Berserk is on hiatus, what is a new dad to do while baby sleeps and there's a moment of time that does not need to be used for my own sleep or chores? (as mind-blowing as that sounds, yeah...) New dad starts reading JoJo's Bizarre Adventure from the beginning, of course!

It's .... Mostly hilarious so far.
The art of being grown up, the dirty little secret nobody lets on about, is that it's all about getting comfortable with acting the part, and reaching that point where you stop giving a fuck, and do stuff that needs to be done, because it just needs doing, and ain't nobody else going to do it for you. -Mr. Tines

Funny you posted that. I just worked my way through all of Berserk, starting Saturday night and finishing yesterday. The first 150 chapters or so were perfection, the series goes down from 5/5 to 4/5 for the next 175, but still great

"Absolutely. The will to make oneself completely free. Will is the wrong word, because in the end you could call it despair. It's quite different, many different mobile suit designs to the ones in CCA proper, it's a direct adaptation of Tomino's novel, the Sazabi is replaced with the Nightingale, the Nu Gundam eventually gets replaced by the Hi-Nu Gundam and so on. It's more in depth too, that says nothing about style or subtance of course, but it's not fully released yet anyway.

My Hero Academia is easily one of the best Shonen out there right now.

It actually cares about continuity and keeps character development consistent.

Drifters by Kouta Hirano. It's very... meh. I expected more since I liked Hellsing, but for some reason... I don't know, I'm just not into it.

Dungeon Seeker (manga) by Mizukiyoshi Juro. Reads like a badly written, revenge fanfiction.

Goblin Slayer (manga) by Kōsuke Kurose. The best of the three. Kinda edges into "tries too hard" territory. Looks up to big brother Berserk.
Lurk, Work, Twerk...

This summer I was reading Mohiro Kitoh's latest, Futago no Teikoku. However, it hasn't been officially translated, and the scanlator I've been following in order to read it seems to have dropped it after the first volume. If any of you guys know the name of someone who could help me, feel free to drop a line.
In the meantime, I'm reading another manga by him, Noririn, which is about bike racing.

It takes place in a fantasy world that has elements of Japanese-occupied China in the 1930s. The dominant superpower is the Kou Empire, who are using their fleet of flying battleships (we'll get to that in a bit) to basically take over all the countries around themselves. These countries are collectively referred to as "The Continents".
One of the people who was driven out of his homeland by the Kou Empire is a teenage boy named Gaw. He's one of the last surviving members of a culture called the People of the Empty Mist, and they invented something called the Sky Container (a sort of magical whatchamacallit that makes objects like ships fly). So now he and his friend--a girl named Fa, who's been cursed to kill anyone who touches her--are looking for the last remaining survivors of Gaw's people so he can remove Fa's curse.

Terra Formars

It's bad I mean really bad. I don't consider myself one of those people who is especially politically correct or easily offended. But this thing is just awful.

This thing is something that would exist if Japan and Germany won World War 2. It's basically attack of the alien black men. That's a deal-breaker. But knowing Japan I decided to give it a chance. I wish I hadnt. It gets worse as it goes on. None of the characters are especially deep, the logic and science behind it is just bafflingly stupid. I couldn't find a single one of the characters compelling.

And again the fact that the main antagonists are basically racist caricatures. I mean I wouldn't even mind the character designs that much if they actually had personality. But they dont. Your sincerely associating a lovecraftian nihilistic threat with a racist caricature of black people! Lovecraft himself would probably applaud that.

There are few series I actually hate. Even series with some things I disagree with, I don't hate them.

But this thing!? I want to f****** castrate this manga with a pair of pliers and then throw it into the incinerator. I want to burn my computer because I've sullied my search history. The only hope you can get from this is to cringe yourself to death.

Look I know this is from Japan and they do not have the history with racism and Prejudice we have here in the states. But WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. F*CK!?

TLDR

It's bad the worst kinds of ways, don't even give it the time of day.

Now if you don't mind I'm off to find something to wash the taste out of my mouth, and the images from my brain.

The Gods Lie:

No gods, no monsters, no magical girls, no ghosts (not the supernatural kind anyway). Just a nice, short, gentle, innocent, but suprisingly dramatic one-volume romance Manga that deals with some pretty heavy real world issues. Such as growing up and dealing with real life issues before you should have to, abandonment, fear of judgement, and a nostalgia for a childhood that can't be reached again.

