News of Anime in Japan

Postby symbv » Fri Sep 02, 2011 5:53 am

I am starting a new thread to cover the anime news from Japan. I used to post new information in the "What anime are you watching right now?" which never feels quite right or in individual thread related to a particular anime which can be scattered and such a thread can be hard to find.

This will cover only anime news coming from Japan and I do not expect I will post anything on things like licensing in the west or new version of dubbing overseas. Discussion about the news is welcome (it would help me too as I will not be the only poster in the thread having to repeatedly delete and re-post) and any contribution of news about anime in Japan is particularly welcome.

This time I have mainly three pieces of news to share:

==========================================================================================

1. New anime in production in Japan

I already covered new anime coming in the next season in in the "Fall/Autumn 2011 Anime" thread. The only news on that front is that Coppelion is now moving to a later unspecified date. Perhaps the nuclear situation in Fukushima is still a matter of concern..

As a summary, the next season we will see the following anime among others:

Weekend of Aug 13/14
- Gunbuster BD Box took the top spot from Gundam UC #4 this weekend, with Nadia BD Box also on very high position. Sohkyu no Fafner is going strong and managed to stay within top 10. The usual three Madoka, Ano Hana and Steins;Gate still lead the pack for TV anime, with IS, T&ampB, Hana Iroha not far behind. For this season's anime, Ro-kyu-bu is making a very noticeable debut while YuruYuri and PenguinDrum are now going head to head with Natsume Yujincho 3 and Usagi Drop in advance sales. Also to be noted is the release of other BD Box like Working! and s.CRY.ed and the OVA of Hellsing and Ruroni Kenshin.

Weekend of Aug 13/14
- This weekend the BD Box of Hidamari Sketch is top, probably helped by the announcement of the new season as well as fervor built up prior to Comiket about Madoka (which Hidamari Sketch shares the character design). Howl's Moving Castle made a decent debut though perhaps not as well as expected for a Ghibli product (as for Tales from Earthsea perhaps it is the contrary - it is doing better than expected); on the other hand, Ponyo also made back to top 40 perhaps as a side-effect. The new Shinkai movie is surprisingly quick to go to BD/DVD (at least for pre-order) and get into top 10. On the TV anime front, Tiger &amp Bunny (T&ampB) is making a strong push to high position. For this season's anime, YuruYuri is rising up quick, and Sacred Seven debuted in a good position. On the other hand, PenguinDrum is dropping down the rank.

Weekend of Aug 20/21
- Nearing the release date, Madoka #5 claimed back its top spot and Ano Hana #3 also to be released in the coming week is on 2nd spot. IS #5, Steins;gate #3, Index II #7 and T&ampB #4 also rose because it is also released in the coming week. The same applies to Working!! BD Box. Yes, once in month the schedule of anime BD/DVD release would suddenly jump and this is the week in August. Apparently this week the schedule is even more concentrated on this week so the competition for otaku's monies is very keen. We also see a jump in ranking for Marduck Scramble and Gundam W Endless Waltz -- and the reason is the same. In the midst of all these, YuruYuri is doing well, as is Utano Prince-sama.

Weekend of Aug 27/28
- Last weekend. P4 shook the anime fandom about how it easily snatched the top spot without even showing any anime episode yet. Seems that fans of the original game ordered the anime just on faith based on the game and the PV shown so far. Amazing. Madoka #5&amp6 are doing very well but somehow they are not as high as some fans thought they should be. Also to be noted is the making back to top 40 by the two movies of Evangelion NME, definitely a result of the first TV broadcast of Evangelion 2.0 the previous Friday. There are also a bunch of BD Box making their debut: Onegai Teacher, Onegai Twins and Future GPX Cyber Formula. There is also a Milky Holmes OVA timed to the announcement of the new season. For current season anime, YuruYuri and Utano Prince-sama are doing best, with Natsume Yujincho 3 and KiyoChiki trailing behind.

Didn't see this coming, it's been what, 8 years? Thought the story had ended pretty solidly.

I'll drop it like a rock if that poster is accurate of the character designs.

- Code Geass 3rd season

... How?

What's this? An original mecha series that plans to take itself seriously? Have my prayers been answered?

That trailer is kind of worrying me though....

