Tsukimonogatari was great as expected. Really funny Araragi-Tsukihi stuff, and the Yotsugi Service was out of control. The OP was a return to form too.

Glad you brought that to attention, I'm really interested in the Genpei War and sometimes forget the connections it had with those warlords.

Like how Shingen is also known as Minamoto no Harunobu in documents at the Imperial Court in Kyoto, and thus would have a direct claim to the shogunate since the Minamoto clan founded the first shogunate. That's a detail I hadn't considered. An important one too, considering his shadow is o...

Finished Exile and the Kingdom on the way back from my grandparent's yesterday, the last of Camus' fiction I had left to read. His short stories are not as good as his novels, but they're good primers for themes he handles in greater detail in his longer works. Loneliness is a problem in...

You should definitely rewatch it but I think the only historical knowledge that helps is a little background on Shingen, Nobunaga and Tokugawa. I particularly liked the portrayal of Nobunaga here.

Kaguya-hime was beautiful. It added a few big dynamics and a lot of detail not found in the original monogatari that went a LONG way towards making it a more emphatically affective story, which isn't to say the original wasn't but that it was over a thousand years old. That there would be ro...

I rewatched Kagemusha last night. Despite the nearly 3 hour runtime the protagonist does not have much of a presence throughout, but he makes a few bold moves that, by the ending, made me appreciate his character arc quite a lot.

Oh, and the battle scenes look really expensive. Great stuff.

Got some good stuff this year: a hardcover set of Shelby Foote's The Civil War, The Treasury of the True Dharma Eye, and two artbooks: one collection of Hiroshige's woodblock prints of scenes in Edo and one of the paintings of Odilon Redon. Will post pics when I'm back home.

Spring and Chaos is a beautiful film. The montages in particular made quite an impression on me when I first watched it, easily throwing it into the top 5 or so anime films I've ever seen. It easily cements Kawamori's status as a remarkable, talented, and artful director (assuming DYRL ...

I had to get used to the kitties but Spring and Chaos was beautiful. What an affective way of telling Kenji Miyazawa's story and goals. I will finish reading his stories in translation soon.

BTW Doggie, it's currently summertime in my part of the world, a la Southern Hemisphere. Whoops. Giant Robo was very good. It felt kind of all over the place, though; the way old characters were brought back and new ones were phased in was kind of jarring. The whole thing felt a touch un...

Oh look, am I currently listening to Walking Through the Empty Age on repeat? Why yes, maybe I am. That grorious Engrish. The song is inextricably linked with the scene it accompanies, every time I try to listen to it on its own I end up watching the last scene. I suggested it may be ill-fitting to...
