Whether you've seen it or not, how does it make you feel? Unload in here!

BTW, if your post is more specific than general film reactions (e.g., solely about that eternal hot topic, Shinji's character arc, or Misato's treatment of him), PLEASE USE ONE OF THE EXISTING DEDICATED THREADS OR CREATE A NEW ONE.

Well, if you're looking for non-blogger reviews there's this: http://www.anikore.jp/anime_review/3424
For reference, the site is something of a Japanese language myanimelist.net.

Should probably keep real reviews in a separate place, so they don't get lost amidst the flood of second-hand reactions that are going to be inevitable until the film is internationally available.

There are lot of things I enjoy about 3.0:

1) I like the fact that it's less colorful than 2.0 and "grainy". It really helps in setting up the mood.

2) The mood itself. There was a time when I was concerned, that Rebuild would become too happy and actiony. This would make younger, casual anime fans get skewed idea on what Eva really is about (if they refused to watch the original). I'm glad that they're going to get trolled the way we got trolled in NGE.

3) I actually like most of the new stuff that we got (minus maybe EVA-09 design. They really went too far with that rocket :P). I especially like AAA-Wunder and dark plugsuits for Shinji, Kaworu and Rei.

4) Time skip really has potential to give us insane amounts of info on characters while using very little time. I don't know how well it does it, but it has the potential. Anno's style always was to put a lot of emotions/info into single shots. Just one look at new Misato's room may give us a LOT to talk about. I really hope we do get such informative shots.

5) I like that Asuka is alive and kickin' ;)

edit: Completely forgot about

6) The ending song. Playing it over and over again while reading this forum.

What I don't enjoy:

1) Lack of info on Asuka's and Mari's pasts. I hoped that by now I would get to know what's the deal with Asuka's doll or who exactly Mari is, what her motivation is etc. I'd also like them to have more screen time outside of combat/Entry Plug.

In general, the disconnect between 2.0 and 3.0 seems to be just too huge. It also doesn't help that I'm one of those people who wanted to have more character development in 2.0.

In general, it's better than I thought it would be and my appetite for watching it is huuuuuge. And to think I was a bit of antifan of 2.0...

Looking at Q from the outside, I'm ambivalent. It's a bold step to take things quite so far off the rails; but in synopsis at least, it comes over as try-too-hard f---------. I had wondered whether Q might tempt me to watch Ha, but what I've seen so far has left me sticking with my previous plan of waiting until I have the UK home video release of MUSICAL SYMBOL RIGHT REPEAT SIGN (U+1D107) -- which will probably be some time around my 60th birthday.

Looking at the artwork and what supposedly happens in the film, I feel like Anno's gone: "You know what? I'm bored of EVA. Lets do something else."
I was fine with the films branching off from the original story but it feels like it's branched off so much that it's starting to turn back on itself.
Hopefully watching the film will help feel better about it, but I feel the subtitle should be ' This is (not) Evangelion '

I think if this was the first film of the series instead of the third I'd like it more.

My reaction has gone through a few phases.

1. When I woke up Friday and checked the spoilers the ones that were going around were still the fake ones claiming Asuka was the last angel and that she died at the end. At this point I was in shock. I wasn't shocked, I wasn't surprised, because I had actually expected something like this and the eyepatch glowing in the preview only strengthened my expectations. I was in shock, I was numb. After reading the first page I decided it was best to plow through the thread, hoping dearly the spoilers weren't true, and I was rewarded by finding out they weren't.

2. After I read the more current spoilers, while not as accurate or complete as what we have at the moment, I was joyous. Asuka didn't die, Shinji and Asuka are stuck togther at the end of the movie in what sounded like a wonderful scene, the movie focuses heavily on the Kaworu and Shinji relationship, everything sounded enjoyable if not great. This was the pinnacle period for me. I was happy, the movie sounded hopeful, it sounded like a movie I'd come away from happy.

3. Then came the more detailed posts. Things about Misato and crew hating Shinji, about his bomb collar, about the way they treat him. Here I experienced two emotions, and these lasted pretty much throughout the entirety of yesterday and this morning: depression and anger. I was depressed because the movie sounded horrible. Not bad, mind you, but depressing. It sounded like a movie I'd come away from the same way I came away from EoE, namely wanting to curl up in a ball and lay in bed for 3 days before I finally worked up the energy to get up. But even then, with EoE, I wasn't the same for weeks, and it sounded like I could expect the same for 3.0. On top of the depression I was also angry. Angry that Anno was going back to the descent arc of the original series after 1.0 and 2.0 were so upbeat, after I had got my hopes up so much with the earlier spoilers. Even though I expected 3.0 to be a downward spiral of misery from early on it didn't make me any less angry. I was also angry at the treatment of Shinji by the other characters. Angry that the relationships he had were shattering so much. All when I don't believe he did anything wrong. The anger resulted in me doing something I've tried to avoid for the last few months: arguing about Eva, arguing at all even.

4. After my latest post in the Shinji thread I hit a mellow point. Right now I'm just burnt out. I can still feel the anger in my stomach but I can't get it, thankfully, to rise very high. My mind and body just feel numb. I'm working on auto pilot, I don't want to talk (as opposed to type), I don't want to deal with people, I just want to stay where I'm at and zone out. I'm tired, which if you consider I slept for 10 hours and only got up a few hours ago is more than just natural. I feared 3.0 would kill any motivation I had and the spoilers have. I just want to either sit here and occupy my mind with low level thought or go to sleep. I'm still angry, I'm still depressed, but I just can't bring myself to have the energy to fuel either of them.

