Also the lack of the sense of completion has REALLY put me off No more angels, no more Evas, no more NERV or people or relationships or interactions, an apocalypse melted everyone into goo and wrought unparalleled destruction upon the face of the Earth, the enemies are all vanquished and the heroes...

Perhaps that came off a bit too harsh. My apologies. I was trying to say it may be a little to early to state that you didn't enjoy the show... It's a taxing show, intellectually, but I think it requires a bit of study to really form an opinion on the show. It's complexity is certainly a...

I get the impression that we have on our hands someone who's been spoiled by the shallow, formulaic aspects of Hollywood, and for that matter, conventional anime storylines. And with all due respect, alih92, please grow up. Evangelion is complex subject matter. I am sure that there are plenty of...

Like I said in my previous post, people need to stop being in denial. I agree with you, but the debate of whether it was "actually" rape is going to go on fruitlessly because its a touchy issue. That being said, we shouldn't shy away from discussing this kind of subject, either. It...

while wer're at it: as much as I love Godard I can't stand his Marxism. Really? Say what you want about his Marxism, it really does fit in well with the times, and I think that really gave him an outlet of discussion with not only the rest of the avant-garde community at the time, but also ...

In Gainax, giant robots and space-faring battleships and chicks with big tits are more important than dusty old pompous French art-film auteur. Well I suppose Gainax doesn't wouldn't appericiate the Marxist aesthetics of Godard. It would go against their cash-cow "fan-service makes us ...

Really? Must have missed that... :sweatdrop: Though I find it kind of odd that a filmmaker hasn't actually seen any Godard. He's a considerably influential auteur... He never came up in whatever literature/film electives that I'm assuming an animator has to take in college? No one brough...

This thread, for example : http://forum.evageeks.org/viewtopic.php?t=7776 Fair enough, I'm still working through the debate right now but the point itself seems valid. I may have to give that scene a re-watch though. It's been some time now, and I'm not sure I'm quite so ready to ac...

I was under the impression that Yui's final words stated that anyone could come back if they wished to. Misinterpreted perhaps?

Not knowing about the budgetary restrictions regarding the final two episodes, I intially took the EoTV as a tribute to the French New Wave films of the lates sixties and early seventies, especially referencing Jean-Luc Godard. Stylisitcally, It's got many of the same features of a Godard film, ...

If I'm not mistaken, Complementation and Instrumentality are essentially the same thing. Though it seems that GEHIRN/NERV itself really never called it "complementation", while it seems that SEELE used the terms synonomously. If I'm not mistaken, In episode 2 Gendo gets a folder of...

thought Ran was good, but not great. I would have to watch it again though since I have not seen it since 07 or 08 though. I remember liking it, but was not amazed as most people where. Ran is a film that polarizes people it seems. The English/Lit teachers in my school all regard it as one of the b...

regarding the End of Evangelion, the message is obfuscated by the apocalyptic proceedings, but is nonetheless present and indeed concrete; Don't kill yourself. I'm inclined to agree, considering that Anno quote, but I think it would be an oversimplification if one was to say that was the ma...

Essentially, the message is that Hideaki Anno read the Bible, a little Sigmund Freud, and wanted to incorporate them into a mecha anime. Then he got depressed and decided to screw over royally all the characters who were begining to develop caring and loving bonds with each other, thus pissing off t...

Judging by the fact that wars and environmental disasters occured right around 2I, which is basically when all of the students in question were born, it's pretty concievable that many children are growing up with a deceased parent or close relative. Such is probably the norm of a post 2I society...

I found a few of Anno's montage sequences throughout the series to be rather annoying. I appreciate what he was trying to do, but I get the feeling he was trying to imitate Godard and some of the Japanese New Wave Abstractionists a bit too directly. I had no problem with the ones in EoE, however...

Anyway, I watched Hiroshi Teshigahara's Woman in the Dunes and I was stunned. One of the best films I've ever seen Such an excellent film. Gotta love the creative output from the Japanese New Wave. If you're in the mood for another good piece, I'd suggest Masashiro Shinoda's Lov...
