Much appreciate for all the extra info!

Another point is that their current ship is a popular tourist attraction, which explains why students were able to make money running food stalls.
Maybe their funds are mismanaged so the senshado team has to scrimp and save to buy a P40?

View Original PostFireball wrote:BC Freedom
This explains why their school emblem was confusing; it literally houses two factions!

It's funny how Maginot (which we thought represented France before the Battle of France) apparently has ARL44s and BC Freedom (which should be the equivalent of the Free French forces under de Gaulle) seems to have FCM F1s.
Sounds like Vichy vs. Free France, and the Cross of Lorraine is in there too.

View Original PostFireball wrote:St. Gloriana's Girls Academy
The school has very stringent selection process to even be enrolled. Students aim to become a part of the "Tea Garden" the building where the best of the best students in grades and behaviour, and trusted by all, given soul names of teas, gather.
This soul name thing is serious business apparently.

View Original PostFireball wrote:Viking Fisheries High School
The students are crazy about precision, especially on the issue of time. They plan their battle plans literally down to the second, and they train their tank crews to extreme levels of proficiency. Their battle plans are nut and gos into details on at the exact moment you were suppose to see your enemy, where on the enemy tank you are suppose to target down to the cm. But the problem is their plans simply fall apart in actual battles, and the tank crews don't know what to do when they can't follow their training anymore.
Doesn't sound like the Finns. The Norwegians?

View Original PostFireball wrote:Bonple High School

As for Bonple Girl's High School, Polish themed, the school is historically close to St Gloria and they have an active exchange program.
Sounds like the alliance just before WWW II.

Rewatched the series over the last few days. Man, it's still so great. I love how lousy a shot Momo is and how much Anzu wrecks everyone when they just swap gunners. I love Darjeeling dropping her tea when Miho outmanouevres her. I love that Anzu's comment about Anzio is actually word-for-word what Anchovy quotes as what she imagines to be the general opinion of Anzio, and that I didn't even notice this when watching the Anzio OVA the first two times. I love the historical references I do get (Momo's answer to Katyusha's offer of surrender stands out), and wish I got the others I'm sure are in there. I love the scene where Pravda sings Katyusha. I love the second half of the Pravda battle and all of the last two episodes, every second of which made that broadcast delay worth it.

I love the details. The carefully-measured doses of development and archetypal character interactions that make such a large cast such a blast to hang out with (ranging from your fully-developed characters like Miho to your one-note characters like Saki), the music choices (The British Grenadiers and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies are personal favourites), the visual gags (Miho's shellshocked expression in episode 1 when the student council tries to bully her into taking senshado the first time carrying over to the next scene, Mako barely managing to avoid collapsing when informed she'd have to wake up at five, not six, and Shiho's reaction when Oarai performs the Anglerfish Dance).

I love how nonsensical the premise is, and how little it affects the show's ability to tell a great story. I love Girls und Panzer, and I can't wait for the movie.

Well, I say "can't wait", but it's a bit easier when it's a sequel to a satisfyingly-completed work than, say, the final installment of a four-part movie series. Really, the wait between episodes 10.5 and 11 was harsher than the wait for the movie.

I agree, I don't mind Actas needing more time to come out with a good product.
Also, I've been mentioning elsewhere that I was in Japan for 2 weeks - one of the places I visited was the GuP holy land, Oarai! :jiggy: Definitely one of the top 5 highlights of the trip and unlike Hakone, where things are spread out and need some imagination to visualize how they appear in the series,, Oarai is smaller, more concentrated, and it's much, much easier to see what exists that adapted into the series. Holy shit, this stuff is real!

I'll write up more when I have the time, but as a teaser, this is the ryokan where I stayed!

My girl Darjeeling is their standee character (Kinuyo Nishi's gone) because:

A fan even left a diorama of this scene with the rest of the GuP shrine in the lobby. The memories of the visit will help tide me over to next year. ;)

I agree, to be honest, I kind of expected it but if GuP delays have ever teached me one thing than that the wait is worth it.

