So, the new Fallout New Vegas DLC, Old World Blues comes out on the 19th of this month so I might as well make this a Fallout general thread.
The DLC itself is going to feature some interesting content that was going to be in previous Fallout games as well as Fallout NV but for some reason or other got cut out of the game.
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Old_World_Blues
This includes Lobotomites who do actually appear in a loading screen in Fallout 1. :)
Overall I'm very pleased by how much Fallout New Vegas has gone back to the series' roots, hopefully Bethesda learns some lessons from the guys at Obsidian when Bethesda develops Fallout 4.

Re: [Video Games] Fallout
Well, Obsidian actually has plenty of people who worked on original Fallouts (2 in particular)...
I think NV blows 3 away, personally.
The first game I actually found rather dull (that interface has NOT aged well), and haven't played enough of 2 to notice all that much of a difference from the first really.

Funny, I've had New Vegas sitting right here on this table next to me since I got it back on ... Christmas...
Prior to that I had been playing Fallout 3. I stopped playing when I started to feel like a lab hamster in a skinner box, always going for the next shiny thing without ever feeling much of a reason to beyond base bubble-wrap-style satisfaction. In fallouts before 3, I was kept constantly engaged by the stories and characters I encountered (not to mention the presentation, which I liked better for various reasons), but 3 doesn't have that same level of quality in those areas. That's a drastic oversimplification (I haven't played the old ones recently enough to recall what other factors contribute to my preference) but that's what comes off the top of my head.
I keep hearing good things about NV (including its similarities to older entries) so I'll have to give it a try inevitably, but as for now I've got plenty enough occupying my time. Heh, but if it's really good I'll probably get around to this game close to a year after I got it and be going "Why didn't I start playing this sooner?!"
EDIT: Further thoughts:
I guess with FO1 and FO2 I felt a lot more engaged in the story my character was weaving, in part because of the presentation style: With the camera pulled so far back and the graphics being so bad and most of the action being abstracted to the point of being merely described and not shown, it was easier to paint him and his encounters with my imagination. I had particular ways I thought of my Vash or my Knives as speaking, moving, looking... In FO3 it's a lot harder to ignore how my character actually looks because he's rendered in such finer detail (when I see him at all). Being able to see my character from third person (yet still being able to imagine him looking the way I want, and also without the gameplay being crap from that perspective) is also very important for allowing me to feel connected to them and their story, vs just feeling like it's me (my regular old boring self) traipsing around doing things in a virtual playground where I know there are no real consequences that will accrue to myself.
There's lots of other little things that the first games do that 3 doesn't, but that was the first (extra) example that came to mind.

Actually I'm had a lot of trouble finding perks worth taking since I focused on guns but never use vats. Ended up with a lot of convenience and utility stuff because almost none of the combat perks do anything for me at all.

Ughh!!
I used to get lost in the smaller ones
I can just see me now in the middle of the vault with a ton of cool/valuable loot and I won't know where the exit is
Either way I can still appreciate the time they must have put into this.

Old World Blues is just plain awesome so far. Perhaps a little heavy on the dialog right at the start but otherwise lots of fun to be had. I'm not too wild about any of the new perks though.

I made a second character for New Vegas, but this time I just killed everyone I ran into. I think I'm beyond the point of no return in terms of being able to continue the story.

I wonder what Barthes would think of games like Bioshock.

It's impossible to screw the game up that badly because all the really important people (and at least one merchant) are unkillable. It will probably end up being just you, random spawning mooks and like 4 other people in the whole desert though.

Just finished it the other day. Pretty awesome, although pretty long for a $10 DLC. Implant M-5 and Reinforced Spine are nice perks but they're awarded perks and not standard perks. Also, the stealth suit is both awesome and completely horrible.
SPOILER: Show
Also, going in at level 12 with a gun based character is not very fun, had to resort to picking up the proton axe for most enemies. P.S. Fuck the Legendary Bloat Fly and his plasma spitting stinger.
I did that, made a 10 str, 10 end, 10 agi, 1 int, 1 per, 1 cha, 7 luck [ableist insult redacted] and named him Bob, I then ran around with a roving trader outfit and a lead pipe killing everything I saw. I still managed to get the Independent Vegas ending.

I miss when Bethesda games (yeah I know Obsidian made New Vegas but it's basically Fallout 3.5 so it's still half Bethesda's game) simply let you kill critical NPCs but put in extremely convoluted back doors so you could still complete the game a la Morrowind.

Why they don't keep the newer games like is lost on me. That sounds much better and more immersing than just having critical NPCs go unconscious.
And it's good to hear I can still complete the game. I'll just have to begrudgingly cooperate with certain characters.

My biggest issue with Fallout 3 is its lack of substantial history for the area it's in, it doesn't factor in well with the date it's set in.
The Mojave Wasteland and California are far more organised and advanced than the Capital Wasteland, consider the fact that NV is based in 2285 while F3 was in 2277. So, what the fuck were they doing in the East? I can understand areas like Pittsburgh and Maryland, but the Capital Wasteland itself is pretty primitive in areas with the only significant events since Washington got nuked. Those being the Vault 101 expeditions, the arrival of the Brotherhood of Steel establishing themselves at the pentagon, Project Purity and the eventual birth of the Lone Wanderer and the subsequent series of events after his dad leaves Vault 101.
I understand the previous Fallout games building up the history for the west, it being more established in Fallout canon. But they should of added a more detailed history for the Capital Wasteland if they were going to set it 200 years after the bombs fell.
On the subject of NPC's being critical to the main missions and being set as essential: I personally don't see a problem with it, it's just game mechanics, besides, most NPC's you encounter don't have this mechanic aside from the few children and the characters critical to missions. Hell, there are plenty of mods to stop NPC's being tagged as essential.

I believe the in universe explanations are: 1) Washington (and the east coast in general) was basically carpet nuked so it took longer for people to come out of the vaults and survive; 2) More infighting among survivors on the east coast. 3) The Enclave and its "genetic purity" mission keeping people who weren't the BoS from building up.
And the gap really isn't unrealistic. Unless you think history was poorly written and went against its own canon when Europe managed to be far more advanced than the American native tribes. Separated societies evolve separately. Figuring out how to rebuild society in an irradiated waste wouldn't be any different.

I like what New Vegas did. Either make them respawing or make them inaccessible unless you glitch into their area.
Anywho:
Starting a new character.
Name: Mari
Gender: Female
Stats: 3S, 8P, 3E, 5C, 8I, 6A, 7L
Traits: Four Eyes, Kamikazi
T.A.G: Energy Weapons, Science, Medicine Edit: I decided Science and Medicine were for pussies so I rebuilt to Explosives and Unarmed instead.
Hardcore: Yes
Difficulty: Hard
Other: Either going to go Independent Vegas or NCR route, going to kill every single member of The Legion I possibly can, and going to do the whole game in a Merc Charmer Outfit with no helmet. (Yeah I know that without any perks I will have -1 DT from Kamikazi, don't care!)
