2.0 just adds worse(!!!!!!) integrated CGI and boringly dark, shadowy art direction on what was already visual perfection. Basically Oshii wanted to make GitS look more like Innocence which I don't really understand or approve of (though Innocence itself is, of course, beautiful film)

Go with the basic, unaltered GitS

Are you talking about Ghost in the shell 2.0? That's pretty much an HD upgrade, redone a few scenes and some CG. It looks a little nicer and if you're just into the story, I'd say watch the 2.0. If you want to see oldschool animation, watch the original. The SAC and SSS stuff are all new.

Hmm, who do I trust? :chinscratch:

I think I'll go oldschool.

Well, you could do comparison pics and choose:

Up is 2.0, down is original. As you can see 2.0's "art upgrade" was largerly case of digital painting everything, making everything way darker and shadowy and adding a shitton of blatant CGI to movie that is famous for its stunning integration of CG with other footage (when I first saw GitS I thought for a moment it was 100% hand drawn). I'm also simply not too keen on the Innocensed art direction in general.

What seals the deal for me personally would be inclusion of fugly CGI Motoko like this:

Watch the original...you'll feel better about yourself.

And since you're looking into old school...don't forsake some of the stuff that came out in the 80's. It was pretty cool.....IMO

My guiding philosophy when watching anime. I always get a little pang of guilt if I find out that a show I've watched was a manga before it was an anime.

I dont mind finding out....it gives me the sense of continuity. There's always some variation in the story line. I like to compare them.

That's true, but going through the media out of order just feels... wrong, in some way. It's not like I lose sleep over it or anything; it just bothers me for a bit. I think I'm a bit too particular about this stuff....

As for GitS, I'm still wondering whether or not to read the manga before watching all of it. I think someone here may have mentioned that it's not worth reading. I've also heard that one should even skip the movie and go straight to the series.

Equally, there are those who will tell you to avoid the series in favour of the movies (something to do with a distracting amount of fan-service in the first series, as I recall).

Shinryaku! Ika Musume.

If ever there was an antidote to real life, it's this show. It's adorable, funny, and refreshingly low on fanservice. De geso.

A word of warning, many fansubs, and even the official subs (such as the ones from Crunchyroll and even the DVD) replace all the "de geso"s with terrible sea-based puns. Also the dub is horrible. If you're going to watch this show, watch it subbed.

The show is worth it for "Ebi ebi, geso geso!" alone.
Here lies Squigsquasher.

Bubblegum Crisis

Well, it was only mentioned by name, but I'll take advantage and say why I would recommend it:
Bubblegum Crisis, the original OVA, is one of the many OVAs released in Japan in their glory decade of the 1980s.
This show isn't innovative: it isn't "original", or "groundbreaking". It is episodic as hell, and lacks a well defined story. But it is awesome. As simple as that.

SPOILER: Show
Image
Sexy, badass heroines with awesome power suits and motorcycles. Could one ask for any more?

It's production values are top notch, especially for its time: the animation, the glorious 80s music, the art, the mechanical designs, are all superb. The setting is also very neat, as it is this dystopian Blade Runner-esque (for those wondering: Blade Runner was one of the primary influences of this show in a lot of aspects of this show), hi-tech megalopolis recovering from a catastrophic earthquake that turned Tokyo into rubble.

SPOILER: Show
Image
Oh no, not at all, Mr. McNichol.

And let's not forget the characters, who are not just visually appealing, but they themselves are highly memorable, despite their lack of significant development: Priss, the moody, angry rocker; Sylia, the wise, calculating, ruthless ice queen; Linna, the bland, "normal" of the bunch; and Nene, the cute, sweet, bubbly girl who tries her best. Again, while they lack true, or rather, character development of which we are used to (Priss, while going through many experiences and basically being the MC, really doesn't change by the time the series "ends"), they are quite memorable and relatable. Not to mention that their interaction can be pretty fun.

SPOILER: Show
Image
Oh, Nene, Nene, Nene, you are so cute. I still wonder why so many people hate you.

The animation, once again, is one of its best aspects.

SPOILER: Show
Image Image Image Image
Unfortunately, most of these are lame examples of one or two frames, but that's because imgur sucks for not allowing me to browse all images and get the good gifs the only way you will really see this is by watching the OVA.

The animation and sound improves as the OVA progresses.

The mechanical designs is also one of the best aspects, with Shinji Aramaki (Macross), Kenichi Sonoda (who made the hardsuits and the character designs), Hideki Kakinuma (Gall Force: Eternal Story) and Masami Obari the God the man in person, who also directed two episodes himself, which are considered "the best" by most of the BGC fandom.

SPOILER: Show
Image
Based Aramaki shall forever be best.

Image
Priss is so beautiful she's mai waifu.

Image
Once again, imgur fails totally and doesn't let me post the good, full-color images of the D.D., the K-12S and the Motoslave docked with Priss.

tl;dr This show is awesome and I highly recommend it. Naysayers shall say it's "dated", and I completely agree, but it's a great, fun ride, with cool characters, great visuals, nice action, awesome music and top-tier art.