I'll definitely be following this thread...I'm not sure on contributions. Just because of the way I do things, I follow at the micro-level of anime/seiyuu/studio/director and not for everything equally in a given season. I only see the macro-level picture for well, sales and sometimes a news item here or there. I guess I have to think about what would be the best thing to do.

To answer the questions posted by Alaska Slim and Obstermaxmaster,

- Perhaps it is better to call the coming Code Geass anime as a new entry in the Code Geass instead of 3rd season. Basically Geass itself means the supernatural power granted to certain people in certain circumstances. This concept can be used in another place and another time. There is in fact a manga that has Code Geass taking place in Edo Period Japan in 19th century. So the new anime will have a Code Geass story in some other time/place.

- Black Rock Shooter currently has only OVA that is just 50 min long. What is being planned is a whole TV season for BRS.

Key observations:
- The new Sengoku Basara movie took the top slot
- Escaflowne BD Box made its debut at high place
- P4 is still doing well in sales even without showing any episode yet
- Working!! season 2 also attracted a lot of advance orders but its first episode at least had been shown in a satellite channel. Seems fans from season 1 are very confident the new season will be a good one.
- PMMM, Steins;Gate and T&B are all going strong. Steins;Gate has even risen in rank, perhaps the recent "god-tier" episodes helped quite a bit here.
- No, your eyes are not being delusional -- Fractale vol.1&2 are indeed roaring back to life to take the #21 and #12 slots respectively!! So Yamakan has the last laugh?!? Not so fast.... Fractale is now undergoing a "wagon sale" with its price cut by 75-80% (!!!). People in 2ch are saying it is not a bad price to get the nendroid of Phyrne and Nessa that came with the "first press limited edition"
- For current season, YuruYuri and Utano Prince-sama are still leading the pack, followed by Natsume Yujincho (and its vol.1 is already released, very quick as the season has not finished yet), MayoChiki and Rokyubu.

One of my favorite moe manga Sankarea will have its anime adaptation! It claims to have started a new sub-genre for moe: Zombie Moe :)

The scanlation group I participate in mentioned Sankarea a few couple times lately.

As I promised Xard in another thread, I have translated the reason for awarding the 2nd MacrossF movie and PMMM in this year's Animation Kobe Awards.

FEATURE FILM AWARD -- MACROSS FRONTIER: SAYONARA NO TSUBASA

"If there had not been △△ in ○○". It is a question that without long years and months past one cannot fill in the blanks. How about putting the words "Japan anime" in ○○ and "Macross" in △△ ? If there had not been Macross in Japan anime, the situation in the anime industry would probably be quite different from now. It boldly featured the element of "songs" as part of the anime contents. The achievement of Macross series in broadening the anime as an entertainment is tremendous. The award to this movie, the final of the 2 movies that could be described as the comprehensive summary of the "Macross F" series which had started as TV series back in 2008, is a confirmation of the quality of the anime work itself, but at the same time, it is also the thankful feelings from Animation Kobe to Director Shouji Kawamori and everyone who was involved with Macross over time. Thank you, Macross.

TV FEATURE AWARD -- PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA

"...and so, since you all will soon become majo (witches), you should be called mahou shoujo". At the moment I heard this dialogue, I felt that I could finally see the world of this work. One young girl embraced hope but soon enough she was engulfed by despair coming in. And to save such a young girl it could be the wish of yet another young girl.... This world of "mahou shoujo" which could not be covered with just dreams or hopes -- Haven't many anime fans been riveted by it? We must also not forget the competent skills from Director Akiyuki Shinbo and Shaft that managed to harmoniously blend the contributions from three sources with strong character: Screenplay by Gen Urobuchi, Original Character Design by Ume Aoki, and Manifestation of the Bewitched Worlds by Gekidan Inu-Curry; and sublimate it into a solidly substantial animation. While incorporating freshness into the story as well as video expression, this anime provided the perfect taste of the real charm of an anime that could only be found in a TV series where every week you really cannot wait to watch what happens next. Thus we believe this anime is best suited for the TV Feature Award.

Thanks! Pretty much what I expected them to be ^_^

I'd like to point out that sales data for Sayonara no Tsubasa BD are not counted under anime but under game category in Amazon.jp because hybrid pack contains game too.

Last years Christmas concert - Macross F 'Merry Christmas Without You' is getting a DVD and Bluray release on November 23!

