Over the last year or so I've watched Riding Bean, Gunsmith Cats, and Bubblegum Crisis. I really like the way Sonada and his unit animators do "chase scenes." Great sense of speed. Are there any other animes that have a similar aesthetic?

Well, that's pretty vague. Great sense of speed, that is.

One could always watch Redline if one wants supreme depiction of speed.

I suppose that was a bit inarticulate. I enjoy the tenseness of his chase scenes, and the way a crash always seems imminent for the parties involved. Riding Bean has the best chase sequences I've seen in years, including live-action, and I was hoping for something along those lines. The beautiful choreography of the cars moving between obstacles juxtaposed against the chaos of ensuing destruction.

Lupin III has scenes like those, with the weaving in and out of buildings, it's almost like the animators were poking fun at how European and Japanese cars are essentially go-carts.

You could try Gall Force. It has space fighter and hoverbike chases and Sonoda's character designs to boot.

Thanks to all of you guys. I've watched a little Lupin III, but now want to dive in head-first. Also, Gall Force sounds great. It's on my queue as we speak.

funnily enoug there's (unconfirmed as far as I can tell though he supposedly does love the film) anedcote about Spielberg calling Castle of Cagliostro's car chase the best ever.

It is excellent without doubt

Best ever in an anime? Hard to believe even that. Though not technically traditional car chases, Initial D has beyond edge of your seat car chases. Even Gunsmith Cats has a better chase scene. Or Black Lagoon, or Blassreiter.

Outside of anime, hardly anything comes close to Bullit, nor gets close to the absurdity of Blues Brothers, or the scale of Gone in 60 Seconds (not the remake). Hard to imagine anyone even putting Cagliostro's car chase in the same sentence.

as said it's uncredited anecdote. Personally I'd pick Blues Brothers's ending.

Macross Frontier's pantsu chase is the best chase scene of all time.

There's chase scene in Plus?

Ehh, it was just Yoshino lazily recycling his best plot-of-the-episode idea from Mai-HiMe.

Of course both are rather pedantic exercises next to the magnum opus of the genre: Strike Witches pantsu chase episode

Well, it's technically not a chase, but there is a sense of speed involved somewhat...

Well, THE dogfight at the end of it, is so top notch.

Macross Plus is almost the "Godfather" of anime. It might not be the best in it's genre, of all time, "per se", but there are no problems with it, on the technical level, at all.

Also, the staff on that one is just crazy.
