What does everybody think about this show so far? I really like the setting so far, definetly stands out from a lot of the other shows from this year. Plus that first very gory opening scene makes me anticipate gratuitous amounts of blood.
My truth will be my own and not the one they gave me.

Watched ep 1 and am liking the main characters already. Am anticipating the parts in the novel that deals with
SPOILER: Show
the human-nature-twisting semi-institutionalized pre-adult homosexuality enforced by the dystopia
to show up and add to the grittiness the anime.

I'm at a loss trying to think of anything bad to say about it. Out of the three new shows I'm watching this season it's easily my favorite.

I start figuring out where this might be going and I'm pretty pleased by it. The (art-)direction and animation is gorgeous, I have nothing bad to say about the music and the characters so far... What really hooked me was the atmosphere though... there certainly is something dreadful lurking beneath the surface... LOVE IT.

Well, at this point I'm almost certain, that it won't fuck up too bad, so I'll keep watching it.

I was so intrigued by this anime after watching the first episode that I ended up reading a whole bunch of book reviews about the novel (many with spoilers) and even started to read the actual novels. Animation, music and character design all get top score from me, and the story composition and adaptation is competent so far (though some may say it gets too slow in ep.2)

Anyway I wrote quite a bit about the anime in MAL. If you are interested you are welcome to click the following links

Did episode 5 seem.... different to anyone else? I don't know what it was but it just seemed off compared to the rest. Not necessarily off in a bad way, just off. I'd almost say it felt like it was directed or animated by someone else, but I don't really know enough about video to say whether that's what I was sensing.

Also, they looked older... 1-4 I got the sense they were maybe 10-12 tops but they seemed easily 14 this episode, and I'm not talking about their behavior.

Yes, it was directed by someone else (Yamauchi) this time. They also censored the intimate scene.

What bothered me more than the art was the disorienting direction though. The flow of the scenes felt disjointed and not clear enough.

I liked it. More a series of vignettes than anything, which does a good job of keeping the atmosphere hectic and surreal without actually being thrill-a-minute action-packed or whatever.
Nothing is so valuable that it need not be started afresh, nothing is so rich that it need not be enriched constantly.

Really? I didn't see any obvious place where it was cut short.

As for the episode yeah it was storyboarded and ED'd (演出/episode director) by Yamauchi Shigeyasu. There isn't anything too strange about such things though because such combo credits are normal and it is very unusual for director of anime to actually ED any of its episodes. For example Anno doesn't have a single 演出/episode director credit apart from 26' in all of NGE. The director of Shinsekai Yori storyboarded first three eps on his own but episode director has always been someone else.

Given that I'm not familiar with Yamauchi's work as chief director I can't say if this more of a general hands-on-guy instance as is usual with ep. directors or if it is instance of letting a guy pretty much solo the whole episode from beginning to end a la ep 4 of Gurren Lagann or the "SHAFT guy" doing the Sanetoshi intro ep in Penguindrum in his style to a tee.

So I'm not sure if I can attribute the mood to the episode director going solo.

I'm pretty sure that effect was what was intended though. The whole episode is pretty paranoid and chaotic shit-run-for-your-lives-fest and the fuck-is-happening-ism reinforces that strongly. I think the effect was wonderful.

The sudden, seeming jump in character age was a bit more bother and I wonder if that comes down to AD. Again, don't know shit about 羽山淳一 so can't say. It wasn't that jarring when it comes to girls because Saki seemed to gain noticeable bosom out of nowhere (at least I didn't notice it in first three eps) already in previous ep.

Satoru was jarring as he seemed to gain couple of years between 4 and 5. Then again, what's exactly the time scale for these first 5 eps anyway? Since we have presumably adult Saki narrating the series for us with Aya Endo's voice I'm expecting we'll see her as adult sooner or later.

According to the novel there was supposed to be a BJ and HJ going on.

It's obvious he was allowed to go rampant with his eccentric style. If the cuts and angles didn't make it obvious, he did Casshern Sins.

Trying to be frantic because you are hunted in strange territories is one thing being clear about it another. Suddenly the monk is completely gone despite seeing him block with his force. In the end I got it, he was dead Jim, but a lot of people didn't and I can understand why. At least show a corps or something.

Then you have these kids suddenly making out because lolBonobo fuck society. It goes straight from being hunted by Watership Down mutants to please-be-gentle-it's-my-first-time. The whole scene itself was cringeworthy to say the least. I mean, Jesus, there is GIANT FUCKING RAT watching over you and you are exploring the other side. #YOLO I guess?

Scenes jump along places with seemingly no connection, a lot of close ups and bad animation and, man, I can't even make out what happened in the last scene.

Episode was a mess but at least we got tits. Six I might add. Yes, I counted them!

ahh, you ment that kind of censorship. I was thinking of beams of light variety.

Okay then. I didn' watch Casshern Sins because I was told it is shit.

they showed part of that mask thing flying, toasted. That and kids reactions should've been clear enough.

I thought that was one of the best and the most original parts of the episode. See, it bothered me earlier when Satoru found Saki (right before they were captured) how odd sexual tension they seemed to insert there for no reason at all and I was wondering is this combo effect more because of my wild interpretations or incompetence. When that wonderfully fucked up scene started to roll I realized "oh wow they weren't kidding 'bout bonobos thing" pretty soon and then the whole part of the ep made sense as a whole.

Cringeworthyness is hardly a negative in this case.

lol, can't argue with that. It was pretty much a mess.

Episode five was a bit odd but I'm still excited for the next episode.

Still can't believe so many people dropped it after episode two. :(

People dropped it after episode two? Why? That's not even following the three episode rule.

It was some bs about the pacing being too slow.
I tend to give a show 5 episodes to impress/entertain me.

Yea pacing was slow during the first 2-3 episodes. Still, I think the premise is interesting enough to make up for that, plus it's 2 cour.

Apparently it's to much for some people.

It's doing a good job so far at world building and lore, I may even read the novels later.

Did anyone understand the first few minutes of this episode? Can they fill me in on what happened?

SPOILER: Show
Exactly what was the deal with Saki tripping on acid? And with her fixing Satoru's cantus? I figured that they didn't truly have it "sealed," that it was just a trick and/or hypnosis, but how'd she bring it back, and what prompted her to try that? Also, what was the deal with the explosion? Was it just a bomb or something?

Anyway, good episode. Definitely wasn't as "off" as the last episode, which was nice. And to state what I think everyone's thinking: I don't trust that mole rat.