It's not known whether the footage is from Osaka or Tokyo live at this point. Both shows got very good reviews as far as I can tell from Japanese posts and comments/concert reports by gaijin Macross fans who saw them. It'll be fun to look at the development of May'n and Megumi and compare this release to the Budokan Live BD from 2008!

More:

SPECIAL AWARD 1 -- DIRECTOR OSAMU DEZEKI

The Special Award this year is the first time since the 11th year to be given to 2 parties. The Animation Kobe Award has generally not been given to the deceased, but this time it was the unanimous decision to give this award as an exception to Director Osamu Dezaki who passed way on April 17th this year. Since first directing "Ashita no Joe" at a young age of 26, Director Dezaki gave the world a large number of masterpieces. There is a word "Dezaki Animation" that is often used to describe animation techniques like split-screen or harmony processing [symbv: a technique of using pastel freeze frames]. However, these visual styles are perhaps not the true essence of "Dezaki-ism", which may instead be the emotion that runs through all his works. There is no escaping of the fact that his passionate spirits injected energy into a young medium called animation and stimulated its development. The Kobe Award, where we the chief editors of dedicated anime magazines are the judges, should precisely be the one that gave its affirmation to the achievements of Director Dezaki. So we decided to give this award to Director Dezaki.

INDIVIDUAL AWARD -- MARI OKADA (SCREENPLAY WRITER)

As one could tell by watching her representative works like "true tears" or "Toradora!", there is no doubt about Okada-san's power to skilfully depict human relationships, as well as troubles faced by people, how they are related to the surroundings, and how they confront themselves. And from the viewpoint of quantity of work, Okada-san is active with such an energy that makes one ask "in fact when does she ever go to sleep?". Just in this year, she made the unparalleled feat of taking up series composition or screenplay tasks for 6 animes either concurrently or subsequently including "Gosick", "Fractale", "Hourou Musuko", "Hana-saku Iroha" and "Anohi mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa mada shiranai". Some may even suspect "Mari Okada" is a group made up of several people. Also she showed her versatile talent with "Anohi mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa mada shiranai" by contributing from launching the project to writing the novel. We have high expectation for her future activities! With unanimity we decided to give this award to Okada-san.
I never thought I would come back to Evangelion after EoE,
But I discovered Re-Take (or it found me?) and
now here I am.

I can only be glad both of them really did brought the house down and scored big anywhere, bar none. Methinks of that one-on-one talk between Sheryl and Homura... er, Aya and Chiwa. :D

Oh, and I'm not surprised with the usual girls of the year, with Sheryl being surrounded on top and bottom:

The biggest anime news from Japan besides continuation of news stream of updates on existing shows or franchises, is the large scale release to cinema for an original anime film that is not from Ghibli. It is "Letter to Momo" (momo he no tegami), directed by Hiroyuki Okiura. According to an article in Cinema Today, the film was already given its world premiere in London International Film Festival earlier this year. And this film will be shown in >300 cinemas all over in Japan during the golden week (early May) next year (2012). For comparison, even one of the biggest hit movie of One Piece "One Piece Film - Strong World" was shown only in 188 cinemas.

Hiroyuki Okiura is not only the director, but he is also responsible for the storyboard and the screenplay. Some anime fans may remember Okiura as the director of the famous film "Jin-Roh", as well as character design and animation director of Ghost in the Shall and its sequal Innocence. In fact it is Okiura's first director work since Jin-Roh thirteen years ago. And out of the 13 years, he spent >7 years working on "letter to Momo". (!)

"Letter to Momo" is a film that is very different from the works Okiura is famous for. It is not a cyberpunk science fiction but instead a story based on real life in Japan. It is done from the viewpoint of a 11 year old girl Momo, whose father is dead, who now lives in a small island in Seto Inland Sea. The focus of the film is said to be on love of nature and love within family.

