This is licensing news, but Jesus tapdancing Christ. I'm a person who actively seeks out bad anime, and this shitshow still left me aghast. And the cover art is downright devious, making it look like a Trigger show. There are going to be blind buyers who are going to get burned by this.

I don't know if any of you have been keeping up with the news. But the director for Kemono Friends was fired. And the news story BLEW THE HELL UP. Outraged fans protested, other staff members quit in solidarity, the president of the company that CREATED Kemono Friends is worried about the brands future.

JESUS. THis must have really struck a nerve with people. Why?

Or boring, perhaps? It failed my TinesPWH-test at any rate. But then I have the impression that my taste in anime is roughly orthogonal to Mr.Tines's!

Episode 3 was where it suddenly leapt from being down in the noise so far as sales and pre-orders went and launched onto a trajectory that had it cruising past even the big name series that season -- the tweet counts alone give an idea of quite how it dominated.

This is really crazy. I'm not a Kenshin fan but it's a big popular shonen battle series. I know quite a few people who grew up adoring it and still do. I mean if you think about it over 90% of anime fans get introduced to the stuff through some shonen battle series. Shows like Dragon Ball in the 90s, Naruto in the early 00's, Full Metal Alchemist in the later 00's or even Attack on Titan recently. Those battle shows for all their flaws really shaped and made those people into who they are today. I'm trying to imagine what I'd be feeling if those important early shonen battle authors I love like Takehiko Inoue or Akira Toriyama had something like this happen. I'd be absolutely devastated.

A pretty unreal feeling this is. I liked RK enough back in the day to actually buy those 28 volumes and have them take space on my bookshelf... But guess I never really "attached" to the work on any deeper level (somehow I don't even classify it as "battle shonen" all that much...) and ended up donating the set to a local anime club library.

Still, I liked RK. Dunno what now. Then again, I learned to be pretty good (somehow feels that it's not so good though) at this author-work separation when I adamantly liked Michael Jackson's music as a kid...

Other fucked up things is, Watsuki is actually married and had 100 disks of that shit at home??

I also remember RK to be relatively free of over-sexualization of any characters, let alone minor ones?
The art of being grown up, the dirty little secret nobody lets on about, is that it's all about getting comfortable with acting the part, and reaching that point where you stop giving a fuck, and do stuff that needs to be done, because it just needs doing, and ain't nobody else going to do it for you. -Mr. Tines

Kenshin was my favorite manga growing up. So this news just took a shotgun to my childhood. This is worse for me than when Cosby got exposed.

EXACTLY! If this had been, I dunno Urobuchi or Horikoshi. I'd have been upset, but I wouldn't have been surprised. Given their work has a lot of fanservice with barely legal characters. But WATSUKI? Rurouni Kenshin had no nudity, barely any fanservice, and only one sex scene. He's the LAST person I'd ever think would be a pedo.

It's... not really comparable to most of that.

Kenshin at least partly grounds itself in reality, has a setting in actual history, and even has a historical figure as a member of its main cast (or at least, re-curring cast).

It borrows greatly from the Jidaigeki dramas; arguably, Nobuhiro Nishiwaki was really just putting his own spin on it, with a message that was resonate, at least at the time "Is Suicide wrong? YES, BECAUSE YOU'RE AVOIDING RESPONSIBILITY!"

Though that's not to say he wasn't bringing anything to his craft, just to point out one example...

I think I should also mention that the main character is positively ancient. 28 years old? Pfft. Jeez grandpa, when you gonna retire and let the younin' 10 year olds save the world, like nature intended?

So, does this revelation about the author change my appreciation of the work at all? Not at all. It's not like he was using Kenshin to profess those preferences; nothing obvious about the work is influenced by it, so why should it matter?

http://anime.heros-ultraman.com/

The extremely excellent Ultraman reboot manga is getting an anime. Can't wait to hear people call Ultraman references Evangelion references!

-Edit- Actually now that I think about it this might have an opportunity to come full circle. "Ultraman" is a suit worn by an individual in this that helps him fight and grow in a mecha like fashion. Ultraman in recent years has kind of had a circle of referencing things it influenced. In Ultraman Zero he uses a move from Kinnikuman and Kinnikuman started out as an Ultraman parody! Who knows, but I'll be watching for sure.

No primary sources, but /a/ is celebrating the announcement of a Back Street Girls adaptation : http://moetron.news/post/168065646960/b ... -announced

A group of 3 yakuza failed their boss for the last time. After messing up an important job, the boss gave them 2 choices: Honorably committing suicide, or go to Thailand to get a sex reassignment surgery in order to become “female” idols. After a gruesome year long training to become idols, they successfully debut, with overwhelming popularity, much to their dismay. This is where their tragedy truly begins.

I don't know, where else this would fit, but Anno shared his playlist with the world. As expected, oldschool anime openings galore.

It's the second time in three years that it happens. He's probably ending the manga too: he dropped some plot bombs before going in hiatus.

:woohoo:

Maybe we'll finally get closure about that plot point they left wide open for a sequel!
