Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm on episode 9. Asuka's line delivery is significantly less obnoxious in this dub than in the previous dub and, according to my extremely limited ability to understand foreign vocal intonation, the original Japanese audio. This makes Kensuke and Tojis' complaints about her come off as unnecessary,...

This is my biggest problem, and I'm surprised the Kaworu stuff is getting more attention.

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

I have a friend who goes on Something Awful, and he shared with me a post that explains why the translation is so literal.

I intuit that maybe the reason the old dub wasn't included on Netflix is that it didn't adhere to Khara's new translation.

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

The new Rei voice is really something. I'm used to Rei being emotionless, but I saw an official quote (maybe it was from Anno? This was years ago) that said something like Rei isn't emotionless, but she doesn't recognize that she has emotions. That's the exact feeling I'm getting from this performan...

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

I notice they changed Toji saying "You know you're a real pain in the ass, don't ya?" to "You know you're a real slave to your passions, don't ya?" Is this version of the line more accurate? I do notice it has a double meaning, intentionally or otherwise. Yes, Kensuke is a slave ...

Even if that were true, I think is the only release of NGE we're getting in the West for the foreseeable future.

Putting no effort to replace it with something interesting is the sacrilege to me. Even just using a different song from the soundtrack in every episode would've been something.

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

Asuka's voice makes me uncomfortable. The performance is very good, so I wouldn't say I disagree with it as a casting decision, but she sounds so young that instead of being able to project myself onto her, I'm forced to look at her the way I would look at a child, which changes the way I enjoy the ...

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm frankly flabbergasted that the response is so negative. This dub absolutely obliterates the old ADV dub, especially in the VAs for Shinji and Asuka, who actually sound like real characters, and not just cardboard exaggerations. There's so much more nuance in the new dub, characters have room to...

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm glad that Shinji and Misato have VAs whose performances, from the very first episode, are wonderful. Both had great VAs in the original dub, but it took them awhile to get into character, and I wanted a dub that was good from the very beginning. I am very satisfied, but I do have one complaint. ...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

So, we're officially only a month away from the premiere date and as far as I can tell, there hasn't been any additional press releases or new information about the status of the release or the new dub. Kinda thought that they would have released something in the past couple months since they annou...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

Good, good. I'm eager to hear the new cast in action. I know how strongly Grant feels about Asuka but unless Funimation royally screws the pooch, she'll have a big movie coming her way next year or year after and maybe more depending on what Shin Evangelion is. She and the others will be fine sitti...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

I was hoping they'd keep Spike. Under proper direction, he's the perfect Shinji. And Tiffany was great even before the movies, so.. yeah, I'm disappointed. And yeah, the trailers have been pretty generic and seem bad from a fan's perspective, mostly because it markets the show as an action-mecha ser...

Wait, I thought the "OA" versions were the versions that originally aired, and they were supplanted by the director's cut later on.

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

This is a misunderstanding that I'm still disappointed to see. Studio khara didn't make Funimation do anything. Funimation went to khara for help after they had a dub approved and put into theaters. Huh. What made them decide to redub it, then? ADV released the English version mere months after the...

It's unlikely he would've been in it. He was only in the Director's Cut episodes, and I don't even know how many lines he had.

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

Spring is next month, which means that unless the target date has been moved, NGE should be on Netflix within four months, at the latest. If they were redubbing it, we probably would've heard something more definitive than a tweet from someone who worked on the original dub.

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

I just read the Polygon article, and I wouldn't necessarily say that Netflix will do a worse job marketing Eva than Funimation. I saw Big Mouth ads before every other YouTube video for quite some time, and I could easily see Netflix running ads for NGE before videos. It seems reasonable that they wo...