Amazon JP anime BD sales ranking from last weekend

Key observations:
- Toradora BD Box made its debut at #1; Basara movie also made its debut at high place (#5), as is the PreCure Dance Live (#6)
- Steins;Gate made a strong bounce-back after the broadcast of god-tier ep.22 and 23 (ep.24 has yet to air in the last weekend). All volumes jumped many slots upwards and from the published sales figure, all released volumes (vol.1-3) registered big jump in sales.
- Tiger & Bunny (T&B) is still doing well, as is Madoka (PMMM) and to a lesser extent Ano Hana (although volume on volume sales Ano Hana seems to be showing a bigger drop in sales percentage-wise compared to other anime like Steins;Gate or IS)
- P4 is still relatively high (#10)even though no episode has been broadcast yet. Same for Working season 2 (#14).
- YuruYuri is going from strength to strength and is now moving near top 10. The first volume will go on sale on Sep 21. The next popular title for this season's anime is still Utano-Prince-sama and then Natsume Yujincho season 3. At some distance behind is the cluster of KiyoChiki, Rokyubu, IdolMaster, Usagi Drop and PenguinDrum, BakaTest 2, followed by No.6 and Sacred Seven. Kamisama Dolls seems to lag behind so far.
- Great news that the Kimi ni Todoke BD Box has both season 1 and the recently broadcast season 2 !!

Selected news this week from Japan:

NATSUME YUJINCHO 4th season has been announced !! It turns out there is a 4th season planned after all but like Kimi ni Todoke and The World that God Only Knows the anime is broken into 2 cours with a gap of 1 cour in between. So it is another anime for the 2012 Jan season:

Image

==========================

It is reported that from July 16 until Sep 14, the latest film from Ghibli, "Kokuriko-saka kara" has grossed 4.15 billion yen with 3.3 million cinema-goers. This broke the best-grossing domestic movie in 2011 previously kept by the latest Pokemon movie.

In the meantime, Ghibli released a new poster for the movie:
Image

The movie is a story about a high school girl who lived in Yokohama in 1963. Her first love, her school life and her family. The background in Japan is at the junction of the chaos of the immediate post-war period and the rapid economic development in the 60s jump-started by the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Student movements were also in ascendency. The nostalgic appeal may help attract a lot of older generation people who no longer watch anime. It is the 2nd movie directed by Goro Miyazaki after "Tales of Earthsea" 5 years ago.

=============================

Strike Witches movie now starts to have special packages of advanced tickets, to be released in 3 stages:
SPOILER: Show

But what got me really excited is instead the badges. The manufacturer of the coat of arms badges, Tiger EMB, is a supplier which makes badges for US army stationed in Okinawa and Japan Self-Defense Force. And the SW badges are to be made according to actual military standard.

They will be made only with pre-sale orders and application will be open from Oct 05 to Oct 31.

However they are not cheap -- one package of one badge plus one ticket is 4000 yen. To collect the whole set of 11 badges will require 44000 yen !!!

Also, some may have noticed that there are 12 individual silhouettes in the movie poster. A new character will show up in the movie and rumor has it that it will come from Fuso (Japan in SW world).

Key observations:

- Bakemonogatari BD Box stormed to #1 rank after the announcement. In fact it is #1 not only in anime BD ranking chart, but in all genre BD+DVD ranking chart. It even beat the DVD of the last Harry Potter movie!!
Image

- ToraDora BD Box drops to #2 but it is still strong enough to beat PMMM (Madoka) #6 on the week of its release (of course PMMM #6 already got a lot of advanced orders by now). Testament to its lasting popularity.

- All volumes of Tiger & Bunny (T&B) and Steins;Gate BDs jumped up in the chart after the airing of the last episode as both attract very good review and word-of-mouth.

- YuruYuri and Utano Prince move up as well as the series end. YY made it into the top 10. Rokyubu also moved up and this week overtook MayoChiki. The other anime of this season will also be released in this week. It will be very interesting to see how the result turns out.
Image(click for larger image)
Samples of the cover of some anime BD that go on sale this week

- With not a single episode aired yet, P4 is still doing very strong while Working season 2 has dropped in the ranking.

- Hotarubi no Mori e 蛍火の杜へ made its debut in the chart. This one is interesting because the movie is not yet released - it is scheduled to be released on Sep 17 this year. The animation will be made by Brain's Base and the staff from Natsume Yujincho. The manga on which it is based is serialized in LaLa a shoujo manga magazine.
more info: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... anime-film

- The latest Sengoku Basara movie also made its debut in the chart.

Those Strike Witches color patches...they must be making good money off those. A standard color military patch similar to those goes for around 5-7 USD or no more than 550 yen. I imagine they'd charge more for custom commissioned work for a civilian commercial enterprise, but a lot less than that 4000 yen. So those tickets aren't cheap.

 It just sucks when coverage is pretty much limited to North America, and not elsewhere, and sometimes you have to pay for access, and not everyone has a credit card or a dedicated CATV channel.