In the meantime the new Ribbon Warrior manga will keep me entertained. There are only 3 chapters out so far but it's pretty good - that is if you are into Underground Tanking and have a foot fetish :shifty:

Yeah I knew I would miss the Anko Festival since I was in Japan as part of the Third Impact Tour and stayed for 5 more days.

Is the festival the whole weekend or just a day? Spent a night in Oarai but would suggest 2 days with 1 overnight. If things spike around festival time due to higher demand, maybe stay in Mito and take the train down.

I really want go to Oarai. Was there much to do there, AR-99? The impression I get from some cursory research is that it's a lot about the fish, what with the market and also the aquarium. Did you go to the Marine Tower? Will your write-up be linked here?

I've actually fallen behind on my GuP manga reading, though I did read the first two chapters of Ribbon Warrior (it was fun).

I think there's enough to do for up to 2 days going at a leisurely pace. Most of it would be GuP related, which would have you going all over the place and thus end up seeing a good part of the town.

The two days is based on coming from Tokyo. To maximize the time, I would get up to Oarai as early as possible, preferably before 10 since most businesses don't open until then, overnight, then stay until up to mid afternoon the next day due to the train schedule or you'll be stuck. Also, most businesses are closed by 7 so not much to do after that unless you hit up a bar or something. Oarai is small enough to walk but will involve a bunch of walking. If time is limited and say you only have a day, rent a bike. Bike theft doesn't seem to be an issue.

This Youtube video promoting Oarai has a general overview of what you can do, but I can think of:

Stamp rally
There are actually 2 types of stamp rally going on ATM:

Characters - This is the big one with 54 characters across Oarai from west to east. How I spent most of day 2 since I arrived early evening on day 1, didn't have a stamp book, and had no idea where shit was. Despite the limited time I had to work with, was able to get 37/54 characters since 90% are concentrated along the main thoroughfare.
Mini one - This only involves collecting 8 stamps from 8 specific locations and be done concurrently with the character one. Currently no end date.

Panzer spotting
Not as well known as the character standees, there are 45 mini standees of tanks all over town. I do not think these come with the associated stamps but they're not as well marked as the character ones, so will be slightly harder to find.

Shop
Great opportunities to find GuP merch only available in Oarai.

Eat
Of course there is the ankou delicacy. GuP ankou-yaki was the closest I got.

Sightseeing
The Marine Tower, Aqua World, and a local shrine are the main attractions here but Oarai has the small town charm still going on despite all the GuP attention it's gotten. And of course, matching what shows up in the series with the real world equivalents.

Thinking of doing a spinoff collection website for GuP since it has gotten to be the 2nd biggest anime I'm collecting right now and for tracking purposes. A writeup would make sense there, which of course I would link to here. Don't expect anything anytime soon since I've been slammed since I got back.

Thanks for posting that! You did say you were planning a write-up, so I don't mean that it was all for little old me, but I appreciated it nonetheless.

I love that Oarai's website has an entire section for Girls und Panzer, and it sounds like a blast for that angle alone. I wonder how locals who don't like the series consider the attention it garners for the town.

I'll write up something more detailed with my pics and post here when it's ready.

This is an interesting question. I'd be surprised if there are elements of the business sector of Oarai that aren't on board. The GuP related sights are concentrated in the town's business, recreational and sightseeing areas, so the impact to the residential areas is minimal to nonexistent. And while people might get tired of it, it is a fact of life now and overall the town would be nuts not to keep the spirit going.

I managed to find the info on the rest of the schools translated!

SPOILER: Show
Image

Black Forest

First, Black Forest couldn't actually dock their school ship at their official home province because it doesn't have the right kind of port that can allow for it, so they have another port elsewhere that they actually use.
The Nishizumi school is ANCIENT. They started as horseback archers in 1754. When archery became obsolete, they converted to horseback firearms. Combine with another tradition leading to a female focused school of combat concerning the use of guns and Naginata while on horseback. When Japan modernised the school got incorporated in the government military. And when tanks were first introduced, Nishizumi school got access to tanks first in the country. Thus Japanese Senshado started there.

