Wow. How much does Funi usually have to pay in order to get U.S. release right to Japanese film or television?

While we are speculating wildly on companies' lives and deaths, what ever happened to http://www.japanator.com/rumor-gainax-and-evangelion-remakes-splitting-up--15139.phtml ?

Going through my old Wikipedia edits, I came across it from last year and it made an interesting annotation to the biography of Yasuhiro Kamimura in The Notenki Memoirs, but I strongly disagree with Shunji's prediction about Gainax's health.

On the other hand, looking inside my CSE, I did find one new thing about Kamimura: http://gainax.fr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1070:yasuhiro-kamimura-je-2011-interview-exclusive&catid=37&Itemid=227

If my highschool French and Google Translate do not fail me, this specifically says Kamimura is a former Gainaxer (his wife as well). Further, he did leave to run the Groundworks copyright company (we can thank him for the Eva 2.0 DoCoMo cellphones and probably the glasses as well), and also handle one of Anno's wife's manga licensing too. Interesting.

.... Still not going to see this. Disappointed with Speed Racer and Dragon Ball Evolution. Never is there a true live adaptation of an Anime show...

Well, since then it seems that at least Imaishi and Tsurumaki have left Gainax.

Really? Where were they discussed? (Looking, I see nothing on ANN, Wikipedia, Evageeks wiki, TvTropes, my CSE, or a time-limited Google search for Tsurumaki.)

Rather than try and summarise, here's a link to WETA's Evangelion concept art for context.

On /a/, with a number of tweets cited. Also, their names are absent from the English language Gainax staff page.

This is important if true. Can you give more specific specifics?

According to various crap that's been thrown around at cons - R1 distributors apparently have to sell around 5,000 - 15,000 DVDs simply to make up for just the licensing fee. I've seen more ridiculous claims that it cost nearly as much to license a show as it does to produce it.

It's all down in the rumour noise level, but there isn't anything firm to contradict it

There was a whole lot of activity from mid-June -- highlights like

WETA did some preproduction concept art for it back in like 2004 when ADV tried to pull it off back then.Despite what some people will try and say that is all they did, they are a special effects company not an actual movie company so any input regarding plot/story,character devolpment/casting,etc. anything like that they had no hand in plain and simple. They dont put the money out there to get it into production either, they just got hired to do some concept art for a potential movie, one that will prob never get made seeing as its been like almost a decade since.Let alone have anything to do with it anymore WETA did theyre work and they got paid and the work ended its not their fault.

Well Tsurumaki left Gainax years ago together with Anno and Masayuki. I heard they have their own company now.

But the rumor currently going around is that Imaishi, Yoshinari, Otsuka and Sushio have all left. Then there's the question if Nishigori and the rest of the staff from Gainax will return after Idolmaster is finsihed. In a worst case scenario almost all of the notable staff have left.

According to washi/ワゴンの神様 Imaishi is at Khara now and Sushio was one of the people present at the recent Eva exhibition at the Shotaro Ishinomori museum but I'm not sure it means that much becuase they would work on Q (thus at Khara) wether they were employed by Gainax or Khara or somewhere else. As for Yoshinari going to I.G. It would make sense for him to have worked on Hiroyuki Okiura's new movie there since he worked on Jin-Roh but aside from that it sounds a bit strange...

But that they have left is likely to be true since the rumor started with a blog post by a Gainax employee who proabably should have attempted clear up any misunderstandings he would have caused by now.

The live action boogiepop phantom movie was good even if it had a very different feel from the anime.

I thought the first Death Note movie and the second Guyver movie was decent. I would still like to see this movie get made one day, rather it be done by a Japanese studio though.

They did have creative control with LOTR, due to Peter Jackson being the director and part Executive Producer, and that's what many were hoping would happen with Evangelion. It either be directed by someone from WETA or another they knew who understood it, and Joseph Chou as a producer seemed a promising prospect.

View Original Postshaneva002 wrote:they just got hired to do some concept art for a potential movie,

I don't believe they were hired to do the art, the story goes they went to GAINAX with the proposal, not the other way around.

They did end up signing a contract to *eventually* make a trilogy, but I'm guessing that had a clause somewhere about finding studio support.

View Original Postshaneva002 wrote:one that will prob never get made seeing as its been like almost a decade since.Let alone have anything to do with it anymore WETA did theyre work and they got paid and the work ended its not their fault.

Debatable, they intentionally sidelined Evangelion, first because King Kong was green lit, then because Halo was stalled and they were forced to take on "gravy" projects to make up for all that they had invested in it.

View Original PostGuyver Spawn wrote:I would still like to see this movie get made one day, rather it be done by a Japanese studio though.

Do not want, to be produced in Japan would mean wooden acting, and something only well known in Japan, as Eva already is.

I'm also interested to see what WETA could do with it.

I hear that BS all the time, SHOW ME officially where they "signed on" to do a trilogy. They would've had creative control over everything effects related nothing with story, again show me where they signed on to do script/casting stuff like that.Plus ADV was doing the movie,WETA was hired to do concept art and eventually do the special effects if it was made with Joseph Chou as a producer and Matt Greenfield was trying to direct it lol your hero Peter Jackson was never gonna touch this movie.Yes maybe if PJ signed on as directer they wouldve been more involved but that was just fan wank and speculation and nothin more.

Since the EVA Anime movie Quad-logy(correct term?) is still going on, I do not think an EVA Live Action Movie will be coming out anytime soon(if ever).

The GAINAX folks will still be cashing-in from the Quad-logy at the moment & releasing a L.A.M. will just clash with the merchandising & sales of the Quad DVDs.... most of the hardcore Anime fans are opposed to a L.A.M. of EVA, so it might destroy the market as well....it's only an opinion....

sounds like the case. And a bit off topic a series of four films can either be called a Quadrilogy or a Tetralogy.
