How do you move up in ranks on this site? I see people who, below their username, can say something like Adam or Sahaquil. I'm just a lowly Embryo, So how do I move up in rank?

Rank is determined by number of posts.

it goes up every 50 till you reach 1000 i think then i dont know how many you have to post before ranking up

Yep, just posts. We strongly prefer posts with actual content though, so please don't just run around commenting on every silly thing you see for the sake of ranking (which honestly almost nobody cares about anyway).

Ah, so that's how that works! I though that at a certain level you could just set your title to whatever you want. Good to know!

I think the mods just make it the rules for custom titles as they go along.

Users do get to choose, but you still need the ok of a mod for it to actually be put into place.

Admins get to look behind the scenes enough to get at your profile and set titles -- and Ornette will do it in raw SQL, he's that awesome

The rule of thumb is that you have to be close to running out of auto-titles and request one; or be a sufficient personality to have earned one by your deeds; or some combination of these -- which is how the dear departed Twin Drive Sigma Aquarion got "Lyrical Magical" as a title.

Nah you gotta stand out in some way. I'm still not sure exactly why I got assigned with Sex God Bastard but I don't feel alienated from it, at least the bastard part

IIRC, it was something that Muggy posted that ended up being sigged.

I think I'm starting to get in the mood to go into the system and change ALL the ranking values, thereby invalidating every list that's been posted.

Besides... I need to add the Code 04 Angel-dingbats from the beginning of 3.0, don't I?

If for whatever reason you just HAVE to know when you're going to reach such-and-such rank, you can make a game out of finding the answer. All you have to do is find a few people who are in that rank and see what kind of post counts they have. It's not exactly a murder mystery.

Especially since you can generate a list of all EGF members organized by total posts on the "Members" page.