After WW1 ended, a lot of leftover tanks were sold. Nishizumi purchased a lot of them and thus they truly became a tank powerhouse of the nation.

Germany links: In the medieval times there was a deliberate attempt by the Nishizumi school to learn Prussian Calvary tactics. There was something about a doctor (need help translating!) and basically they were best of friends with Prussians. But then WW1 happened and Japan allied with England so they had to break diplomatic relations.

During WW1 there was skirmishes with Prussian colonies near Japan, and this lead to Purssian POWs. Some of these POWs ended up staying in Japan instead of going home, and many of them were guests at Nishizumi School because of past ties and friendly history. This leads to social networking with their relatives, some of them obtaining high level positions in the German government and heavy industry, and the result was Black Forest Highschool being set up in Japan.

After WW2 ended, during the confusion at the time, large quantities of rare and even experimental military hardware in Germany ended up being shipped to Black Forest for safe keeping. (So THAT's how they got a Maus!)

Schol attitude: The students are extremely lawful and strongly believe in justice and rules. And whenever they do something they always go full force all the way. They are interpreted by others as stubborn and conservative, and not very good at negotiations. The school badly needed a shakeup as they have set in their old ways too long.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Blue Division High School

They have regular practice matches with Black Forest. They prefer tactics involving quickly breaking through enemy lines and then hit them from behind. The team is surprisingly tough to defeat. They are obviously a reference to the real Blue Division. Half the paragraphs are filled with tank info, like how they modify tanks that had machine guns to carry artillery guns. Historical refference to how they (both sides of Spanish Civil War) had a sort of upgunning fetish. Known National (Francoist) upgunings of the Panzer I include the better-known Breda model (fully enclosed turret with Breda 20mm AT gun, whose 40mm@500m made it actualy useable for senshado, and the unsucessful 37mm, 45mm and *TWIN 37mm* prototypes, all them ment to be fully enclosed, all three unsucessful, single prototype with no photos). It must be noted that the Germans were fucking scared of the things, deeming them "too crazy, too dangerous".
And then we have the Republican prototype, Verdeja, which combined the 45mm gun of a T26 in betwen he two coaxial MGs of a Panzer I (literally) in an AA-capable mount.

School culture: Sunny personalities, very curious about everything, and enjoys talking. Very much famous for their artistic talents, with their music, paintings, drama plays, together with the Andorra High school they are the twin arts specialists. The school has many gourmets, and they organise feasts with other local schools like Andorra regularly.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Gregor High School

It all started when Japanese painted kitchenware and pottery first became popular as an export item to europe, and Czech merchants came to Japan to set up a depot for the manufacture and shipping of goods to be sold to Europe. The pottery factories they built eventually became the future Gregor High School. The Bushido memorabillia and things influenced the Czechs and some came to Japan to learn more. Gregor treats the Japan-Czech international cultural exchange as one of their most important subjects. And a part of that includes Senshado. Sadly, they are poorfags.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Pravda

When the Tzar Russia was developing the Eastern territories, they needed places to service their ships. Because of their proximity Russia sent men and resources to the area to build ports and ship yards that became Pravda. The native Russians that were there built a school for their children, and when the trade rount with Russia was formally completed in the 1890's, many Russians spent the rest of their lives in Japan. Their children attended a school built from a 2nd hand ship that became modern Pravda.

When Senshado reached its prime, Pravda had the advantage of being able to import tanks directly from Russia. They became really strong after the 1980's when they got themselves T-34s and IS-2s.
The tanks themselves are often modified to suit their needs too, with uprades to optics and radio, and weight modifications to go faster.

Pravda is the envy of smaller schools, and is one of the few that was able to field 50 tanks at a time for the special exhibition 50 vs 50 matches. (One assumes the other school is Saunders.)