An eleven year old by lies to his mom and ditches summer camp to spend a month living with a girl he has a crush on. But something is very odd about her. She's suprisingly cold and distant for a 12 year old . . . even to her little brother, she's very thrifty with money. to the point of it being an obsession, and her clothes are for a girl several years younger than her.

I don't want to give the twist away, as it's pretty much the climax of the story. But lets just say, it gets really emotional and heavy before the end. I had no expectations, and I was blown away.

Wandering Island:

A story about a girl who runs an airplane delivery service trying to fufill her dead guardians final wish, to solve a mystery. To prove an Urban Legend about a fantastic 'lost island' is true. and deliver the one package her grandfather couldn't. A mystery on the high seas.

Mikura (the main character) is pleasant enough, but what really sells it is how smart her character is and how she approaches problems. She really works her detective skills trying to find proof of something everyone tells her doesn't exist.

She tries to find the island by looking up sightings and rumors of it from the past and charting a map. That doesn't work. So she consults one of her college professor about ocean currents and adjusts her search accordingly, that doesn't work until. She finally finds the stupid Island, only to have her plane get damaged, making her have to turn back to avoid being stranded in the middle of the ocean.

What really sells this book is the atmosphere. There are whole pages where the book just takes time to let you relax and soak in the experience of the high seas, of flying over a large stretch of ocean, of cloud layers and stormclouds on the horizon, the sun.

It does have a LOT of nudity in it. But it never comes off as sleazy, or fanservicey. It comes off more as functional. When your Job involves the ocean, wearing less clothes just means less laundry to wash.

While the story itself is a bit bare bones, the first volume did make me interested enough to see where it goes.

Yamada-kun and the 7 witches. Chapter 243.

Best girl wins. Happy ending.

An enjoyable read, the characters were a lovable bunch and the comedy never failed to raise a smile.
However- besides the occasional “omg this completely new character might know another secret” surprise, the last 100 chapters or so were meandering like crazy. Seemed that with every new detail revealed about the school’s past the mystery just became more and more incomprehensible, I’d completely lost track of who lost whose memories when, why and how.

An average supernatural mystery story, but a pleasant enough love-comedy, for 90 chapters.

Fuuka. The recent introduction of Sakura has been absolutely hilarious. I love it.

The “drawn to you” line appearing on both the page and screen so closely, that’s some masterful manipulation right there.

========

You might call this cheating -as this involves no reading- but I have been watching the readings of Berserk by the Mangastorian youtube channel lately.

You might recall a manga I mentioned I was reading earlier called Futago no Teikoku. Well, from what I've found out from the translator's Twitter, he's quitting the Futago No Teikoku translation, since he's gotten an actual paid job as an official translator (for a company that publishes hentai manga, go figure). So that puts me back on square one. Any advice?

Noragami missed publishing a chapter last month, and it has now been announced that it has been put on hiatus for a while while the author, Adachitoka, recovers from illness.

http://fast-moon.tumblr.com/post/160116889427/noragami-on-indefinite-hiatus

The illness is not specified; but recent drops in counts of pages per chapter and a two-month hiatus last year hint at simple stress and overwork.

Wombs

On the planet of Hekiou, there is a continuing war between the first wave of immigrants and the second. An important section of the military uses a native creature, the Niebass, to give its soldiers translocation abilities. These soldiers are all women, with the alien creature transplanted into their wombs. Some people see this practice as a violation of human women by aliens, and Mana Oga's boyfriend has a similar perspective on the matter. Mana Oga is a new soldier in this section, and the story follows her and the other women in her group who accept the alien creatures into their wombs in order to defend their homes.

A Silent Voice

My copies of the books arrived this week. The manga is proving easier to follow than the film was (much though I enjoyed it - see my comments in the film thread); I think I'll enjoy the film more on a repeat viewing as a result.

Would you do a quick compare of the two after you finished the manga? I read the latter, I didn't like some aspect of it (especially the underwhelming ending) and I'm a bit hesitant at the moment to spend €14 for a movie ticket to see it.
