Re: MariShin discussion general

Let's all calm down a bit here. Invocations of Hitler and genuinely fascist plot points like in AoT are completely out of proportion to the topic discussed and neither called for, nor helpful to the debate.

No. Girlfriend of Steel would feel at home during the action episodes, but it was very much made after the fact

Re: NTE's interpretation of the characters

Dito. It came up elsewhere the other day, and the more you think about it, the less sense it makes. Ah yes, Asuka has to wear her old plug suit for this mission because clearly, Shinji would not recognize her otherwise. Because that makes sense.

Re: MariShin discussion general

I agree with Chris, that's an incredibly cynical and reductive take; also patently wrong, given the attention that Shin gives to Kensuke and Asuka just normally living together without any implication of romantic involvement.
Also the entirety of Mari's character

Re: games like evangelion

I've actually played something recently that does fit the bill: Heaven Will Be Mine . It's a visual novel that covers a lot of similar ground as the more esoteric half of NGE specifically; mechs being extensions of the self, mild existential shenanigans and the sex-laden violence that 01 likes to in...

Re: Can an Evangelion have the soul of the pilot's father?

It's only mothers; I'm a bit rusty on the precise dialogue, so I don't recall off the top of my head if it was stated outright or was written between the lines, but only the souls of the mothers are compatible.

Re: Feedback Thread (GENERAL)

Newbies are the lifeblood of any community, and yes they will show up and make some pretty silly questions, but everyone was a newbie once and I believe we have to be welcoming towards them if we want the community to be healthy. That's kind of the crux of the matter tho - as you yourself point out...

Re: Feedback Thread (GENERAL)

I do see your point. I am under no illusion that the theorycrafting side of EGF as it was in the days between Q and Shin is anything other than dead - many of the driving forces behind it who have left have, publicly or in private, said in no unclear terms that they have no intention to return. So I...

Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

It's not high art by any sensible metric, but I am also in camp it being a lot better than its reputation would have you believe; although my personal recommendation is to stop at episode 15 and then read the manga instead; it takes the handful of salvageable plot beats from later in the show and ro...

Frontier is a bit rough around the edges in some places, but yeah, on the whole it's a pretty good watch.

Re: Early 2000s Gainax is Proto Trigger

The connection runs a lot deeper than merely a common style; the bulk of the talent that would later go on to found Trigger did indeed work at Gainax in that time, before quitting or being fired in the wake of the same sketchy decisions that would eventually bring Gainax to its knees wholesale. Your...

Re: Feedback Thread (GENERAL)

Yes, but aren't those naturally posters that would reach out to you? Having an issue with posters is kind of a one-way-street solution. But if a user is being driven away by mod hostility, I'd imagine they would just silently dip out or write the community off; too much trouble. There would be fear...

I will admit that my final response in that thread was not in good form; however I also assure you that this is not merely some empty strawman, that is a sentiment that has been expressed to me in no uncertain terms by several people who used to be driving forces behind debate here, but have since l...

Re: Currently Playing 5: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder!

Played Heaven Will Be Mine after seeing it recommended by a mutual; it's a bit obtuse at the start, with extremely rapid-fire introduction to lore and concepts even by the standards that those here are used to, but quite fun once you settle into the rhythm of things; the cast is small, only a three ...

Re: I believe Mari is another (guardian) angel figure in Eva

In terms of how the story actually treats Mari rather than her in-universe characteristics, the most glaring example would have to be how she leads Shinji off into a happy life in the end, despite having almost no interactions with him. There were many characters who could have done this and who ha...

Which is adjacent to the point I am making; being flawless (or some approximation thereof) is not the cause, it's a symptom. It's one way in which the condition that is a Mary Sue can manifest. (for the record, I don't think that Rey is one - badly written yes, but not in a way that constitutes Sue-...