Pravda is a large school, but the tankers lack flexibility. Things fall apart as soon as the commander mess up. This was why Pravda tend to get knocked out at the first round in matches because one simple mistake gets them crushed.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Waffle Academy

Waffle is a Belgium themed school with an interesting past. Belgium as a nation has limited natural resources thus their economy focus on importing raw materials and sell the valued-added finished products.
The Kansai region formed political bonds with Belgium, on the surface, for no reason than cultural exchange. But in actuality the local government wanted to poach their manufacture technology. Waffle was originally called Belgian industry exchange school. And it was successful in improving the manufacturing skills of the locals. However when the war started, the contact with Belgium broke down and the school shrunk. Senshado thus halted there.

Some members of the school sees that the end is near and refused to give up, so they changed the school's direction to focus on Belgian culinary traditions. This was a hit with Kobe citizens and the school started growing again. The school changed its name to Waffle to reflect that it is no longer about manufacturing. When they start to run out of classroom for new students, they purchased and refurbished an American school ship that was meant to be dismantled.

The increased popularity of the school means they started running into cooking ingredient shortages, and have now started to import food products from Belgium directly. The school just kept upgrading their facilities until they were able to process meats, seafood, and there was even an arts division on the side. As the school expanded, so did the student numbers and Senshado was revived. After much negotiation they got themselves 105mm M4 medium tanks. There seems to be issues with turrets and that they waiting for approval to use them in matches.

The school is hard working and conservative. Have a friendly culinary exchange with Blaue Division.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Continuation High School

The early history is hard to deciphor, as Finland as we know it didn't exist until 1917. But somehow there was things about royalty visiting and the like. After independence the future school wanted to help the new nation by establishing trade, and this means creating a path to Finland from Hokkaido, THROUGH the North Polar Ice. Japan was not yet able to build a good enough Icebreaker vessel so they bought one from Finland. That ship would became the future schoolship.

The school has a mix of tanks from many nations, and they specialise in crazy modifications on these tanks. They have crazy accurate gunners, and invincible in the snow. (Simo Häyhä reference!)

On the other hand, in near tropical areas they are doomed...

Culturally the students have high endurance, enjoys solitude, but is crazy serious about friendships. Friends are like family.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Count High School

Yes, it is Romania. Talk about silly...The whole thing got started when a wealthy Romanian Aristocrat decided he wants to build a hotspring resort in Japan, in an area that he say resemble his homeland. That resort was popular and this leads to the development of the area and the formation of the school. The silly thing is that the Aristocrat was NOT a Count, he was a Duke. No one remember why they called the school Count.

The school specialises in agriculture and the development of new breeds of crops. The school also have a very peculiar and POPULAR elective in Witchcraft(!), with many young girls learning the ways of the Wicca for their goal to become fortune tellers.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Viggen High School

Minor school, school established by a Swidish Botanist and the school started with plant based courses, expanding to engineering and steel industries. They also got as far as agricultural courses and carpentry, though recently home economics seem to be a big deal there.

The students are enthusiastic about Senshado, but they couldn't attend the national tournament due to lack of tanks and crew numbers.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Chi-Ha-Tan Academy

Chihatan have links with local schoolship construction. The school was sandwiched between an area that produces fine horses, and the industrial heartland. The school has a fine archery and Naginata tradition, done on horseback. (This seems to be similar to Black Forest.)

Like Black Forest they move into tank driving after WW1 ended, and they started driving tanks Japan made themselves. The first instructors were wW1 veteran tank drivers.

The school's best performance was when they reached the 4th round one time. But recently they have been rpeated crushed in the first round. Most recently they got annihilated by Black Forest at extreme range before they could even fight back. This is despite they did what they could to improve their tank's performance.

The school culturally end up with girls with strong maternal instincts. The school has a huge library that is renowned in the country, and students even publish their own books. And as mentioned earlier, they still have a fine equestrian tradition.

SPOILER: Show
Image

Maple High School

Manzo Nagano was the first Japanese to immigrate to Canada in 1877. That was where the Canadian relations with Japan started. There was many other Japanese who moved to Canada since. Official embassy construction was done in 1889 and 1929. And the focus on the exchange of ideas concerning farming, forestry and culture.

A school was built to teach fishing specialising in the North Pacific ocean. Later an incomplete schoolship was purchased and a massive forest planned on top.

