to ask about the "working closely with Khara" deal. Doubt they'll reply about that, but worth a shot.

EDIT: No reply as of a week later: Wednesday July 2nd 2014. :irked:

Since this thread was just bumped (the content split/merged), news about khara working on Funi's 3.33 translation is way back from August, see here for discussion: http://forum.evageeks.org/thread/17039/Khara-Subs-for-333/

This thread was for EGF's Github translation project (for the camrip and 3.33 BD-rip), so it's OLD stuff but still very handy for reference. ^_^

Official English subs from the Asian/HK release, everything that should be considered officially translated has been done since the original video release, so indeed thre´s some kind "holdup" with the Funimation thing, worth noting though, this subtitles spelled 3.0 in the title, so while it may sound in some way outdated, 3.33 does not have any script difference.
you can look for interesting things to note, some that I remember are:
some curious adaptations of the most misterious dialogues.

Thank you very much. I'm eager to look into it. The only question is, why haven't I thought about the Hong Kong release beforehand? Also, Link doesn't work for me, lol.

"Shut up and let me kill you!" - Asuka. There you go. Can we stop complaining about that line now?

No, but it will all be rectified later anyway when Shin rolls around and Asuka confesses her eternal love while giving Puppy-boy a sponge bath she'll also apologize for getting too angry in the heat of battle and saying things she shouldn't have said.
