Because that would make it seem less jarringly random.

It wasn't jarring or random. It was beautiful. I, personally, had never seen a fight scene with a classical piece played behind it before I watched Eva. It is Anno's style, and in EoE, it was perfect.

Seems to fit in with the other pieces throughout the series.

That would be great- I'm surprised that Requiem hasn't been used already. I also think Tchacovsky's March Slav would be fitting for an intense battle scene. (Or psychalogical trauma scene).

Yeah, Requiem sounds like it would make good trailer music as well. Marche Slav sounds good, too.

Would "Exogenesis Symphony" by Muse count? It does have a classical style, apart from a 2/3-minute guitar bit in the middle.

Although there probably aren't a lot of Muse fans in Japan.

Uh, it was used in one of the Death and Rebirth trailers.

I have the feeling if any classical music is used in NME, it'll be something that wasn't already used in NGE. Take Sor's Variations on a Theme of Mozart in 2.0 (Rei and Gendo meal scene) for instance. (Oh, the Andrea Dieci version is nice.)

Borodin's Polovtsian Dances making an appearance in 3.0 or 4.0 would be cool. That is the piece that Anno originally wanted to use for the NGE OP, right?

I've only listened to the first three minutes of this so far, but I already love it. I think that both the sound and theme of the piece fit really well with Evangelion. Even if it doesn't make it into Rebuild, an extra-long AMV using this song would be pretty goddamn awesome.

EDIT: After looking more closely at the lyrics, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this song was inspired by NGE. They fit the story really, really well.

I think it'd be interesting if a rendition of Beethoven's "Emperor" (Concerto No. 5, Op. 73) were used.

The 2nd and 3rd movements, in particular, my preference is lent to. The former has an elegance that reminds me of Air.

Then again, for all we know, Sagisu might create the entire soundtrack by himself. *agonises over poor idea of what Q will be like*

Cmon, it has 'Symphony' in its name. But I see what you mean, it is 'Alternative Rock', not 'Classical', and I really can't be bothered defining the differences between different eras of music (like Beethoven being more Romantic than Classical). I guess the name of the topic is all period music in general, excluding Modern (as in 1900s, Contemporary, 21st century). Maybe if they made a music video series like Gurren Lagann did, the song(s) by Muse would fit.

Whoops, I seemed to have trailed somewhat from the topic. My bad!

Why would contemporary classical music not be included? There's nothing less "classical" in purpose in a Volker Ignaz Schmidt duet than other classical pieces listed in this thread. Arranging a classical piece for a rock band doesn't make it anymore "classical" than an arrangement of a rock album to be played by an orchestra "rock". I don't think Gurren Lagann had any classical music in it, unless you mean they had some songs with strings and operetta.

Definition of classical music is difficult in itself but I'm pretty sure OP ment it in the usual "all that ol' time string and horn music written by dead white males in 5th century B.C or whenever mozart lived" sense

What I meant by classical is pieces that are played by a full orchestra/band. You know, like the rest of the "classical music" we've seen in Evangelion, such as the two that I mentioned in my original post. They can be from any time period, even contemporary and modern stuff. But after hearing "Exogenesis Symphony", I guess we can extend the definition to include anything with a prominent symphonic element.

If we're going to be that liberal in our definitions, then Rebuild already has appropriated a "classical" piece:

Yeah, stuff like this counts. That was one of my favorite musical themes from Rebuild.

I'd like to amend what I said in my last post. My intent in my original post was to have people propose "classical music" in the traditional sense. Pieces like Ode to Joy, Air, the Hallelujah Chorus. Posting other symphonic pieces is fine, but make an effort to post them along with an example of "art music".

I think Wikipedia aptly states my intended definition here.

Funny enough that's one of the pieces Sagisu didn't write, it's from the film The Man Who Stole The Sun.

A reworked throwback to End of Evangelion might work out nicely, especially in the event that sequel theory turns out to be true.
