Tanabata is still very much celebrated in Japan and is a popular theme in manga (and a lot of slice-of-life anime). I still remember the office building where I worked in Tokyo always put up bamboo shoots in their lobby for people to write their wishes and hang there....

I also want to point out that China also has Tanabata 七夕 (pronounced as Qi Xi in Putonghua/Mandarin) but in China we follow the LUNAR CALENDAR so instead of 7th day of the 7th month of the Solar Calendar, in China is the 7th day of the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar. This year it falls to 6 Aug 2011 so a bit later than the Japanese date. For details, check

I happened to go to my city's Japanese Garden on the 7th. They had this Tanabata event going on there, so I took a look at it. It was aimed at children, but the volunteers there were to my surprise Japanese (perhaps they were from the university since my city doesn't have that many Japanese I don't think) and some of them were pretty hawt. :)