The film is plunging people into bouts of existential despair.

What's not to like?
"Now, from Nature we obtain abundant information about ourselves, and precious little about others. About the woman you clasp in your arms, can you say with certainty that she does not feign pleasure? About the woman you mistreat, are you quite sure that from abuse she does not derive some obscure and lascivious satisfaction? Let us confine ourselves to simple evidence: through thoughtfulness, gentleness, concern for the feelings of others we saddle our own pleasure with restrictions, and make this sacrifice to obtain a doubtful result." -The Divine Marquis

"I agree Hans, but we have talked about those anal fisting analogies." -Werner Herzog

At first I was like... What the fuck is going on in those people's minds...
But then it felt familiar, it kinda was like the first time I watched Evangelion, i never thought that I could feel that again, but Anno did it.
I LOVE the first 7 Minutes... I had to watch it 3 times to really decipher what was going on, kinda like the intro to 2.22, only better and more insane.
It's Anno's INFORMATION-OVERFLOW at it's best.

I also am greatly in love with the music I've heard so far. The revamped Jikai Yokoku feat. Choir is simply glorious, the Quatre Mains is nice too... And the "God in all it's Wrath" is goosebumps-inducing. The Moment the 11th Angel explodes in Space there's some deep brass going on. Gorgeous.

I also like all of the new designs, they remind me of Gunbuster 2, which I loved.

I dislike that they went a little overboard. It's simply too much NEW and too less old. I'd love to know more about Mari and Asuka... Does the AAA Wunder really have to fly? It does not fit into my mechanical-rusty-sci-fi-perception I have of EVA. Why SO many new crew members?
Storywise, I wished, that Q filled in the gaps 2.0 created... Instead they added more and enlarged the gaps to craters.

But hey, it's Anno's EVA. You didn't really came for conclusive storytelling, did you? That's why I can say, I'm pleased... Can't wait to see and understand it. I just hope they can deliver a great finale.

As expected from the master.

This must be like watching the reactions to End of Evangelion when it came out.

Aye, tis wonderful from an artistic perspective no doubt. Unfortuantely I was hoping for something different with Rebuild. After the crash Eva gave me I just don't enjoy those styles of plot as much as I did.

This. It finally feels like we're in middle of new Evangelion with all the controversy and "wait what the fuck" it implies instead of suspiciously universally well received summer blockbuster series (that funnily enough gets hardest dissing in hardcore fandom)

I probably won't comment as much as everyone else, but I just wanna say that I'm having so much fun reading these spoilers; these spoilers is making me feel like a kid who's about to get in ice cream in a few hours...I know it's coming, but the excitement of getting it makes the final taste all the more sweet. Honestly, I seriously wasn't expecting enjoying the direction this movie is heading so far; I just remember laughing my butt off on how much emotional sense this movie is going to be.

So, now that I do know what's going on, I only have five words: Bring it on. I'm ready.

Haven't seen, read spoilers.

Really not sure how the continuity hangs together going from 2 to 3. I don't mind a good twist, but this is like throwing out everything prior. Misato's yelling at Shinji to do what he wants, and now (by accounts) she's treating him as ruthlessly as his father did ... for doing what he wants. At the end of 2.0, Kaji says "Seele isn't going to take this lying down" (english) ... but apparently they pretty much do.

I'm concerned it's all going to end (4.0) without any explanations of what the hell happened in the intervening years or how/why things got so bad within NERV. Asuka and Mari, working together. Walle splits off (how do you just DO that and get away with it?). Just who the hell is Mari anyway. Stuff like that.

Like I said I don't mind twists, but I do mind unexplained plot elements. And at this very early point, to me, there's a lot that needs explaining. Didn't know where else to post this, sorry.

That's what I try to keep telling myself, it's just like EoE and that's good, it's just like EoE and that's good, be mature and think of the message.

But... I haven't even see the proper film with possibly emotional voice-acting and BGM, and i already feel like this DID something to me, and not in the "artiscly enjoyable" way EoE did - maybe the joy will come when I actually WATCH the motherfucker, but I was WARNED of EoE, so... Ahhh...

It took away my shiny anticipation. It even took 2.0 from me and the happy warm feeling i had when I first saw it. Those were her last words. HER LAST WORDS. That shot of the classmates in the crowd? They died, they freakin died.

I wanted to do my "homework" for university today, but all I could do is stare at this screen or curl up in bed. I can't even... release it in any creative way.
You're probably all already tired of me spamming this with my reactions, but it's like I can tell my parents that I'm depressed because of a Japanese cartoon.

I'm going to try sleeping again before I spend all night here again. maybe university will distract me.

just yesterday, I was having a weird Superman phase and hooked on several fanfics. Now, I'm this. This, because of a synopsis! No music will "click in", that huge fanfic I was so proud off seems so pointless (and not just bekause I opted to call Sakura "Maiko" before she had a name) and I'm all sorts of... I don't even know.
I want to unread, but I know that's missing the point.

...I can't cry either. 2.0 made me shed so many tears, but now Rei's dead.

Perhaps this film needs an age 50 certificate, so that only people sufficiently grounded in their lives can get to see it!
