What with zero's?

Why is the zero such a popular number in anime?
Gundam Wing: Gundam Zero
Pilot Candidate: Rei Enna "Zero"
Evangelion: Unit Zero
Zoids: Liger Zero

You guys can probably name more.

So what's the deal with its popularity?

Its chaotic. It isn't negative or positive.

I guess it is somewhat "cool" since it is the initial point. (Which does kind of make sense in NGE i.e. Unit-00 being the first successful Evangelion, and its designated pilot, Rei, having the soul of Lilith, the mother of mankind.)

IIRC, in Japan "Zero" is often used to denote a prototype.

Zero is perhaps out most important number. It is the basis of all modern number systems, of which base 10 and base 2 are the most important.

It also begins with a Z.

Maybe zero just sounds cool?

They do that in anime sometimes you know. Put stuff in just for the sake of coolness, and for some deeper meaning.

zero represents the number of times people who watch anime get laid.

The Zero-Model in Evangelion.

Might it have something to do with genetics?

 funny but not everyone who watches anime are losers... I am, but that's besides the point. an on topic, I always just thought until 00 was called that because it was the prototype. then when they made a real evangelion it would be the first one. thus unit 01. I know that unit 01 was the test type but it's damn near good enough to be called a 'real' evangelion.
The Real Ending to Evangelion~~
Rei goes insane!!~~
~Rei is hope.. the hope that people will one day be able to understand each other, and Kaworu is the words... "I Love You". I think they are two beings that will always be watching over everything~
