Anime from 2004 onward

Hey, was wondering if you ladies and gentlemen could help me find some animes to watch. I'm a bit inexperienced (and lazy) at finding animes - just make some suggestions and that'd be great! I'm trying also to go more recent..like 2004 onwards?

Genres
Mecha
Comedy
Action
High-school

They all don't have to be combined, but ones with combinations of the genres would be great.

Thanks!

Why only from 2004 onwards? I can name an excellent, underrated anime from the 90s that hits all of your first three points at once: Martian Successor Nadesico.

Full Metal Panic! meets all those requirements. Although only the first season hits all four, season 2 is pure slap-stick and season 3 is mainly mecha action. Unfortunately, season 1 is also the weakest of all the seasons.

Well, this is pretty simple equation

Image
notice that most of early to mid 90s anime are short OVAs of rather dubious quality, tv productions go up in post-eva boom

Post-00 there's simpy much more anime being made which means there's more good series out every year than in the past. The whole modern scheme for tv anime is post-Eva creation anyway - early 00s wasn't that good time for tv anime (2004 or so saw clear increase in good series being made)

2006-2008 were the best years for anime in last decade in my opinion. 2008 in particular.

Here's chart for 2001 anime:

Image

I see four series I actually consider good: Arjuna, Noir, Fruits Basket and Banner of the Stars II (last I haven't seen but it's supposedly great)

I can name far more good anime from later years. TV anime wasn't significantly better or worse in early-00s than it is today.

Anime, like every other form of media, has been consistently shit with a few shinning gems, ever since its conception. We've just traded one form of exploitation for another. Although, bad anime in the 80s and 90s were at least more entertaining than bad anime today.

ITT: Xard opens up age-old debate of old anime vs new anime quality.

There's no point in arguing this, but I'll just throw out a couple of opinions.

Whenever people start watching anime is typically going to be the period of time they identify (with nostalgia) as being "the best" period of anime. I started watching anime a decade ago, so mid-late 90s shows are my favorite. People who started watching anime in 2008 are going to think mid mid-late 2000s shows are the best.

Just because the industry is able to produce more anime now doesn't equate to more good anime. It just means they are producing more anime.

If something is an OVA it isn't necessarily of dubious quality. OVAs were popular back then. By the same regard you could say that TV shows or ONAs are of dubious quality now. The "quality" is based solely on perception. It's just what happens to be the popular medium at the time.

The modern scheme for TV anime is not based on Eva, as far as I know. I don't even understand what that means. If you mean scheme as in 26 episode series + movie, well they've been doing that since well before Eva. If you mean a deconstruction of a previously established genre, well, most series don't do this or don't do it well. Eva is really an anomaly in terms of its quality, depth, popularity, and lasting appeal.

With the moeblob boom of recent years, I'd say that quality has decreased significantly in post-2004. But that's just how I define (or rather don't) quality.

So, in summary HURP DURP DEE DURRRR.

I give you that, I find shitty OVAs more enjoyable than shitty tv series partly simply because they take less time to watch. But then again, no year from 90s compares in terms of quality TV anime to late00s.

Good old days of tv anime have never existed in the first place

So, in a sense you can’t really compare TV anime from now to anything before 1998, beacuse there was both no bad and no good shows back then because there were well, no shows period. If we compare apples to oranges and compare series now with OVAs then, things are actually pretty terrible for the old school. Generally, there are only at most one or two good OVAs each year, but there were OVA after OVA of panty and nipple shows with a few gore porn shows tossed in with them. I laughed as I started scrolling through the early 90s at anidb where OVA after OVA was tagged like “ecchi pantsu nudity huge breasts boing”.

Once you start at around 1998, then things get a little more interesting because you can compare apples to apples. First off, if you look at absolutes, both then and now are both better and worse. You’d be able to say that back then was better because it had less crap or worse because it had fewer good shows, and vice versa for nowadays. If you use a proportional look, they match up pretty evenly. Back then might be SLIGHTLY better than now simply because of the diminishing returns of having so many more TV anime nowadays than there were back then. There are sometimes more shows in a season now as there were in an entire year back around 2000.

Then, the other important consideration is how you’re defining good and bad. Is it the proportion of good shows to total shows? Good shows to bad shows? Proportion of bad shows to total shows? The absolute number of good or bad shows? While I said above that you can’t compare between seasons directly using absolutes, there is something for saying that when you look at a season and “everything crap” or that there are “so many good shows I can’t watch them all.”

As for my criterion for saying recent years have been best years for anime

So completely unscientifically comparing the first half to the second half of the 1998-2009 period, here are some conclusions:

1) It seems like most of the growth occured in the middle of the “goodness” continuum, where most of the shows were either niche shows or forgettable throwaway shows. There were diminishing returns both for quality and QUALITY In other words, if you had 33 shows, you might have 6 good shows, 3 bad shows, and 24 middling shows. If you went up to 100 shows, you’d end up with maybe 15 good shows, 5 bad shows, and 80 forgettable ones.

2) Now is better than then if you look at the absolute number of good shows, since you’d ignore mediocre shows that will be forgotten in a few months anyway.

3) Then was better in terms of the ratios of good to bad as there was most likely less bottom-scraping since it was a much smaller market.

4) Now is worse than then if you look at the absolute number of bad shows. You’ll forget the mediocre shows, but truly terrible ones will be remembered.

5) Then was worse than now if you look at the proportion of bad shows to total shows.

And if you really do want to say that “Now” means now while “then” meant 15+ years ago, now is such much better than then in every way.

I follow the bolded.

1998

Berserk
Cardcaptor Sakura
Cowboy Bebop
El-Hazard
Giant Robo OVA
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Lost Universe
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Oh My Goddess!
Outlaw Star
Perfect Blue
Record of Lodoss War
Serial Experiments Lain
Trigun

I think 1998 crushes 2011 in terms of quality anime.

EDIT: I forgot Trigun.

It's not based on Eva, but it exists because of Eva. Pre-Eva TV anime was basically two things, family shows and toy commercials. Eva showed that it's possible for late-night anime to be profitable and basically helped put the final nail in the OVA based distribution system, ushering in the transition to the modern TV anime system where OVAs are mostly secondary material as most things that would previously be relegated to an OVA are now late-night anime.

@Xard:
90% are still crud.

Edit: My reaction when I saw that Brik's 1998 list doesn't include Trigun. But 08th MS Team doesn't count because it was released in 1996 and only the last episode was finally finished later and wasn't released proper, until I want to say 1999 not 1998.

First of all I have to say that 1998 is extraordinary year in anime history and in my opinion one of the best ones (and yes, it's better than 2011 has been so far. Which in turn doesn't mean this year has been bad one either). But some of the entries here aren't fair:

View Original PostBrikHaus wrote:Giant Robo OVA
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team

These are all OVA series that run for years and as such do not count as "1998" anime.

And thanks to Cosmo Warrior Zero Gaiden, Arjuna wasn't even that year's most psychedelic show. Personally, I see quite a few decently entertaining shows on that chart, like Angelic Layer, Rune Soldier, Zone of the Enders (look at that cock!), and heck, even Vandread S2, which is a rare not-entirely-worthless mecha show by GONZO. And Hikaru no Go was not bad for an endless shounen series.

I thought the original run of OVAs (which was 1988 to 1997) was finally broadcast on TV in '98.
