It all started because the Diebuster song is similar to the Soviet anthem. But it's not just communism Gainax "likes":

Here's a few-- this is a building in Gunbuster 2. Mamimi also wears a red star shirt in FLCL. The Gunbuster theme sounds a hell of a lot like the Soviet national anthem. More tenuous: in both FLCL and Gunbuster 2, Tsurumaki conceived of a Fraternity of soldiers/pilots who don't have ranks-- sort of a socialist mentality.

I think there's a marked difference between the military otaku references like the He is My Master one above (also military otaku in Otaku no Video, Keisuke in Evangelion, and the delirious military detail in every Gainax anime) and the communist references, though.

Gainax Pages has a new forum as of yesterday, btw.

For details sake, the Soviet Anthem is actually "The International", a socialist anthem used as a theme by many socialists of different stripes. It was co-opted by the Soviet goverment, and these days not too many people play it.

Besides, it's incredibly long and boring.

... the USSR used the International as its anthem only until 1944, when it was replaced with a home-grown one, "Hymn to the Soviet Union", which is the one all russians know (it's still used today, but with different non-communist lyrics).

Oh, right. Heard that little detail a few years ago, but forgot. Thanks for the reminder.
