Gainax is holding a character design contest through January 20th for a new character in an upcoming cell phone game. The character will be in the same class as Shinji, Asuka, Rei and the others, and will be along the same lines as characters like Mana Kirishima and Megumi Yamagishi.
I don't know specifics, whether it's open to people outside Japan or not, but apparently submissions are made by mail, so if you can mail it to the adress under the proper criteria, then why not?

this got me thinking: what kind of girl (the contest wants a girl) would be interesting to plop into Shinji's class?
Instead of a new girlfriend for Shinji, maybe it's time for the new character to reveal an unexplored side of Asuka or Rei (or even Touji or Kensuke). More importantly, we want a new character to stir things up and make for some new stories: maybe a new girl who likes Touji, angering Class Rep? The guys are on Touji's side, Asuka's on Class Rep's side, and Rei just stares out the window as always.

I would like to see a guy who has the same personality as Sawyer from Lost: hot-tempered and rough on the edges. He could be a perfect match for Asuka.
Or if it's a girl, probably along the lines of Yurika Misumaru from Nadesico. No, not the character, but the personality. Very cheerful, complete air-head and acts like she's in her own world.
