Liverpool Anglican would take at least 100 hours to record pipe by pipe (it has about 10,000). At times that are quiet outside for the quietest stops. With the cathedral empty... Maybe longer, because of the length of the reverberation that you have to wait for after each and every note. Think of the hire cost plus the salaries of the staff that would have to be there for health and safety... Then work out how long to process the data, and then the cost of the sample set... Some cost £1000 already.

Like you said in that thread in the other forum, someone should sample the organs before they fall out of eventual disuse and the craft of making them is lost forever.

Well, that also leads to a curious conflict of cause and effect doesn't it!

Also, everyone who has sampled analogue data, whether it's scanning photos, digitizing movies, or recording sounds, knows that there will always be developments that justify keeping the analogue original around for future techniques to be applied to. New HD scans, for instance (yes, NGE, coming soon!). New techniques in surround recording (I didn't mention that I'm involved with that, too). More than you can think of, because they're in the future.

BTW, another problem with sampling organs. Remember that polyphony I mentioned in the linked thread - 10,000 samples playing simultaneously? That's 10,000 instances of background noise. Given that organs are noisy anyway - all that leaking wind - as are microphones and preamps too, think about the amount of noise reduction required. Avoiding artefacts, of course (have you ever used serious noise reduction? It ain't easy!).

Yea, there's probably much better environment for learning and motivating than being at home like I was. Although I did attend a music school/class after normal school at one point, I was probably too old by then and it was kinda intimidating. All these other kids whose parents were pushing them and I was the only one there not playing an orchestral instrument. I think I backed outta there after a few classes, but possibly because I didn't connect with the other kids rather than because I found it boring, I had soaring social anxiety at that point. I know I could play grade 8 stuff at the age of 14, but I must have resented being told what to do or something... or going down the formal route (those prac exams, talk about stress). Had the ability I guess, just not the motivation to move ahead in a sensical way, and my parents gave up on me with it because I wouldn't practice the scales every day, or maybe because I seemed too blase about it.

I have the same problem. I am very passionate about music, but my home is just a terrible environment. My family (none of them are THAT serious in music) decided to have a communal practice/storage room. I hated it since I knew my stuff would always get taken and sharing time is awful, etc. but also my siblings are not the most pleasant people to be around so I decided to practice in a secluded space in my family's basement, where the acoustics aren't great and there isn't much space and it's kinda detached from the rest of the house, so as a result i practice less. also, I'm an AP student so having the immediate demand of schoolwork kind of takes away from music.... I am still serious about it and enjoy music but home life definitely takes away from it.