School has a very active Senshado club, specialising in mobile warfare. They use cruiser tanks mostly with some light tanks.

Thanks for the additional information on the different schools. ^_^

Now, while I'm here, I might as well give a short explanation, on how I first came across 'GIRLS und PANZER':

It all started during my very first trip to Japan (back in April 2013), when I visited Toyota's Amlux Salon in Ikebukuro, coincidentally during their tie-in campaign with the anime. I didn't bother to look further into it, and it wasn't until my third tour across the country, that I started watching all of the anime's individual episodes along the way, and ultimately searched for more information about the franchise.

The rest is history. It has now become one of my favorite series besides Evangelion, Sailor Moon, InuYasha and Haruhi Suzumiya's Melancholy. And with my next trip to the Land of the Rising Sun on my mind (what do I even say, I've already got the flight tickets), I'm now planning to visit Ōarai myself, which I'm looking forward to very much (though, it will only happen close to the end of my trip.)

^I was there last October. Wish I could have stayed longer than overnight and most of 1 day. You will be in GuP heaven. More teaser, this is some of the lobby of a ryokan that has Saki as their standee character. Really liked the fanart and hoping to ID the artist. Was so tempted to jack something since there was no one around, but behaved myself.

How fluent are you? Not as much English spoken in Oarai but if you know how to get there and get around it's doable, as the town is walkable. I had the tour company I went with make the travel arrangements as part of an extension.

I expect Ōarai to be nothing less than heaven, and I (really hope that I) will most probably have to keep my money together, once I'm there. I'm not quite fluent yet as I would like to be, but also no beginner either, and it worked out rather well during my trips around Japan in the past two years.

I've only been using a tour company during my first visit; ever since then, I've been organizing and planning everything in advance by myself, and Ōarai won't be an exception this time. Right now, I'm thinking about a one-day excursion, so I'll try to get there as early as possible and visit every important place, before I take one of the last trains back to Mito, in order to be sure, I'll make it to Tokyo again.

Here's the feedback I sent to my tour company about the Oarai portion (it was Pacset tours). Note that I left from Ueno Station.
From the itinerary I went up the Marine Tower and briefly checked out the Resort Outlets, which are close by. I otherwise spent the rest of the time collecting as many character stamps as possible, getting 37/54. I was able to return to Sakanaya to get my bag and get to the Oarai Station by 3:45 and got to Mito just as the return train to Tokyo pulled in...

Recommendations: Anyone who is a Girls und Panzer fan needs to make the anime pilgrimage here. What's different from Hakone is that things are more concentrated, GuP material is prolific and easy to get to and see and, the locations that appear in the series are real. Whereas with Eva being set in an alternate future, much of what's there now and the environs takes some imagination to place in the series. I really enjoyed Oarai although my time there was short.

For a day trip, get up to Oarai Station as early as possible given that the return train to Tokyo leaves at 4. This would likely hit the latter half of rush hour period getting to Ueno. The TIC at the station is open from 9-5 and the lady working there is very helpful but doesn't speak English. The town is walkable but renting a bike will be faster and on Friday the traffic was light. Bike theft doesn't seem to be an issue.

If someone is trying to get all the stamps and add in sightseeing I would suggest 2 days. More than one proprietor was curious about where I was from and I even ran into 3 grad students who asked me a series of questions about GuP and my anime fandom. There are also businesses with 45 standees of the tanks out front that are a little harder to spot. I suggest picking up the Oarai Garupan Travel Guide since it has photos of the businesses that have character and tank standees with maps, although I noticed that since publication a few of the standees shifted around.

The latest character standee map and the tank maps are on the Oarai website. The Garupan Travel Guide is still helpful as it shows what the local sights and businesses look like IRL and in the anime.

