I started this thread because I have not seen this mentioned elsewhere on this forum

FYI, I have yet to see this (but I will); however, I am hearing very good things from people whose opinions I trust about this movie that came out last Friday across the English-speaking parts of North America, and that is the movie Drive

FYI, I also have not done any further research on this other than the brief synopsis and some spoiler-free reviews both from professional critics along with word-of-mouth IRL and around the web

however, just listening to the soundtrack, you had better believe I am going to see this

it did alright at the box office for its opening weekend, maybe this has potential to become this year's biggest sleeper hit

my review summary in its patent-pending style will be posted later this week after I see it

I'd also heard this is good. If I can find the time I'll go see it with friends.

so I am back from seeing this, and while I have the time, here are my thoughts

What I LIKED about Drive:

1. This is one of the most atmospheric movies I have seen in a long time. The weird thing was unlike movies such as Tree of Life or even Mullholland Drive, it never felt artsy or snobby. The SILENCE that permeates in most every scene did an excellent job of keeping things cool and tense. And when there was no absolute silence...

2. THE soundtrack of this movie. MY GOODNESS! It was also an unusual treat to her such a synthesizer-heavy score peppered with excellent synth-pop songs like this one without getting orchestral or in-your-face.

3. Everybody acted great in this and no one felt miscast. Part of me wanted to see more of certain characters than what transpired, which of course may have been the idea.

4. The action/stunts. While I had some issues that I will bring up in more detail in a second, the fact that they made an effort to back off CGI and keep the stunt driving as real as possible was a beautiful sight to behold. I hope this trend continues.

What I DISLIKED about Drive:

1. This is ultimately minor, but the movie took an abrupt shift (no pun intended) about half-way through. The ending sorts things out quite nicely, but it got choppy for a while despite everything going so smooth and seamless earlier.

I heard before this from many folks that Drive was one of the best movies this year, and I have to agree

I am torn between this and X-Men: First Class as the best of 2011, it would depend on my mood and a second and third viewing of each to determine which is better IMO

Saw Drive last night. Excellent film. Not going to be winning many awards, but it was just a smooth, skillful bit of filmmaking. Wonderful atmosphere, cinematography, editing, and the use of music was excellent.

But damn does the violence and gore come out of nowhere half way through.

Also, if you're a fan of Christina Hendricks, sorry to disappoint you, but she's barely in the movie.

My only problem with the film wasn't that the violence came out of nowhere, it was when the violence was a little too ridiculous and felt like it didn't match the toned down feel of the rest of the film.
SPOILER: Show
Like when he kills the guy via impaling him with the curtain rod, as if his body was made out of butter; or when they have to take the brutal beating in the elevator one step too far, by having him literally crush the guys head; or the worst of all IMO, when he hits Nino's car and it does like two flips through the air before landing, instead of realistically just getting shoved off the cliff. (Also, I like how the Driver's car isn't even damaged from the collision.)

I believe the film was trying to express a duality. The main character is the same way.

I guess, but it already had that without going so over-the-top. The action was all very quick and brutal, which contrasted with the very slow, methodical, atmospheric rest of the movie. And it was only some of the violence that was ridiculously excessive; the rest, while very bloody, was still with in a limit to where it didn't feel completely out of place with the rest of the film. But I'm just nitpicking as I really enjoyed the film.

@Drive itself: Something only marginally related to the film itself that I really enjoyed was how much crowd in the screening I went to disliked the film. One guy actually yelled, "that sucked" after the film. I don't think anyone in the theater but my two friends and me actually liked the film. (It was mostly filled with people who looked like they were there to see a shlocky action movie with tons of car chases and explosions.)

I need to see more movies in SoCal.
