Anyway, I've only recently noticed
this disc on your database; I suppose that it's pretty much the "holy grail" of the Evangelion home video, isn't it?
Meh. If it had any original video content, I'd be more impressed with it. Here's a review of the disc from the old mailing list (spoilered due to length)
Neon Genesis Evangelion Special Disc
Catalogue number DVD-JJDDEVP, promotional only - not
for sale, approximately 34 minutes, region 2 DVD.
As with other Japanese DVD releases of Evangelion,
this Panasonic DVD comes in a jewel case. The cover
is basically a collage of the artwork for the first 4
Japanese volumes if I'm not mistaken. The disc starts
with the OP without credits before coming to the main
menu. The menu system is the same system used for the
other Japanese Eva DVDs. From the main menu, there
are 4 choices:
- Angels: this sub-menu allows you to view a short
clip from the TV series relating to each of the 17
Angels. The clip itself only takes up 1/4 of the
screen. The rest of screen just gives the name of
the Angel, and what it's the Angel of (eg Angel in
relation to water etc). There's no clip for the 2nd
Angel - it's just stated to be unknown. For the clips
for Angels 3-16, the relevant dialogue and sound
effects have been replaced by the Angel Attack BGM.
- Military items: this sub-menu gives you a short clip
from the TV series relating to 14 various Eva weapons,
mecha etc. Again, the clip only takes up 1/4 of the
screen. However, the rest of the screen gives a
written description about the particular item.
- Characters: this sub-menu gives you a short clip of
17 of the characters from the series. The clips are
full screen this time. For each character, there are
3 clips (only 2 clips each for Hikari and Aoba, I
think) - each time you click on the character, one of
the 3 clips is played at random. I don't think
there's anyway to select the clips within a character
or view the clips within a character sequentially.
- Next episode trailers: this sub-menu just contains
the 15 second TV broadcast next episode trailers for
episodes 2-24. There's no next episode trailer for
episode 1 of course, but the pre-broadcast ad for the
series is also included. These trailers are also
shown full screen.
That's it. Although the DVD is stated to be roughly
34 minutes long, it's basically a collection of
roughly 100 short clips from the TV series (each not
more than 15-20 seconds in length), which are accessed
separately from the menu rather than being played as
one continual item.
All text on this DVD is in Japanese (with only the
occasional English word).