Some other tips:

-Rewatch the series again before you go (duh).
-A day trip is doable but depending on your schedule, how much of the town you want to see and the pace you want to take, I highly suggest 2 days. You could overnight in the town or in Mito. I had an overall good experience with Sakanaya Honten except for what I mentioned above and they're centrally located.
-If you can only do 1 day, rent a bike. Oarai Station has some and it's 500¥ for a day. Can't remember though if these are generic bikes or the GuP ones. Sakanaya has GuP ones. It will really help if you're planning to do the stamp rally and reach some of the farther destinations from the station, such as the shrine and aquarium.
-If you stay longer than a day, many businesses I believe shut down at 19:00.
-If you're trying to do the stamp rally and want to save some time, pick up a stamp book beforehand. There are small blue ones that look like the Oarai student handbook that are sod at the Resort Outlets (see below) but IIRC those don't open until 10.
-You can base your sightseeing around the character map. Most of the stamps are in the central business district although some are farther away (e.g. the aquarium).
-Try to go on a weekday if you can.
-The trip from Mito to Oarai Station is about 10 minutes. I got the GuP train going back.
-Suggested purchases: GuP merch and food you will only find in Oarai.
-There's only 1 konbini in the town IIRC and it's not centrally located.
-Bring something to leave behind at the business (es) that sponsors the standee of your favorite character (s). Alternatively, bring a small souvenir from your hometown, e.g. a magnet (got this idea from Murai).
-I got a few business cards and can badges with the characters on them but didn't ask for them, the proprietors gave them to me for coming by. Not everyone will do it but your understanding of Japanese may help out. I was disappointed that I didn't get the Darjeeling one from the ryokan I stayed at (Sakanaya Honten). I know I pissed off the female proprietor somehow but am not sure what it was, so she never offered.

Recommended stops:

-Oarai Station: You'll be coming into here but will likely spend more than a few minutes in the station. The TIC is chockful of GuP paraphernalia and you can pick up info and maps. You will save a bit on tickets to the Marine Tower if you purchase them here. The Convi Mart in the station appears in the anime. It's small but has some Oarai exclusive merch.
-Resort Outlets Oarai: I only checked out the My Wai grocery store, which has a GuP corner and sells anko yaki. There was an empty business space on the second floor with standees and models in the window.
-Marine Tower: Other than the Anko Team standees up here and a 360 view of the town and harbor there's actually not that much to see and the observation deck is smaller than it looks. There was a small tour group visiting so it was a little crowded when I checked it out. You can go into the lobby without buying a ticket. It's next to the Resort Outlets so it might be worth a quick look.
-Murai Liquor Store: If you're remotely into firearms, the owner has a small collection including an StG 44, MP 40, and MG 34 (they may be replicas but look like the real deal). The standee character is Orange Pekoe.
-Yumoto: This is a clothing store around the corner from Sakanaya Honten that has some sensha-do finals gear like shirts (got one) and towels. Their character is Anchovy.

Feel free to shoot me any questions you may have about Oarai.

St. Gloriana gets beat then they all chill in the onsen like civilized folk is my guess. This'll justify a return to trip to Oarai for next time!

Up to speed on Ribbon Warrior. Is it on hiatus or something? The latest chapter scan came out in October! Tankobon 1 came out last month.

Came across this. Any clues as to what it is? The JP title translates as Ragnaroff (ラグナロフ).

Still quite some time to go, until the movie's going to be released. This is only turned up to eleven by the German Blu-ray/DVD release of the series, which will start with the first out of three volumes being available from February 1... 2016. I really hope for a decent German dub, if there'll be one.

Also, 'drifting' - the Japanese way of driving a tank. ;)

A bit late here from my side, but anyway, thank you so much for all the tips and recommendations; this is way more than I could have ever asked for, and I'm sure it'll help me quite a bit.

Actually, since two or three days, I've been really thinking about spending the night in Ōarai. After all, it is the girls' hometown, and I've already had enough trouble visiting new places around Tokyo the last (third) time. So, I'll most probably get there rather early, have a good night's sleep under the same sky as Miho and her friends, and then stick around until the early evening the on the next day. If businesses do shut down at 7 PM, there's still a train left to catch towards Mito and Ueno, at least according to HyperDia. Either way, any two days between Tuesday and Friday will be the ones for me to look forward to in July.
